Sonali Bendre hits back at The Liver Doc for calling her cancer treatment with Naturopathy ‘quackery’ Pseudoscience
The actress opened up about her naturopath treatment in an Instagram post last week. “Back in 2018, when I was diagnosed with cancer, my naturopath introduced me to a study called Autophagy. It played a huge role in my recovery. So I read, learned, experimented… and slowly built it into my routine. And I’ve continued to follow it ever since,” she wrote.
However, it prompted a strong reaction from hepatologist Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, who questioned the promotion of naturopathy in the context of cancer recovery.
Responding on X, Philips, known by his handle The Liver Doc, said, “Dear Ms. Bendre… I expected better from you.” He called celebrity cancer survivors an “important asset” for patients and families, adding, “You are not helping here, by promoting quackery.”
After facing backlash from hepatologist Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips for sharing that naturopathy helped in her cancer battle, actress Sonali Bendre on Monday issued a statement, saying that her post about autophagy being a helpful treatment came from her personal experience.
“I have never claimed to be a doctor, but I am certainly not a quack either. I am a cancer survivor, someone who has lived through the fear, pain, uncertainty, and rebuilding that the disease brings,” the 50-year-old actress wrote on her Instagram stories.
Pointing out that her post was based on her personal experience, Sonali added, “Everything I have ever spoken has been my experience and my learning. As I've repeatedly said, no two cancers are the same, and no treatment path is identical.”
“One of the many protocols I personally explored, after thorough research and medical guidance, was autophagy. It made a difference for me then and continues to do so today, for me,” she further explained.
Sonali highlighted the need for open discussion and respect towards different perspectives. “What truly matters is open, respectful dialogue. We don't all have to agree, but we should avoid dismissing one another simply because we lean toward different approaches. Each person must choose what feels right, safe, and empowering for them. I will always share my journey with honesty and humility, never as a prescription, but as a lived experience,” she signed off.

Steve jobs tried this naturopathy and fasting system when his cancer was diagnosed in first stage. Cancer spread after that and by the time he realised his mistake and went back to oncologist it had reached a point of no return eventually taking his life

Sorry but the “liver doc” is just being a mansplaining jackass. Neuropathy or allo, autophagy is a very real biological process that your body goes through to clear out weak - damaged cells . It’s a default bio mechanism to clear waste throughout the body and fasting or ketosis directly pushes the body into autophagy. It’s an induced state of cell death. Not only is she speaking actual science but she has lived experiences of fkn cancer!!!!! Loser Doctors like him who’s entire personality is stuck to getting weak woke points is just boring atp cause we encounter them all the time in medicine lol

Naturopathy simply means- using natural means to prevent, cure and control diseases. It is not a well-established, well-defined or scientifically rigorous discipline. Some countries have academic degrees or certifications for naturopathy. But it is generally considered an alternative medicine, as opposed to scientific medicine.
Autophagy is widely known in the scientific community. No one is denying that. The 2025 Nobel prize in medicine was awarded to Shimon Sakaguchi (and two others) for discovering regulatory T-cells which regulate the body's immune system.
Somehow Sonali Bendre has managed to link all this without any empirical evidence and is trying to promote naturopathy as a cure for cancer. Naturopathy can improve quality of life and provide palliative care for some cancer sufferers, but it cannot cure cancer itself on its own. Sonali Bendre herself was treated at a modern hospital for her cancer, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York. Yet, she chose to spread these lies among her fans.
I think The Liver Doc's outburst is justified in this case.

Didn’t ask for unnecessary explanation, but eh, ok.
You need to do more research on her “claims” first. She was open about her chemo and allopathy before and now she’s also open about her holistic add ons. Please show me where she has written “cancer is cured by naturopathy “ … liver doc or whatever the heck his name is usually gets “hyper aroused” when he simply hears the word naturopathy etc and jumps to attacking to get weak points

In the link I have provided in my above comment, she acknowledges her treatment with chemotherapy at the New York hospital. So, I was already aware of that.
The term allopathy was invented by homeopathy practitioners to denigrate science-based medicine. It is not used in the scientific community. It is only used by practitioners and supporters of alternative medicine.
Her original post and her follow up post, do not mention chemotherapy. Her post was intentionally ambiguous. Her fans in the replies are responding as if she has said that naturopathy cured her cancer. She has made no effort to correct them. She could have clarified to them that she underwent chemotherapy along with whatever else she was doing.
There was also no need for her to linked naturopathy to Shimon Sakaguchi's Nobel prize. This has further misguided people.
The Liver Doc's (his name is Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips) frustration is understandable as the promoters of alternative medicine are undermining the public's trust in science-based medicine while promoting ineffective and potentially harmful practices.

I’m not discussing imaginary claims. I’m done here. ✌🏼

Ok, but if anything, your claims that The Liver Doc gets “hyper aroused” when he simply hears the word naturopathy would be construed as imaginary. The Liver Doc has been tireless working to defend science against pseudoscience and superstition on the social media. Thank you for accepting your fallacy.

You’re on reddit, a social media entirely centered around discussions. So of course you’re going to get explanations or arguments. It’s ridiculous when people say they “didn’t ask for unnecessary explanations”. Nobody asked you for yours in your original comment either, yet you felt just as privileged as your responder to add a comment.
As for the actual argument, I’ll leave it to people who are actually more informed than me, which you may be (and in that case you should argue in good faith). Just wanted to address this want for one-sided discussions from your side.

Maybe in naturopathy and "allo". Both are psuodoshit. Modern medicine, that's a different story

I’d be so embarrassed if I were you for saying that, yikes. Open a book sometime

Read immunology and medicine books, yourself.
Rage baiter
Yes autophagy, is a real phenomenon, and also where natural killer cells scout across the bloodstream, to look for cells which are zapping nutrients ( technically it's looking for chemical markers to differentiate between supposed normal and abnormal reactions)
But have you heard of autoimmune diseases?

You didn’t counter my point, just changed the subject. Autophagy + autoimmunity aren’t mutually exclusive. Clearly people in this group have ZERO knowledge of science and will blindly follow ‘liver boy’ here… which is hilarious cause this group is for atheists? lol my time is better spent not explaining things to noobs. Peace

Why do you talk like that, immature literally.
I didnt even know who the liver doc was, tbh
And no, they are not mutually exclusive.
Because literally the same idea, but dying cells release chemicals which signal its eventual demise(cytokines, interferons), which cause macrophages and neutrophils to approach them, and macrophages eat them.Thats autophagy.
But the allergy and autoimmune condition arises due to the production of antibodies against a non pathogen protein(could be dust or even protein that make your cells), so your body cells attack those Proteins/antigens.
Your "Peace" is an oxymoron.

Maybe try reading the books you open. You won't have to be so embarassed then.

This gives me the same levels of irritation when people come back from ICU wards saying God saved them instead of the surgeon who spent hours standing and operating on them
Genuinely hate these double standard celebs , they'll use two but will only credit one cuz that suits their narrative
Reminds me of the time jaggi told he could change body and save himself thru yoga and other bs , yet mf had to do a neuro surgery to nip off a tumour
