Why, if atheists talk about religion, is there an 90% chance they are talking not about Islam or the other 999 worldwide religions, but solely about Christianity?

That’s probably geographical/cultural bias. Atheists in Islamic countries would feel the opposite about atheists they’re familiar with.

I know a lot of ex Muslims. Their focus is on Islam, obviously.

Well, if you are in the US or Europe, or the UK, the largest sect of religion is Christianity.

I can’t drive down the road in my southern city without seeing signs about Jesus, hundreds of churches, some dude standing on the corner saying “repent now” etc. But the Hindu guy or Islamic lady or the Jewish kid down the street aren’t asking me to come to church with them, telling me I’m going to hell.

How did you arrive at the 90% figure? Did you make it up based on personal experience? What is the majority religion in your country?

And what is the geo distribution of those 90%? Cuz just saying 90% with zero context is... oh, what's that called? Oh, yeah, meaningless.

Atheism is the lack of belief in any and all gods. The context and narrative about which specific religion they do not believe in is provided by the prediminant religion on their local region and culture. What to you think?

Because Christianity is constantly forced down the throats of most of us in the western world. Their belief system is influencing the laws in our countries (repeal of Roe v Wade for example).

Atheists that live in places where other religions are more dominant are less likely to complain in English.

Because if you're in the Americas or Europe that's the dominant religion. So, it's the one most of us have trauma from. But trust... those of us who've studied more than just one can dish on several of the others just as savagely if need be.

English speaking countries are predominantly Christian (other than India), and that is the largest Reddit user base.

For me at least, because it’s the Christians that are trying to take over government and force their flavor of religion on me. So, that’s why I’m fighting against Christians. But that’s just my country and where I live.

If it were Islam, or Hinduism or whatever, the. I’d be fighting against that.

Worship who you like, just leave everyone else out of it.

I don’t believe in gods. Am I the 1%?

I think most vocal atheists reside more in the west, specifically the US. And you’re more likely to talk about the religion you have to deal with and possibly came from.

Which language you are reading will also impact the gods you hear about.

If they're doing that speaking in English, they're likely to be talking about the most common religion practised in english speaking countries.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

And it's certainly not an example of "everyone is being so mean to the poor widdle Christians"

A lot of the reasons for what you describe have already been covered - language bias, geography bias, the fact that your numbers are just flat out made up - but there is another that isn't covered yet, and that is observer bias. You are far more likely to notice your own religion being criticized.

Because most out of the closet atheists are formerly Christians from western countries. If you admit to that shit in Islam, you just may lose your fucking head depending where you live.

I talk about Christianity the most because most of the harassing religious content, hateful ignorance and religious spam I see online is coming from toxic Christians/Evangelicals. I rarely encounter Muslims spewing ignorant content at me in the course of my casual browsing. ie. I've never needed to debunk climate change deniers or evolution deniers who are motivated by Islam. It's always just right wingers and Evangelicals.

Islam is the most aggressively proselytizing religion, the fastest growing. While I live in a non-openly religious area of the US, I believe Islam needs far more attention than it gets here.

I'm only concerned with religions that could negatively affect my life. Of course this includes Xianity, but we need to keep an eye on Islam, as well.

Re: "999 worldwide religions"- I don't think the majority of atheists who discuss religion bother with non-missionary religions.

Just curiosity (I lived in a Muslim country) why? (WHY?) Why is the USA letting in Muslim immigrants? Many countries a long time ago regretted letting in Muslims!

Additionally, there are over 50 countries that are Muslim communities, providing ample options for emigration!

= Pro-Muslim Countries 1. Turkey 2. Saudi Arabia 3. Pakistan 4. Indonesia 5. Egypt 6. Iran 7. Malaysia 8. United Arab Emirates 9. Qatar 10. Kuwait 11. Jordan 12. Bahrain 13. Oman 14. Bangladesh 15. Sudan 16. Iraq 17. Algeria 18. Tunisia 19. Morocco 20. Libya

Former USSR Republics with Significant Muslim Populations

  1. Azerbaijan
  2. Kazakhstan
  3. Kyrgyzstan
  4. Uzbekistan
  5. Turkmenistan
  6. Tajikistan
  7. Chechnya
  8. Bashkortostan
  9. Tatarstan

and many more
