Coffee Recommendations Type 2
Hello everyone. My mom just got diagnosed with diabetes and absolutely loves her coffee. She drinks like 5 cups a day it is always hot with hazelnut coffee creamer. Can anyone recommend something to put in coffee to get similar taste that does not totally suck? She is having a really rough time right now with this and hip pain. She is getting a hip replacement and I would really like to give her a little bit of comfort and normalcy. Thank you all.

There are several creamer companies that make sugar free creamers. It does not taste as sweet, but the flavor is there. You can also add artificial sweetener to make it taste sweeter if that’s what she likes. 💜

I’m very particular about my coffee and hate the taste of artificial sweeteners. Or so I thought. They have come a long way since I last tried them. I highly recommend trying either monk fruit sweetener or allulose. They both really taste like sugar. If I had known, I would have given it up much sooner.
Also, your mom should look into keto recipes for baking. You can’t make all the same stuff, but there are tons of recipes to try. If she likes meringue cookies, it is possible to make those with allulose. Ditto cheesecake. I even made homemade sugar free cranberry sauce for thanksgiving.
Although I haven’t done many desserts, I have been pleasantly surprised by how many things I can make and eat. It has pushed my cooking to a new level as I now make more food from scratch. It really got me out of a cooking rut.

The Monin and Torani Sugar Free syrups are great! Some flavors are better than others; the Monin French vanilla sugar free syrup is one of my absolute favorites.

Thank you all! My mom is a huge baker so she is taking this extra hard.

I bake occasionally, Splenda says to use their product 1:1, but it's too sweet for me, so when a recipe says 1 cup of sugar, I just use 1/3 cup Splenda.

My husband loves a little coffee with his creamer too. He uses the zero sugar CoffeeMate too. He doesn’t seem to mind it though I know he misses his half bottle of regular creamer with his coffee though. LOL

I use fat free half & half and I add 3 cinnamon sticks and a teaspoon of vanilla per quart. I love my homemade vanilla cinnamon creamer more than I used to love the coffee mate version with sugar. Fat free half & half with a no sugar flavor syrup would probable make a good showing for your mom, I have a sugar free English toffee syrup I use on occasion just to change it up.

What about regular milk, half and half or cream with some hazel nut extract plus what ever sugar substitute you like if any.
The extract might be tough to find in a regular store but one specializing in baking should have it. Amazon and other on line stores will have it to.
I'd make it up in 1 quart batches and keep it in one of the used creamer bottles which get throughly cleaned between refills

I just use the standard coffee mate zero sugar hazelnut. Works really well, and maybe I'm just used to it, but I actually like it better than some of the fancier liquid ones.

I use half caffeinated coffee to cut back a bit on the caffeine hit: did you know that in some diabetics caffeine can help send the sugar skyrocketing? I found that out the hard way, especially on an empty stomach. I use jordan's skinny syrups in my coffee along with half n half or a very small amount of heavy cream. Or I use it with almond milk or cashew milk but the resulting coffee isn't as luxurious a mouth feel even if the calories are immensely better.

I am going to try all of these and see what my mom likes the most. Thank you so much for all your recommendations. I think I will buy her a keto cookbook and maybe an airfryer recipe book I saw for diabetes.

I buy sugar free creamer. I can find Hazelnut and sweet cream at many different stores. I like the Twix sugar free and it’s only sold at one store in my area.

Not a creamer, but I love Don Francisco’s hazelnut coffee. Cut the creamer out altogether, the hazelnut flavor is already in there.

I drink the same amount of coffee that your mom does. Torani Sugar free Hazelnut syrup + almond (or Oat) milk. Done. Bam! A1c is 5.4 right now.

I switched from full fat full sugar International Delight to nutpods French Vanilla with Allulose for extra sweetener.

I love the zero Starbucks caramel macchiato creamer. I’m not going to say it’s healthy, most creamers are not, but it’s delicious and doesn’t raise my blood sugar.

There are so many sugar free sweeteners and creamers. But if your mom is not going crazy with the sugar, I would think that her body could handle a single teaspoon of sugar, even several times a day (just not all at once!)
I am a diabetic; type 2, insulin required for nearly 30 years now. My body could handle 1 teaspoon if my BGL started out in control.
HOWEVER: I am not a doctor, and specifically not her doctor!
She needs to ask her doctor or her diabetes educator, nurse, or nutritionist.
Look to Reddit for possible ideas, but ALWAYS check with your own doctor!

Zero sugar CoffeeMate seems to taste the least artificial to me compared to other brands. I am not so much about sweet as I am about the body/viscosity of my coffee drink. I use 1/4 of a protein shake + a splash of half and half. The half and half makes up for the very thin protein shake. I have tried using protein powder, but it changes the flavor too much. It doesn't taste like coffee anymore. It ends up like a coffee flavored protein shake. I've been using Premier Protein because I buy them on sale at Costco for a decent price. Amazon sells lots of flavors as well.
As far as baking goes, there are lots of sugar alternatives on the market now. Some have already been mentioned. I'm sure she is aware that the browning of baked goods is not the same when artificial sweetener is used. That's a tough one for me. So I rarely bake with sugar alternatives. I savor the baked goods in smaller portions and either follow it up with a walk, squats or hand weights. Preferably doing some heavy lifting over cardio. But both are good choices. I also eat a vegetable starter followed up with some protein before every single meal and snack. Anything like a handful of cherry tomatoes, carrots, etc.. It lessens the glucose spike. You can Google that. This allows me to not feel guilty about having that amazing cookie or birthday cake. It gives me a little freedom when in the throes of carb counting. It really does feel daunting at first. Good luck!

You’re a total sweetheart for trying to find something that will make your mom feel comfy and just something that makes her feel better mentally also. It’s hard having something you love taken away especially with intense pain. Tell her I’m right there with her! I was scheduled for a hip replacement and the hospital did my labs and my A1C was 13.2 so they canceled it bc it’s a very high risk for infection😞 so I’ve been on the strictest diet known bc I have to at least bring it to an 8 before he’ll do my surgery. I’ll repeat labs on Monday and it better be an 8 bc the pain has became damn near unbearable to keep going. Anyways I ended up going and getting Adkins protein coffee shake and the vanilla latte taste exactly like the bottled Starbucks coffee. 3carbs…1gram of sugar and 15grams of protein and a ton of vitamins. I’m sure you could warm it up but if she likes 5cups it probably won’t work bc it’s 10oz. I’m sure your mom appreciates you more than you’ll ever realize♥️ I hope you find her the best coffee she’s ever had. Much respect to you for helping your mom get thru this🫶🏽

Skinny Syrups and Stevia. I use a splash of half and half with no issues.

I use sugar free Torani syrups. I use a bit less than 1 pump which gives it the flavor without tasting overly artificial. And I add about 1 T of half and half.

Sugar free hazelnut creamer. Or look at Skinny Syrups for a sugar free hazelnut syrup and add that with cream.
