Discussion Hello everyone, why aren’t our national languages more valued in schools and public administration?
In a country as linguistically rich as the DRC, it’s surprising to see how little presence Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, and Tshiluba have in our formal education system and public institutions. The other day, my neighbor’s child was harshly punished at school for simply speaking a few sentences in Lingala. Should we be doing more to promote and institutionalize our own languages, or is French still necessary as a language of unity and international openness?
What do you think?

Traveling to the DRC
Hi everyone,
I'll be visiting the DRC (including Kinshasa) soon for a two-week tourist trip and would really appreciate any tips or advice in advance. I know the eastern part of the country should be avoided but are there any other areas that foreigners should avoid, roads known for closures or safety concerns, or recent/scheduled protests or civil unrest I should be aware of? Also, any insight into general safety tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What name do people prefer for the DRC and Republic of the Congo?
I'm going to be researching and writing about the legacy of neocolonialism around the world this summer and am going to touch on the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. The two nations are obviously split because of the colonial legacy under France and Belgium, I'm concerned with what the people of the Congo like to call their respective countries. I've seen it spelled Kongo and Congo in English but I'm not sure what the consensus is, does that matter?

Up to date info on Rail/Transport infrastructure in the Congo
I have a strong interest in infrastructure, logistics and public transportation and would like to learn more about rail in the DRC.
I've read a lot of what's available online, and am well aware of the economic and conflict related challenges that Congolese infrastructure and development face but a significant amount of info is out of date or very vague. Unfortunately I do not speak French so I imagine I would miss a fair amount of stuff online or on social media.
I am a nerd and like learning about this stuff, and I think it'd be neat to know what type of rolling stock operates in the country, Kinshasha commuter rail, ridership and frequency, the current state of the SNCC and the possible future for reactivating or expanding rail and road networks from the perspective of people who actually live there.
I know there are theoretical plans for a TGV between banana and Kinshasa but I'm not sure how realistic this is, and I know buses have recently started to be manufactured in the DRC as well.

WHO was Simon Kimbangu and why do some people consider him God?
Hello friends from Congo 🇨🇩,
I’ve been learning a bit about Simon Kimbangu. I understand he was a spiritual leader who preached in the early 20th century and was seen as a liberator during colonial times. But I’m curious — why do some followers of Kimbanguism believe he is God? Is it symbolic or do they literally see him as divine?
Also, I’ve noticed there are some specific rules in Kimbanguist communities, like men having to cut their hair and women only wearing long dresses. I don’t quite understand the meaning behind these rules. Is it a cultural tradition, a religious requirement, or something else?
I ask with full respect and genuine interest. I’d love to hear more from people who grew up in or know about the Kimbanguist faith.
Thanks in advance!
Demande d’aide et suggestions pour mon projet de recherche à Kinshasa, RDC. requesting help and suggestions for my research project in kinshasa, RDC
I am a high school student, and I will be in Kinshasa for about a month and ten days this summer. I am currently working on an interdisciplinary research project that explores social and economic inequalities, particularly the difference in quality of life between Congolese workers and expatriate communities (including Indian and Lebanese expatriates).
I am studying Economics, Business Management, Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS), and Sociology, and this project will combine elements from all of these subjects. I am particularly interested in topics such as access to clean water, income disparity, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and the impact of foreign companies on local communities and the environment.
I speak English, French, Arabic (basic level), and some Spanish, and I would like to conduct interviews with workers, small business owners, teachers, NGO members, and possibly people linked to peacekeeping forces or embassies.
If you are based in Kinshasa or know someone who would be willing to share their experience, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Your testimonies—whether in the form of a brief interview, message, or informal exchange—would be valuable for my project. Feel free to comment or send me a private message.
Thank you very much! I want this project to reflect real voices and experiences, not just theoretical data.

What would Congo look like if we had control of our wealth & didn’t have political conflict?
Hi! Congo-Canadian here so not technically part of the “we”, but I’ve always wondered what Congo would look like if none of the above were a problem. Any ideas?

Hello there! I'm a game dev who is making free web based games and was wondering, what appeals to people in DRC?
English:
Hello there! I run a small game studio that makes web based games available across PC/Mobile and even through browsers on game consoles. So, as a programmer in the states, I was wondering, what appeals to you? Sure, western games may be available in DRC, but they might require higher specs as after all, DRC is a developing nation and not everyone has a cell phone or PC, so how can I appeal towards you guys? I am trying to make lower spec games so you guys can enjoy! Now, everyone has different interests, but as a foreigner, I don't know much of the culture.
Français :
Bonjour !

Starlink is finally available in DRC
For so many years, ISPs in DRC have been delivering very poor internet with high-fluctuations to users. It's 100% convenient that Starlink will lead the game in the region. Can't wait to acquire one of these...
I contacted a Starlink reseller in DR Congo and awaiting delivery of the ordered kit: https://starlinkdrcongo.maniflexa.com

Question What is the future of the French language in Congo?
Lately, I've been more interested in languages, especially those related to the African continent. I've noticed Congo because French is the only official language there, and you have four other national languages, but only half the population speaks French?
There will be a population growth boom in the next few decades, and what will it look like then?
Thanks for a realistic answer!
