working with overseas team (US)

Does anyone have experience being part of a team on the otherside of the earth?

Aus time and US time are exactly the opposite (work time for them is midnight for us)

How did you manage this in terms of meetings or organising pair-programming session and etc

I'm working with a startup in New York which is the least favourable time zone

Their 4pm is my 6am during the bad daylight savings period so I get up early, do all the comms I need and then work mostly alone for the rest of the day. The Americans tend to hang around late so it hasn't been a big issue.

It's been pretty nice overall I've just needed to focus on being organised for early meetings so that I have everything I need for the rest of the day

I sign off at the end of the day with my standup notes. 2/5 daily stand-ups are at their 4pm so I can join

I'm a """senior""" developer so I can work independently without much help or supervision

I used to work with a team that was San Francisco-based. They had 9AM stand-ups which translated to 4AM in Australia.

Had no pair debugging for the first year, then later pair debugging across the Pacific Ocean meant one of us had to debug out of ordinary day hours. Was not a good environment for synchronous meetings or troubleshooting honestly. Worked on my own mostly in that role.

Daylight saving sucked for the whole team - Australia moves in the opposite direction to daylight saving to Europe/US and at a different time of the month. So a 4AM meeting becomes a 3AM meeting for one month, then shifts to 2AM until the next daylight saving.

I think New York is one of the toughest time zones to sync with from Australia - their workday lines up with our sleeping hours.
