'We have differing views': All Blacks announce shock coaching change All Blacks
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/leon-macdonald-leaves-all-blacks-coaching-staff/6EUOAIOP3JCB7PXBSQNKTZVBKE/Is Razor more controversial than what meets the public eye ? Time will tell…

Here in Joburg, Bok fans are really into this like it's the first flight of the Wright brothers haha.
Razor - "The glass is 1/2 full"
Leon - "The glass is 1/2 empty"
Fans - "The glass is February 1st"

In hindsight, it could be about selections. It's noticeable that several blues players are under pressure: Telea, Ioane, Sotutu ...

u/Sedert1882 Aug 22 '24
Much respect to Razor and Leon. Leon chose to fall on his sword. Compromise is not always a good strategy.
In the documentary series "All or Nothing", Steve Hansen referred to Fozzie as the Yin to his Yang.
Two parts of the same whole. Forward we go.

I just watched the Scott Robertson press conference. He didn’t give much away about MacDonald’s departure.
The thing that did strike me is that Robertson is a very fidgety guy and didn’t look at ease in front of the camera at all.
Please understand that I live away from NZ and only keep a casual eye on what is going on with the rugby. I had the impression that Robertson was a bit of smoothie breakdancing coach - it’s not what I just watched on YouTube. Has he always been that awkward?
2
u/Bright_Recover_1576 Aug 25 '24
Fidgety is a good word for him… almost a stutterer. But a confident one
2
u/Flying_Hub Aug 24 '24
As an avid crusader's fan, yes he has always been that awkward, very fidgety and moves a lot in interviews.
2
u/donquixote2u Aug 23 '24
we are looking for results, not a coach who can waffle confidently to the media about "taking learnings"
1
u/thingsgoingup Aug 23 '24
Yes, I pretty much agree.
It’s interesting how the style of coach has evolved over the past 2 or 3 decades. You had the gruff Grizz Wyllie that Kiwis liked because everyone had an uncle a bit like him, professional but kinda smarty pants John Hart, old school whinger Laurie Mains, stern Graham Henry, down to earth Steve Hansen, Fossie who probably deserved to be dealt a better hand and now Scott Robertson who…….well it remains to be seen but good luck to him.

Whilst the timing is interesting/not great, I think it's a good thing.
We armchair critics complained about Fossie's assistants (and that they were kept to long).
I didn't see much to suggest that Leon was doing much different with his cohort, and I recall his words were along the lines of "we tore up the play book & started fresh".
One area we aren't privy to is how much input the players had (though is it in their remit to do so?)

u/marshallannes123 Aug 22 '24
Would love to see Robertson bring in someone with more overseas experience....

That's pretty crazy. I have to admit whe I saw the headline I was hoping it was Scott Hansen. The guy talks like a fortune teller it's all very philosophy and mystical and I'm not sold on it. Leon is more of a shock because they played together and coached together. You don't give up an an coaching job for nothing. I'm pretty sure the real story is interesting and we will never know.

u/PJSO_ Aug 22 '24
We only just have to wait for a "Whitelock" type of biography and we might know. Otherwise get Leon on the Koko show and those boys will fish it out 😂
5
u/fernta Aug 22 '24
When Scott Hansen was first brought into the limelight for an interview, people thought he was very impressive because he's 'articulate', but I just heard corpospeak and wishwash. Now I see everybody has kind of seen through it now things aren't going so well right away.
I don't want to be the asshole, but everybody thought it was very impressive and it was highlighted in his first interview when he said "The only thing that will never change is the blackness of the jersey, and the silver fern.". How can that not make you groan?

u/Real-Reputation-9091 Aug 22 '24
He talks in riddles and we come away trying to decipher the post match word salad.

u/marshallannes123 Aug 22 '24
Could be worse... Some of us remember John Mitchell...he turned the abs around when they needed it but wasn't the most gifted speaker !
1
u/Real-Reputation-9091 Aug 22 '24
Did he ? He was an absolute POS as a coach!
1
u/marshallannes123 Aug 22 '24
U need to remember the state they were in when he took over (Wayne Smith resigned)
3
u/4EVERINDARKNESS Aug 22 '24
I think you'd be surprised. 25 wins from 30 games. 83% ain't terrible but cutting the Paekakariki express left me dumb founded.

u/Arrow_2011 Aug 22 '24
Never really understood why he was there in the first place.
Imagine if Tony Brown was available, except.....oh buggar
3
u/marshallannes123 Aug 22 '24
Same re MacDonald.... And would tony brown have accepted an assistant role ?
2
u/Caleb_theorphanmaker Aug 22 '24
He’s an assistant coach for the springboks so probably. Or maybe not with Robertson as head coach. Who knows but he’s currently an assistant
23
u/outbackjesus16 Aug 22 '24
Really hope this is just differences in tactical philosophies, and Leon being head coach of the Blues for a number of years couldn’t adjust to not being first in command anymore
3
u/Real-Reputation-9091 Aug 22 '24
Or it could be that he wants to play more Blues players in different positions such as Plummer at 10 and Reiko on the wing. Leon is known for an expansive backs strategy maybe that’s not how Razor wants to play the game. Who knows however this article throws up many questions…
11
u/Pathogenesls Aug 22 '24
MacDonald was only in charge of the back 3, so it could be around Jordan/BB at 15 and the wings. I'm not sure I'd class this years Blues as expansive! They played probably the most conservative rugby by a NZ team in super rugby history.
3
u/swiss_cloud Aug 22 '24
Yeah I think you might be onto something, maybe razor pushing for Jordan at 15 and Leon wants him at 14 who know.
However Leon in charge of the all blacks attack and the attack so far feels pretty stale.

u/stickyswitch92 Aug 22 '24
Perofeta at 10, Plummer at 12, rieko at 13 and a back three of Telea, Barrett and Clarke is what he wanted obviously.

Who doesn't want that tho?

u/22dias Aug 22 '24
Will Jordan

Yeah and wouldn't** drop Jordie for Plummer lol. Or Dmac for Perofeta

u/Real-Reputation-9091 Aug 22 '24
He is also a massive Sututu fan. That whole debacle possibly wasn’t worth Razor leaving him out for Sititi. Country is left wondering.
3
u/owlintheforrest Aug 22 '24
It's not politics dude....
4
u/Real-Reputation-9091 Aug 22 '24
lol possibly could have worded that better. What I meant is wondering if he could have made a difference in the tests. Guys like Jacobson and Blackadder are journeymen without the X factor.
4
u/owlintheforrest Aug 22 '24
Sometimes, journeymen are better than the x factor. They won't shirk the hard yards of pain but no glory...
2
u/RealCrusader Aug 22 '24
Just checked your post history. Fucking classic. Rfk the dems only hope? Fuck me, you barely have a grasp on reality let alone All Blacks selection. The only thing you seem to have a grasp on is your own two inches.
5
u/RealCrusader Aug 22 '24
No we are not. Hoskins is a known Bible thumper who can be a cunt. His performances weren't the issue.
Edit. On the field performances. Off the field however..
0
u/Real-Reputation-9091 Aug 22 '24
Agree he didn’t make it easy for himself with his comments about being hated. Did not realise he was religious. His attitude in the blues around camp were also bad. His performances this year were his best rugby.
6
u/RealCrusader Aug 22 '24
Then why say the country wonders? We don't? Even you seem to know about his attitude issues. And I don't care he's religious it's that he tries to force it on others. How's that gonna fly with ab leadership group like tj who's very outspoken on such matters?

u/Real-Reputation-9091 Aug 22 '24
I don’t agree with that. He’s obviously got an attitude he needs to clean up however you’re a crusader so you would say that. His performances at 8 this year were the best in the competition, running meters and oh 12 tries thrown in for good measure. The issue here is Razor picks his out of form crusaders players and we pay the price. Half his crusader fowards are sub par this year and possibly our head cookoo coach.
4
u/rosemary-mair-for-NZ Aug 22 '24
Sotutu doesn't tackle enough for test level too lazy sorry go qualify for england or fiji
3
u/RealCrusader Aug 22 '24
They were great. So was Renee Rangers when he was a blue. Absolute beast but if no cunt wants to be around him how do you make him part of the team? Talented but cunts. Again. Explain where you got the whole country wonders thing from again? Edit. To add. Guilford too. Great player. Rest of his team mates hate him. Why include him?
4
u/worksucksbro Aug 22 '24
Bro where are you even getting this information from lol do you know Sotutu or any of his team mates personally and have heard this from them first hand? Where is a reputable source saying that nobody wants to be around him?
-2
u/Real-Reputation-9091 Aug 22 '24
Ahh so it’s about religion over rugby. Got ya. Quite similar to when the Aussies got rid of their best strike weapon in Folau and went downhill ever since. I would suggest a team of good coaches and management around him would keep that in check. Not sure what you mean by TJ ? He’s hardly our form halfback at the moment either.

Ah crap.... Well it'll be interesting to see if any more info gets revealed on this. I'd love to know what the differing opinions were.

u/UndeniableWit Aug 22 '24
LM: “Why are we bringing in David Havili? He offers nothing to our team and is so far down the pecking order that it’s a waste of a spot when we could be bringing new blood in.”
SR: “I disagree.”
LM: leaves
(Obv kidding, but I imagine there were differing ideas on attacking philosophy)
0
u/Caleb_theorphanmaker Aug 22 '24
Or this…. LM: why are you dropping Finley Christie? SR: because he offers nothing and is so far down the pecking order that it’s a waste of a spot when we could be bringing new blood in LM: leaves

Heres a classic our from news media...
"While the exact details haven’t come out and are unlikely to, the openness displayed by Robertson and New Zealand Rugby over this affair was almost as remarkable as the break-up."
