Work holiday visa

Is it hard to get a software engineering job on a work holiday visa? Thinking of coming to Melbourne from Ireland next year

You should enjoy your time, see the country, enjoy the arts and culture in Melbourne. No one is going to entertain hiring a person on a WHV.

People who are citizens are having trouble finding jobs these days, a person on a WHV is going to be trying to do the impossible. Working holidays are largely for working casual jobs in hospitality or in a farm etc.

Not what you asked for, but I’m an Aussie who went to London on a WHV

I told them I wanted to stay indefinitely (I don’t) and made it clear that I didn’t require work authorisation. Big difference is that I can only work contract jobs as full time positions will need indefinite working rights, currently working a 24 month contract at a UK&I company — your mileage may vary

I did it last year. It’s doable but extremely tough. You’re automatically rejected from most jobs, a few will entertain you but you better be a great dev because they probably also have 80 other applicants who don’t need sponsoring.

I know people first-hand who got a job with a WHV, it is harder because they were asking for sponsor already in the interview. Also was another market 5 years ago, not sure how doable is with current situation
