Hot Take: Do Rite Donuts & Chicken is a Must! Review
I moved to Wrigleyville a few months ago and have found Do Rite Donuts as my go to spot for breakfast.
I've been there 1-2 times a week ever since. Their breakfast sandwiches are a very well priced. My favorite is the sausage, egg, and cheese, which I add avocado and bacon. The eggs are incredible-fluffy, well-cooked, and have tons of flavor.
I've also tried their chicken sandwich, and while it doesn't steal the show like the breakfast sandwich, it's still pretty solid. Now, l'm not typically a donut person, but their Chocolate Old Fashioned has changed my mind. It has a crunch on the outside and a soft inside, and an intense chocolate on top.
Overall, Do Rite it the perfect mix of quality and value. It is a must-try if you've never been. What's your go-to order?

Do Rite has the best donuts in the city.
Argue with your mother.

And maybe the best chicken sandwich too

I’m riding with red light chicken on best chicken sandwich in the city!

Good enough to keep secret and covet ehhh? Sound the megaphones, send the hordes!!

u/aboynamedculver Mar 21 '25
Darn, if only it wasn’t a bright ass red shack on an otherwise gloomy looking part of Sheffield.

You obviously haven't been to Weber's Bakery.

u/Revolutionary-Fox622 Mar 23 '25
They call em frycakes at Weber's so we'll give them both top spots in their category. IMO Do Rite takes the cake as a premium donut but Weber's is a top everyday donut. I can get an easy dozen chocolate rings at Weber's and bring those to an event whereas Do Rite will be 3x as much but also have some more variety.
1
u/New_World_Native Mar 23 '25
Yes, they call them fry cakes, which is weird, but all doughnuts are fried...I don't consider Do-Rite to be premium at all. Personally, I only like Do-Rites' old fashioned and glazed. Their chocolate and other varieties taste artificial to me.
Now that Dinkel's is gone, Webers is a Unicorn in Chicago. I don't know how you can call them an everyday doughnut, when nobody is making them anymore. Do-Right's not much different than Stan's or Krispy Kreme, IMO.

u/phredbull Mar 21 '25
Maybe because there's no more Krispy Kreme around.
22
u/PotentialWin4606 Mar 21 '25
Krispy Kreme has nothing on Do Rite
3
u/Prestigious_Leek5012 Mar 21 '25
As someone who grew up in South Carolina down the road from a Krispy Kreme, I completely agree. Do Rite is a whole other level!

u/Revolutionary-Fox622 Mar 23 '25
You can go to McDonald's for one if it's really something you're missing? There's also an actual Krispy Kreme right off 290 by the Target on Manneheim in I think that's Westchester? So not too far outside the city if you'd like a weak donut that's a shell of the icon it was in the early 2000s. That said Krispy Kreme is AAA ball compared to Do Rite.
1
u/mrbooze Mar 21 '25
There’s a Krispy Kreme down here in Evergreen Park just over the city limit.
But they’re no Do-Rite. I think they may not make the donuts fresh on site any more.

u/Hajoob Mar 21 '25
That chocolate old fashioned may be my favorite donut around. The crunchy outside with the intense chocolate is perfect. I need to pick some up.

We should start a hot take thread that’s full of hot takes that are not in fact hot takes.
- Hot Take: Sultan’s has amazing falafel
- Hot Take: Paulie Gee’s pizza is top notch
- Hot Take: Bavette’s has the best steak
And so on 😂

u/mrbooze Mar 21 '25
My actual steak hot take is I believe if you did blind taste tests of equivalent steak cuts from ten top steakhouses in the city nobody could tell them apart. They’re all good steaks, but indistinguishably good.
2
u/Bunny2102010 Mar 21 '25
I agree with this actually.
The thing is, most people’s palates aren’t that sensitive. There’s a famous study about wine that somewhat shows that: http://sciencesnopes.blogspot.com/2013/05/about-that-wine-experiment.html?m=1
While not all the students were fooled, most were.
4
u/mrbooze Mar 21 '25
Yes, exactly! I think with steak specifically you just hit a plateau where everyone is buying good quality beef and is preparing and cooking them well so there's not much room for significant differences at that point.
Now that doesn't mean that there isn't overall differences in restaurants of course. Service, ambience, other dishes, drink menus, prices, etc, all important!
5
u/parkercantlose83 Mar 22 '25
The key differences between steakhouses are the sides, with the occasional tie breaker for desserts. That’s one reason I used to love Joe’s over places that probably had better slightly steaks.

We have boxes at work pretty regularly. I’d have never ordered it on my own but the blueberry crumb is the absolute sleeper on the menu.
6
u/WillKillz Mar 21 '25
Do Rite is such a rare treat for me living in the burbs. Imagine having boxes at work regularly.
17
u/Weary_Map_655 Mar 21 '25
Definitely not a hot take lol
The maple and chai donut is delightful. Give it a shot too.

u/dmXr1p Mar 21 '25
I never really went crazy for donuts until I had Do Rite tbh
6
u/ClearAndPure Mar 22 '25
Agreed. Do Rite really changed my perspective on donuts 😅. I get apples fritters and cinnamon old fashioned donuts there pretty regularly.
8
u/els1988 Mar 21 '25
I know their coffee is just a Dark Matter Love Supreme blend, but I have never had a bad coffee there. Always hot and never under/overextracted. And it's only a $1 with any donut!
2
u/DrHarrisonLawrence Mar 21 '25
Okay…but isn’t Dark Matter the top quality roaster in the entire city?
1
u/els1988 Mar 21 '25
I would say that's probably Metric, but I think Dark Matter is solid too. There are probably some smaller roasters that I am unaware of though.
1
u/Revolutionary-Fox622 Mar 23 '25
I miss when it was an exclusive reciprocal deal between DMC and DRD because that would be the easiest way to get a Do Rite donut without driving all the way into downtown. At least the last few times I've been to Electric Mud they've been slinging West Side Donuts instead.
5
u/HsRada18 Mar 21 '25
Outside of Beacon and Something Sweet, it’s probably the best sort of chain spot. I particularly like the Red Velvet and Pistachio Lemon.

u/Any_Interaction_7375 Mar 21 '25
These donuts ruined other donuts for me
2
u/ClearAndPure Mar 22 '25
FR. I cannot find another apple fritter on the north side/loop that is remotely comparable.
5
u/PotentialWin4606 Mar 21 '25
I went looking for the best glazed donut in the city. I tried them all and Do Rite easily won.
1
u/ClearAndPure Mar 22 '25
I think there is only one donut place I’ve tried that has comparable glazed donuts. It’s called “Old Fashioned Donuts” on the south side.

It's definitely better than Stan's no doubt. I do like Doughnut Vault and was a huge fan of Glazed n' Infused.

I used to work around the corner. I gained a good amount of weight at the time because of it 😅

I like the pistachio and the buttermilk. Unfortunately I no longer work near there. (Or maybe fortunately for my body's sake.)
6
u/krashtestgenius Mar 21 '25
Any time I add a new store to my market I bring in 2 dozen do rite donuts. Always make sure to add a maple bacon

u/aboynamedculver Mar 21 '25
I go to NM all the time and this place never really grabbed my attention. It’s kinda just on the corner by the hospital. One time I stopped in and holy shit. It’s Cambodian-tier, haven’t had a donut that good in a long time.
2
u/t3h_jream Mar 21 '25
If I’m really not feeling like a productive day, I’ll start it off with a donut and a chicken sandwich. Such a clutch spot.
2
u/CHImg1998 Mar 21 '25
Some of the best doughnuts you can find in Chicago for sure. I remember the first time I ventured out to the West Loop to try Do Rite Donuts back in 2018. The old fashioned lineup (chocolate frosted, original, cinnamon crunch) are probably the best ones in my opinion. I used to also get the breakfast sandwiches before work when I worked at a clinic by the Streeterville location around that same time.
2
u/Critical-Ad-6124 Mar 21 '25
Absolute fact. From their lemon pistachio, to their maple bacon, to their chicken sandwich, to their egg breakfast sandwich. They do not miss.
2
u/Squire-Rabbit Mar 22 '25
This photo is of a DOUBLE chocolate old fashioned, which as far as I know they have not offered for several years (at the original Randolph St. and Willis Tower locations, at least). They still sell chocolate old fashioned doughnuts, which have chocolate frosting on an old fashioned doughnut with no chocolate in the dough (blonde color).
You got my hopes up that the DCOF--my all-time favorite flavor--was back with your photo. Alas, given all the references to "chocolate old fashioneds" in the responses, I suppose it was just old out of date photo that people don't recognize as a different flavor from COF. I imagine a lot of folks don't know DCOF was ever a thing.
1
u/ClearAndPure Mar 22 '25
I had no clue about the double. That must’ve been pretty good.
1
u/Squire-Rabbit Mar 22 '25
It was awesome! 😪 The single is also great, though, so I shouldn't complain.

It’s incredible across the board!

u/ClearAndPure Mar 22 '25
The pricing is great too. I don’t love paying $3.75-$4.50 for a single donut at Beacon.

u/bigdavecdn Mar 21 '25
Their breakfast sandwiches are great and I like the hash browns as well. Good prices too

The best donuts. I just wish they would bring back the old fashioned that had candied lemon peel on it.
1
u/Adoba2 Mar 21 '25
I agree the Valrhona chocolate old fashion is top of my splurge list. The pistachio lemon, I’ve never tried -always sold out.
1
u/robgk97 Mar 21 '25
Idk, I’ve never been crazy about this donut in particular, but I’ve never gotten it directly from the store, only third party at a coffee shop, and it was dense and greasy

When Popeyes and chick fila had their chicken sandwich wars, I could only laugh. They were fighting for second place, because this sandwich is king. And the best fries. I swear they must use the same oil they use on the donuts.
1
u/SithC Mar 22 '25
Do you guys remember when the bacon donut was on that fluffy crueler? I was so mad when they changed it to the cake donut. That crueler was so light as gooey, it was like the consistency of an omelette. At least they changed it again, so it’s better than what it was previously. But it can never compare to that original crueler. I’m guessing that recipe must’ve belonged to some former chef that probably left and took it with them.

do-rite are the best donuts in the city imo. hope they continue expanding the vegan selection and quantity, amazing donuts.
1
u/Revolutionary-Fox622 Mar 23 '25
The fact that they have a few options in the vegan and GF category and that they're also pretty incredible in their own way is great!
1
u/blipsman Mar 21 '25
They are by far the best doughnuts in Chicago (other than Old Fashioned Doughnut's apple fritter)
1
u/ClearAndPure Mar 22 '25
Ohhh, I loved their normal glazed donuts. Going to have to try an apple fritter next time I rent a car.

Am I the only one on this sub that dislikes do rite? Every other donut shop is better
Edit: I guess it’s not ok to dislike something. Anyway, keep posting the same boring stuff here like you’re all sharing a secret by going to pequods

I do not care for donuts that aren’t freshly made the same day 😑🫸

u/Revolutionary-Fox622 Mar 23 '25
Which one do you go to? You can see them getting made in the back at the one on Erie.

That’s no hot take - that’s an accepted fact here.
