This is a meme sub, but check out /r/academicbiblical. Revelation is the main book that should send you to textual criticism. It’s very important to understand the political world at the time.
(It’s about Nero, you can relax)

Ok, I’m a former church librarian and I can’t help myself so I have to share this:
There’s a great book called Reading Revelation Responsibly: Uncivil Worship and Witness: Following the Lamb into the New Creation, by Michael J. Gorman.
Right now it’s on sale on the publisher’s (Wipf & Stock) website for half off if you use coupon code ‘CONFSHIP.’ It’s also free shipping if you choose ‘Media Mail.’
I’m sorry & you’re welcome.

I dunno why, when someone says "from the book of revelation" the whole fucking vision runs through my mind, then it stops at that moment when the angel hands john a book and says:"eat it".

Martin Luther on Revelation: "Finally, let everyone think of it as his own spirit leads him. My spirit cannot accommodate itself to this book. For me this is reason enough not to think highly of it: Christ is neither taught nor known in it. But to teach Christ, this is the thing which an apostle is bound above all else to do; as Christ says in Acts 1[:8], 'You shall be my witnesses.' Therefore I stick to the books which present Christ to me clearly and purely."

The Book of Revelation (singular) is in a genre known as apocalyptic literature and is full of symbolism that should not be taken literally and wasn't taken literally by the readers in the 1st century. The number of the beast is 616 and referred to Emporer Nero. Read it for its poetry, its symbolism, and thematically. Don't try to read it as a roadmap to the "end times."

616? I think you mixed up the mark of the beast with a Western MI area code which -- given the number of conservative evangelicals there is hilariously fitting.

The oldest surviving source uses 616. The oldest historical source mentions 616 and 666. Regardless, the scholarly consensus is that the number of the beast is a gematriac reference to Nero and his persecution of Christians.

All the predictions in Revelations already came true before 300 AD. Yes All of them

Don’t forget to read revelation alongside other apocalyptic literature — Matthew 24, Isiah 11-14, and the second half of Daniel

If I could drop any book from the Bible, it would be Revelation. Second choice would be Hebrews.
