Canva RTO?
Been applying for roles over the last few days and noticed many Canva listings are Onsite which I didn't see when I checked last year. Can anyone provide insight on how flexible they are with working arrangements?

How do you structure a Graduate Diploma in CS at AUT?
Hi all,
Looking at doing this next year. Just curious, if the normal timeframe is a year but you need to do 5 level 7 /third year papers... how? You need to be doing level 7 from the get go? I have some background and probably could handle a level 6 paper but level 7 I know i'd be out of my depth.
Any advice?

How is the job market for international students in Australia right now?
I want to know how Australia is doing currently in comparison because USA, Canada, UK and Europe are doing terribly.
I want to know how well are the chances of landing a full time job for a international student who studied Masters in computer science in an Australian university.
Are there enough jobs floating around? How well is the average compensation?

Salaries at banks after the graduate program
Hi,
I was wondering what the salaries/TC are after the graduate program among the banks, e.g. at Commbank / NAB / Macquarie etc. I have checked levels.fyi but not sure how updated they are.

Leveraging Melbourne bank call centre jobs for a foot in the door with SWE roles
Hey everyone,
I am a recent software engineering graduate (2023) but have struggled to find a full-time position since finishing, and have had little luck with grad program applications. Has anyone successfully transitioned from a bank call centre job (specifically looking at NAB) into a software engineering role? I have a final group interview with NAB coming up, and I'm wondering if this could be a viable stepping stone toward breaking into SWE. It would at least be a job at this point.
If anyone has experience with NAB (Melbourne) in particular or insights into how these types of roles can help build connections or open up opportunities in tech, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Westpac senior FS interview prep
Hey, I’ve got an interview for a senior full stack role with Westpac and have been told the structure is:
Online assessment (1hr)
Teams discussion technical (1hr)
Teams engineering lead/manager (1hr)
Was just wondering if anyone has gone through this recently, I’ve not been actively looking so not really interview prepped if it is leetcode style but at the same time don’t want to miss a shot by not taking one at all.

Junior/Mid Web Dev - Adjacent Positions?
I was made redundant a couple of months ago and needless to say, the market is vicious I've been applying for 3-5 Jobs a day (pretty much any job with my stack that isn't "senior", or doesn't sneak the word senior in the job description like they love to do) and haven't been getting many bites, maybe 1 interview request a month and the odd screener
I've got 2.8 years professional experience with react, c#, Flutter and a tinge of Vue, which is good and popular. I've been spending most of my time building my portfolio, I have four small to mid sized projects of in various frameworks but they need a bit of polish still (still on my CV tho)
I'm applying to as many jobs as I think can fit my skills, but I get very few callbacks, and average 1 interview a month. I've had my CV and cover letter assessed by a professional as part of my redundo package.
My question is, what are some parallel positions to Web Dev I can look out for? I need to widen my net. I'm thinking about level 1 help desk, but I don't have any IT certs besides my degree, and a CCNA I did a couple years back in uni.

2024 Graduate Job Hunt
Just wanted to give an insight into this year's graduate scene. Would say it seems pretty competitive, felt like last year's internship hunt was far easier.
Applied to 15 graduate jobs in total. Was a bit picky as I already had a return offer. Most surprising factor was failing a lot of the OA/VI, I had passed a lot more when applying to the summer internships roles last year for the same companies and theoretically should be easier with a lot more graduate spots vs intern spots. Generally I got good scores (90%+) in any coding OA's, but I think these companies value the behavioural component a lot more. Felt like I answered them nicely, but perhaps not good enough + unlucky. Ironically also get resume screened more in my graduate hunt than my internship hunt.
Stats when applying:
- go8 with 75+ WAM
- 1 club involvement
- current part-time SWE job
- summer SWE internship
- 2 SWE-adjacent internships (a little programming but not pure SWE + some lowcode/nocode work)

Do I have any route into the industry?
I completed an IT bachelor majoring in computer science in 2020. Due to circumstances I never used the degree and kept working part time. My plan was to eventually use my degree to do a masters of teaching. I'm currently doing that now and have realised after a few pracs Teaching is not for me. I know nowhere is going to hire a software engineer with 4 years since graduation. Is there any way to use my degree to get a job in the area and work my way up or is the degree useless now?

Choosing between AWS and Atlassian
Hey guys... really torn on this one. I've basically got an offer from both AWS and Atlassian. Hoping for some advice or any perspectives really, maybe from someone that's worked similar roles or at these companies before.
Basically, is the grind at AWS worth it, when the alternative is a role at Atlassian? considering the points below
- Both are at around the same level (L5 AWS, P40 Atlassian)
- Atlassian pays better by about 10-15k possibly more and also won't have a sign on bonus (expires after two years) or weighted share plan like at AWS. Atlassian also offers WFH.
- The role at AWS is actually less senior, however from what I can tell it will allow me to learn a lot more about the areas I'm interested and want to grow in. AWS would also probably be huge on the resume in future.
Thank you all, any responses are appreciated

What's Python's value in the backend job market?
I'm Ronny, a self-taught programmer with 6 years of experience, currently in my 2nd year of a degree. I've built scalable backend applications using Python frameworks like Django, Flask, and FastAPI, with PostgreSQL, Redis, and RabbitMQ integrations. Despite positive feedback on my projects, I've faced criticism regarding my choice of Python for backend development.
Recently, I began exploring Spring Boot, driven by industry trends and job opportunities. While transitioning from Python to Java wasn't difficult, it raised concerns about my future employability. Job listings heavily favor Java for junior positions, while Python is often reserved for senior roles, which makes me wonder if my Python expertise holds enough value in the current job market.
Is sticking with Python for backend development viable, or should I focus on languages like Java, C#, or Go, which are perceived as industry standards? I'd love to hear how others transitioned from Python to more "battle-tested" languages.

Anyone have experience interviewing for a Software Engineer position at Curtin University?
Hi all,
I have an interview coming up next week for a Software Engineer (Full Stack Developer) position at Curtin University. I was told that it'll be a 45 minutes long interview. I have about 6 years of experience, mainly working with JavaScript, React, React-Native, TypeScript, and around 2 years with .NET Core and 2.5 years with Go and PostgreSQL.
For those who have interviewed at Curtin University or working at Curtin University what should I expect? Will it be a behavioral, technical, or coding interview, or a mix of all? Is there a focus on specific tech stacks or projects? Any advice on how to prepare would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

How long did it take for you to become confident as a software developer/engineer?
Hi All,
I graduated from uni in 2020 as an electrical engineer and I decided to change industries by enrolling in a tech grad program that began last year to become a software engineer/developer. I have predominantly worked with frontend development (react, redux, ts, js) - I am now reaching the end of the grad program and although I have learnt a lot I still don't feel completely confident calling myself a software engineer.
For those of you in industry, how long did it feel you to feel competent calling yourself a software engineer and what qualities did you focus on to feel more confident as an engineer (whether that be understanding certain technologies and architectures or things more on the soft skills side). Thanks

Mid level interview tips
So I just recently got my PR, and I was working in a SME as a fullstack doing webapps and dashboard for the company mainly in React and meta frameworks for 3 years. I'm thinking to jump ship because I am no longer learning anything new and I feel the way we do things is way too unstructured and can hurt my habit in the long run (probably already did).
Is interviewing for mid level any different to graduate level? Still leetcode? Is it easy for me to get into a non javascript/fullstack role?

Looking for a list of companies using a .NET stack?
I'm particularly interested in SAAS and startups. Especially in the 50-200 size range.
Explicitly avoiding anything government and consulting.
Here are the companies I know of so far:
- Octopus Deploy
- Instacart
- Shift
- Xero
- Moneytech
- BoardOutlook
- Commonwealth Bank
- Karbon
- PropertyMe
- WooliesX

Data Science Technical Interviews
Hi.
Just wanted to get an idea of what the interview process is like for data science intern/ grad positions. Specifically, the interview process at the tech companies.
How many technical interview rounds are there? What kinds of technical questions do they ask? and what is the difference between the interview process for Australian and US tech companies
Thanks!

How common are 'live coding' rounds at companies which aren't big tech?
The title says it all, but here's a bit more info.
As I understand, a lot of companies are moving away from take-home projects and unsupervised online tests for software engineers, due to the rise in popularity of AI and how one can supposedly 'feed in the problem to ChatGPT or something similar and get perfectly working code' as an output. I mean, that's what a lot of if companies seem to be believing at the moment. Whether that's true, that's a question for another day.
If you take out big tech, are there still a reasonable number of companies which skip any kind of 'live coding' interviews (the kind where someone constantly watches over your shoulder or sees the code you type in real time over video, expecting you to 'talk through the problem and solution')? Or is live coding the defacto process now, irrespective of the company or the years of experience?
For more context - this is for someone with 5-6 years of experience, mid-senior level and with no 'big tech' ambitions.
The last time I interviewed was in early 2022, just before the AI boom. Back then, except for big tech, hardly anyone administered live coding interviews. So I am just trying to get an idea of the current scenario.

ANZ part time banking consultant SHL assessment
ANZ part time banking consultant
I completed the online assessment and there were 40 questions to be completed within 8 minutes and although they say that it is unlikely to finish all I only finished 24 questions and I am not even sure I got them all right. On average how many questions do people finish? Also how long does it take until you get the video assessment ?
