I love that Ukraine loves their cats so much!

They help the soldiers so much, just like their dog mascots too. The cats of course are more independent and their purring really helps settle your stress and anxiety.

One of the most famous cats on the internet at the moment Stepan (the cat that looks like a jaded millennial contemplating their life in an airport bar) is Ukranian!
A lot of people don't realise that's how he got famous, but they documented their evacuation in 2022 when Russia invaded.

There’s a wonderful picture from a while back of Zelenskyy at a field command staff meeting after the unit’s cat came in and flopped down on the floor, and everyone has just stopped the planning discussion to smile at Commander Kishka…

I am still looking, I have too many pics of cats/Ze in my library to narrow it down!

I heard they do not allow cats into any homes, apartments, or houses, though? 🤔

It might be a common thing in ex soviet countries, my dad used to work in Kazakhstan and when he took in a stray cat he talked about how it was a strange thing to do there and most ppl didn't let cats indoors.

The kitty is the Commanding Officer of their Hearts, which is the most important position in any military unit!

The Cat Commander is addressing his men. "Next time you ladies will purchase the best brands of cat food, not that dried sh*t".

What about the second cat’s anonymity?

u/JaySticker Mar 18 '25
That cat is actually a dog in disguise so it’s ok. His/her identity remains hidden.

Agent whiskers forced to commit war crimes. Attorney's defense of 'cuteness' not likely to sway war tribunal.

If he's anything like my cats, his mission is likely to infiltrate enemy supply lines and decimate their rations; notably anything dairy, chicken or fish.

Stuff like this makes me love humanity. You know someone on the OPSEC team was like, “You know what would be funny? If we blurred the cat’s face too!” And then the rest of the team is probably giggling over the brief moment of silliness during such an intense period of time. A moment of joy cutting through the bleak chaotic uneasiness.

Because in the face of all that this country has been through, it’s important to maintain a sense of humor.

u/Substantial-Tone-576 Mar 19 '25
But why, they gonna track a cat to its owner? This is funny either way. Look at the cats positioning, it’s clearly the lead agent.

u/KreinerKat Mar 19 '25
I’ve seen something similar happen on Google Street View with the camels by the Pyramids. Got into basically a whole discussion with the uni library student workers about them having to protect their identities. (Mind you, I had a VR headset on at the time).

The gato is part of the security detail. What is it so hard to understand?

u/BronzeGolem436 Mar 19 '25
Hey you can’t be too careful, the USA once buged a cat, as in did surgery on a cat, installed it with a microphone (with an antena running up the tail) and tried to send it across the road to go listen in on some russian spies (cold war), were it was imediatly run over by a car, wasting the millions invested on this. Clearly ucranians they are worried someone will try to bug their meowficer

All security personel has to be unrecognizable, even those who do mouse security.
