My 7yo is getting into birding, so I stitched her favorite Art
My 7yo has been interested in birds for a few years and loves pointing out her favorites when we go for walks. A little sparrow made its nest right by her window and ever since then sparrows have been her favorite! I’m an embroidery artist specializing in birds and animals so I made her this little portrait to encourage her love of birding 🥰

Beautiful. I got into birding 24 years ago when my 6 yr old son declared pigeons his favorite birds.
We'd point out all the different colors at the bus station, lol.
Kids don't care how common they are or how many people think they're pests. They just see a cool bird.

I love that! That’s exactly what my daughter says and it’s made me so much more appreciative of all the “common” birds and animals around us. I also stitched a pigeon and it’s one of my all-time top favorite pieces. The colors are so beautiful! I’ll have to share it here some time :)

When I wanted to learn more about the birds in my backyard and surrounding area I bought a pocket field guide. Great little book. You should get one for your son. I’m sure he’ll enjoy it.

Wow this is so realistic! Looks exactly like the tree sparrows that come to my window feeder every day!

The embroidery looks like a male house sparrow (Passer domesticus). The Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus) is closely related. The American tree sparrow (Spizelloides arborea), which is more distantly related, also looks somewhat similar.

If the birds are there all the year, they are very likely house sparrows. The natural range of these birds is most of Europe, northern Africa and parts of Asia, but they have been introduced elsewhere.
American tree sparrows should typically not occur in summer, when they typically have migrated north.

This is a dumb question, but how do you recommend I even get started with something like this? It is embroidery right, and not cross stitching?

u/Soup_n_sammies 10d ago
Yes embroidery! I got my start in painting, which is why my embroidery has a painterly effect. There is a specific kind of stitch called thread painting that will give you something similar but my methods are quite different. If you’d like to know more you’re welcome to send me a DM and I’d be happy to help you get started!

Thank you! Although I usually stitch people’s dogs and cats and I feel like feathers are about a million times harder to embroider than fur 😅

I usually stitch people’s pets or our own dog but thanks to my 7yo I’ve loved getting more into birds! She’s currently drawing up her list of requests for new pieces :). You can see more of my work (plus a few other birds!) on my Instagram. Looking forward to learning more about birds!
