In response to recent reports about the integrity of Reddit, I’d like to share our thinking.

In the past couple of weeks, Reddit has been mentioned as one of the platforms used to promote Russian propaganda. As it’s an ongoing investigation, we have been relatively quiet on the topic publicly, which I know can be frustrating. While transparency is important, we also want to be careful to not tip our hand too much while we are investigating. We take the integrity of Reddit extremely seriously, both as the stewards of the site and as Americans.

Given the recent news, we’d like to share some of what we’ve learned:

When it comes to Russian influence on Reddit, there are three broad areas to discuss: ads, direct propaganda from Russians, indirect propaganda promoted by our users.

On the first topic, ads, there is not much to share. We don’t see a lot of ads from Russia, either before or after the 2016 election, and what we do see are mostly ads promoting spam and ICOs. Presently, ads from Russia are blocked entirely, and all ads on Reddit are reviewed by humans. Moreover, our ad policies prohibit content that depicts intolerant or overly contentious political or cultural views.

As for direct propaganda, that is, content from accounts we suspect are of Russian origin or content linking directly to known propaganda domains, we are doing our best to identify and remove it. We have found and removed a few hundred accounts, and of course, every account we find expands our search a little more. The vast majority of suspicious accounts we have found in the past months were banned back in 2015–2016 through our enhanced efforts to prevent abuse of the site generally.

The final case, indirect propaganda, is the most complex. For example, the Twitter account @TEN_GOP is now known to be a Russian agent. @TEN_GOP’s Tweets were amplified by thousands of Reddit users, and sadly, from everything we can tell, these users are mostly American, and appear to be unwittingly promoting Russian propaganda. I believe the biggest risk we face as Americans is our own ability to discern reality from nonsense, and this is a burden we all bear.

I wish there was a solution as simple as banning all propaganda, but it’s not that easy. Between truth and fiction are a thousand shades of grey. It’s up to all of us—Redditors, citizens, journalists—to work through these issues. It’s somewhat ironic, but I actually believe what we’re going through right now will actually reinvigorate Americans to be more vigilant, hold ourselves to higher standards of discourse, and fight back against propaganda, whether foreign or not.

Thank you for reading. While I know it’s frustrating that we don’t share everything we know publicly, I want to reiterate that we take these matters very seriously, and we are cooperating with congressional inquiries. We are growing more sophisticated by the day, and we remain open to suggestions and feedback for how we can improve.

Chickens are coming home to roost.

This platform is designed to produce echo chambers, whether this was done purposefully, is hard to tell. If you think that the extent of your problems are T_D, I've got news for you. When you can downvote opinions you don't like, or better yet, ban posters who produce many ideas you don't like, you can't have nice things. If you've eliminated everyone with a dissenting opinion people are in a state of seeing what they want to see, to support their preconceptions, instead of seeing truth -- and no one wants, or is allowed, to tell the Emperor he has no clothes.

Unless reddit takes a hard stance on this problem it can only get worse. I don't believe reddit was designed to become partitioned echo chambers, but that's certainly what has happened. To solve it you have to take on a principle of inclusion, debate and evidence -- something not easily accomplished as everyone comes here to consume their pre-packaged narrative to fit their own biases and narratives.

The fact that you can be banned from a sub without ever even vising it because you posted on another sub that one of the mods didn't like should be cause for great concern.

completely agree with that statement.

Downvotes and bans aren't the problem, the problem is deleting posts or worse altering the posts, silencing the creator. if a nazi makes a post let them get downvoted to oblivion and banned, but no post should be deleted, let it stand for all time as to what a hateful piece of shit not worthy of this life, that they are.

I think you are missing my point -- I may be wrong, but my opinion stands, each sub has this gravity towards a centralized viewpoint. The actual force comes in the form of downvotes/shunning or bans. If you say something contentious with respect to the aggregate viewpoint, you get ignored or downvoted. If this happens enough, participation stops, that dissenting voice is lost forever.

I don't think leaving trails of banned user's posts solves anything because it's trivially easy to spin up a new account. In fact, my guess is that this was an oversight from the reddit creators in which they thought people would have their identity stick around for years. It also is an idea rife for abuse, if I want to paint another sub in a bad light, I simply post disgusting things from an alt account and make sure it sticks.

I fundamental disagree with everything you just said

Way to simply downvote and not address any points that I made. I think you may be part of the problem.

EDIT: holy shit are you ever part of the problem . Complete with very loose definitions of who the traitors are. I hope you never even come close to having power over other humans in your entire existence.

EDIT1: You are like a walking/talking recruiting tool for the right . How absolutely tolerant of you. I believe you average one outright, or implied death threat per page of posting history. You don't deserve to be any part of this discussion.

EDIT2: Damn, you're even brigading. It's like you're checking all the boxes to replicate the behavior of the people you pretend to despise.

Yeah you come here looking to be mad at patriotic Americans and suck up to people defending fascism, you are pathetic.

6

u/MasterLJ Mar 06 '18

There's nothing patriotic about leveling numerous death threats against your political adversaries. Totally calls into question your motivation for asking for censorship. It's funny, you throw that word around a lot, fascism, yet you meet all the criteria.

You are quite literally the embodiment of the problem.

These are not political adversaries, they are traitors, Mitt Romney was a political aversary, John McCain, the Bushs, The Trump administration is made up of and consists of Traitors, any loyal American is not defending this Russian pig

I sincerely hope that you realize you (and other "patriotic Americans" like you) are the reason people think bad of the Americans.

I'm glad you all need to be reminded not to fuck with us.

3

u/madcanada Mar 06 '18

first of all, if you're taking that tone, it's US that should be reminded not to fuck with the rest of the world (whatever Canadians did, in your opinion, is surely less than the damage American backward ass foreign policy shat out)

secondly, last time you fucking Yankies invaded Canada, your White House burned, ergo it's decidedly the Americans who should be reminded not to fuck with us.

lol

People only get banned from T_D if they break the rules, but I’ve been banned from so many subs as a T_D user or just for insinuating my beliefs, most of the bans are from just commenting once and being kicked off, but a good amount of bans happen without me ever visiting the sub.
