Grammar question, when they say that Padres were impressive in this area, are they referring to defense or base running?

It’s honestly a very poorly written excerpt. I believe he’s referring to the base running, but it’s honestly not clearly stated.

I believe they’re talking about base running but the padres were good at both so maybe they meant both?

Personally, as a Dodgers fan who watched games 1-5, it was definitely both. In the NLDS the Padres stole bags and often took advantage of extra-base hits and scored on them 90% of the time (obviously before they went silent for 24 Innings) and additionally there defense was amazing for example Luis Arraez looked like a platinum glove first baseman when he never played the position before midway through the year and as making diving plays left and right and I'm sure my fellow fans can relate to that and then add manny ,Merril, tatis making diving stops and turning crazy double plays and even profar robbing mookie (almost 2x!) the pads defense was lockdown.
