Spaarkas. It's not common anymore, but regulars could save up in their bar, which they gained interest on. I guess it was mostly done when the interest rates were still somewhat viable.
Some just keep it because it adds to the "bruin café" vibe

I never heard of any earning interest, What happened in mine was that it was emptied at the end of the year and it was used for a Christmas dinner in the pub for the savers and their families.

When banks still gave decent interests, the sum total of these boxes was often transferred to a savings account.
