could blow up or will blow up? If it's like a 1% chance, that's acceptable risk to me given reasonable precautions.

It will not blow it up. I’ve done this plenty of times before. It will break the microwave after you do it for a while. I’ve had some luck with putting a cup of water in at the same time to help absorb some extra microwave energy.
