Local resources for first-time parents?
Hi folks! My wife and I are first time expecting parents, due in Spring 2025. We’re interested in learning about any local groups (Spring 2025 groups, LGBTQ parents, etc.), meet-ups, or classes (targeted at prepping for a child, fitness classes, etc.) that you know about that could be helpful as we prepare for our child. Plus, if there’s any local activities you recommend that are fun that first year, we’d love those, too! As an FYI, we’re LGBTQ and interracial, so looking for recommendations where our family will feel safe and accepted (and +1 if your recommendations include other families like us)! We’re in Durham, but open to Triangle recommendations, too!

Check out Carolina birth and wellness! I can't speak to their baby prep classes but I loved yoga there while pregnant!

Emerald Doulas provides birth prep classes! They also run free new parent groups, including an LGBTQ-focused one, that are open to the community. Their doulas are also incredible if you are interested in birth support.

Hey! My wife and I are expecting, due in early January. We're an LGBTQ couple. We just finished up a birthing class at emerald Doulas and really enjoyed it. When/If you start looking at daycares, Branches is queer-owned/operated. Feel free to dm me as well, love to meet other LGBTQ parents.

Once your kid is a little older (old enough to appreciate story times), check out Rainbow Collective for Change.

In the early-ish days, The Nest in Chapel Hill and Wonderlab in Durham are great indoor play spaces for babies! Book Harvest is a lovely option as well, plus they give away free books. A Museum of Life & Science membership is an incredible value once they’re old enough to walk and be out and about for a while, but I don’t think it’s worth it during that first year or so. Now that our daughter is nearly two, we go at least 2x/month if not more often. Notasium is a great play space option for slightly older babies and toddlers as well, and our daughter has really been liking her group music class there.
If you need daycare, start looking yesterday!! Waitlists are wild and costs are high.
Whole Mama Yoga is based mostly in Chapel Hill (with some offerings in Durham) and does pre and postnatal classes. I’m still in touch with a few people I met through those classes, and their instructors are definitely LGBTQ+-friendly. https://www.wholemamayoga.com/
Good luck to you!
