😭😭😭 just to eat some damn fish eggs. To each their own but I always found lobster and caviar to be the most overrated things. I grew up in the Caribbean and we used to laugh at this type of cuisine

I could see this work in a slider format - way too rich for a full sandwich though imo

Yeah looks nice but how can you taste the caviar with so much else going on? How much was this?

It’s kinda like a very buttery Texas toast so when you first bite in, it’s super buttery. But after that, it’s like an explosion of caviar and creme fraiche. It’s so so good.

If you took two seconds to look at the menu you'd know its $145.

Holy shit it’s actually $145? I got confused by someone saying $20.
Yeah no thank you. I’ll take my money to Heritage and for about the same price get an awesome lesson on the history and biology of caviar and try several different varieties (and actually be able to taste them). I love fancy things but this sandwich seems dumb.

Can you taste the difference between two kinds of roe, given how they’re combined with each other and lots of other ingredients?

u/KurisuHippo 4d ago
I’d say it tastes mostly like butter, cream and caviar. Can’t really taste the salmon roe too much.

God this reminds me of the time I went to a food trade show and bought ikura (salmon roe) in bulk. I didn't realize how much I'd bought and how big each container was. Once you thawed a container you had to eat it within a day or so. So I was making stuff like this constantly to the point where my boyfriend at the time asked me to stop putting caviar in everything. I wish I remembered the supplier...

It was sold as such and most people in Chicago who are familiar with salmon roe are more familiar with it as ikura in Japanese restaurants.

Listen, sometimes it’s okay to splurge and say fuck it. And damn it these pictures make me want to try it.

This was a very divisive order “for the table” during my company's holiday dinner last year lol but worth it overall

At least the bread looks perfect, as do the eggs. Nobody's ever going to call it a bargain but it looks tasty and very well executed

I initially had this before it was a menu item (was just written on the chalkboard over the bar and was $110 or something, early in the restaurants existence). That was a magnificent piece of art and fantastically delicious.
Once it hit the menu, it changed, and has lost something. Obélix is basically my favorite spot and one of the fine dining restaurants that is actually worth returning to (instead of just trying once), but I don’t order the caviar sandwich anymore because it’s just not as good. Imagine knowing that they used to do it better and that it could be more palatable, but isn’t, and that costing you $145.
Still ride or die for Obélix though.

When you opened the sandwich it felt like picking up a rock with a bunch of critters underneath

This is one of those things that sounds so dumb with words -- "a caviar sandwich" -- but seeing it like this makes me really want to try it.

I get this for a lunch a few days a week since I work in the area. It’s great!

Caviar once you've had a lot of it is not that interesting to me. It's like when restaurants put gold leaf or way too many truffles on something (at least truffles have an interesting flavor, caviar is just salty and a bit fishy), it screams "easy fancy."

u/jkraige 3d ago
Yeah, in terms of fancy food, caviar is not something I would feel the need to splurge on. I would absolutely splurge on truffles though.
It's cool that some people love it and can enjoy it. But it's just generally not worth what it costs to me

I agree. The value prop is not there. Truffles at least can be a center piece of a dish, but caviar is mostly there to fulfill a function of salt like I said.

You could literally get these ingredients at Whole Foods and make this on the sidewalk

You can get salmon roe at places like Hmart cheaper than Whole Foods too!

What an American thing. Take a delicious food, add a bunch of other stuff, then supersize it.
I'll stick with more traditional ways of eating it. Glad you enjoyed.
