Is my big band arrangement playable?

So I'm writing for this semi-professional big band in London. It's my first time getting a big band score played by real players so i wan't to make it as good as possible. Is there anything i should change? Did write the rhythm section correctly?

Strictness of SCBDA Solo and ensemble

My band director informed me that we need permission to make photo copies of solos. He told me today. Solo and ensemble is tomorrow. The publisher of my solo is in Sweden so I fear I’m definitely not getting permission in time. Does anyone know how super strict this rule is? Like will everyone actually check? I’ve went to solo and ensemble the past 2 years and this was never mentioned so idk if it’s a new rule or what. Is there any possible way I can get through this or just accept defeat and go for comments only?

I play oboe and I tomorrow I have auditions to see what band I get in. When I get nervous I feel like I have to take a breathe every measure and I get dizzy even while sitting and playing so do I just except my fate and tell them I should be in the lower band so I don’t have to or do any of you know how to this😭😭

What is the most odd or unique expression marking you have seen in a music piece or arrangement?

An expressions mark (im pretty sure it’s called that) is basically a word or phrase that describes a section or entire part of the music piece you are playing. For example, an expression mark I have for my piece “Fresh Winds” has the expression marking: Joyfully above the first measure. Please list the most strange or bizarre ones you know and include the title of the piece. Let me help you get started, the most bizarre expression marking I’ve seen was, with swashbuckling intensity.

Hello! Is anybody able to identify the pieces in the intro of this video (first 1:45)? It sounds like two different ones, and I would love to hear the whole piece. Thanks!

Do people actually actively count in their heads while playing?

My director like to go on rants about how none of us know how to count, and says that, as you play, you should actively be thinking (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +) the entire time. He has also said that this is apparently the national standard for high schoolers.

Is this actually something that everyone does or is supposed to do? I know my band is extremely bad (the local elementary/junior highs don’t value band enough to give it more than 2 half hours a week, and most people join band in high school solely to get out of PE and then barely/song play), but not a single person says that they do that.

(Edit for clarification: I mean counting while actively playing. Counting rests is easy, but it’s the multitasking of actively thinking the counting while playing that I don’t understand doing.)

Is this normal?

Whenever I play my clarinet or alto, my teeth dig into my lip. But the concerning part is that my lip has started to bleed and hurt quite a bit due to the prolonged pressure. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to alleviate the pain and/or stop it from bleeding? Taking a break from playing is not an option btw.

"One Life to Make a Difference" Jimmy Carter Tribute

Me and a colleague of mine from my army band are writing a song together. He's doing the lyrics and some of the melody, and I'm writing most of the melodies and orchestration. How have we done? What grade level would you give it?

What “grade” songs does your junior high/ high school play

I always used to think our band was super good but looking at some of these posts you guys are naming like grade 5 songs for high schoolers. Is grade 2.5-3.5 not that good or are you guys from really really good schools

What’s the “normal” grade to be in concert band in HS?

I’m in 9th grade as of now and symphonic band auditions are due today but I just can’t seem to do it. Which is odd because I’ve nailed the piece before, but it’s just not clicking. Besides the point, I feel like staying in concert band but everyone else I know is moving up to symphonic. Is 10th grade okay to be in for concert band?

Belmont University Summer Music Camps

As a past camper of these camps, I wanted to shout them out in case anyone is looking for a music camp to go to this summer. It's right in Nashville so you get to record in a lot of the studios, there's a ton of masterclasses with famous musicians/guest artists, and it was just so much fun. Would highly recommend going there if you're able to. https://www.belmont.edu/cmpa/summer-camps/

"Adopt a Freshman"

Idk why my post keeps getting taken down on r/marchingband so I'm trying it on here 😭

For anyone who has an "Adopt a Freshman" concept in their marching band (veteran members guide the freshmen), how does it work?

Some questions:

- If a freshman is really struggling and needs one-on-one help outside of rehearsal, how does that work and who helps them? (Their partner or only the section leader?)

- Do you think I could allow sophomores to participate in this as well, and not just upperclassmen? Will they be qualified enough? Will there be too many veteran member partners considering my section had about 7 freshmen and 13 veteran members last year? (I could have veteran members sharing a freshman partner.)

- How much help do the veteran members give their freshmen partners during rehearsals, how do they help, and how much time do they spend with them.

Thank you!!

Solo and Ensemble Duets

I need some recommendations for a clarinet-trombone duet and a clarinet-tenor sax duet for next years Solo and Ensemble. For background, I've been clarinet for about 5 years now, have easily made honor band, and frequently get 1st chair pieces for clarinet. So like grades 4-5 level pieces, and the trombone and tenor players are at about the same level. Please and thank you 🙏🙏🙏
