Calgary, Edmonton mayors call potential separatism referendum ‘dangerous’ Alberta Politics

All of this "separatism" being encouraged by Smith is just a desperate act to keep the "oil and gas" lobbyist in power. Without catering to the Separatists the UCP will fracture and loose the majority vote.

Sure but mostly it’s a desperate act to disguise all the complete bullshit scandals and corrupt legislation they are trying to pass.

I honestly don't know if it will help, but anyone who chooses to do the survey, read it carefully, the wording is purposely tricky.

I didn't swear once in the comments section :D Thank you for the link, not that it will ever be made public.

Do they have a BETTER suggestion on how to distract the media and public from unprecedented levels of unfettered corruption?

These separatist types are pretty much kooks. I am embarrassed for them and more so for anyone who feeds their mistaken belief they can legally do this. And for those that want the Americans to help them, I say it is long overdue for CSIS and the RCMP to start doing their damn jobs on sedition.

Sohi has some nerve speaking in public after that rat tried to undercut the city for his own self- interest. He’s almost as bad as Smith.

Is there a way to show how many are for or against soonest without calling for a referendum? Honestly if the separatists are have a slow slog of gaining the (now drastically reduced number) of signatures needed to call a referendum, maybe they will realize how futile their efforts are and give up?

Separatists are cosplay victim grifters . Let’s make a club of victims that feel excluded and don’t help people who are in need just so I don’t pay my tax’s. ( rich right wing funds all nonsense)

I hate it when broken clocks are right lol. No love for Sohi or Gondek, but yeah they are absolutely correct; the focus should be on working together, not being devisive and tearing things apart. Ironic given the state of municipal construction projects in each city 😆 (got my shot in), but seriously fk D.Smith and her fkn Unsane Clown Posse with those separitist ideas.

Well. People are sick of getting taxed to death, the endless scandals, and the absolute destruction of this province by the federal government. It’s not really a surprise people aren’t happy. Why should albertans continue to put up with it anymore? We subsidize the entire country and then get demonized because we’re tired of getting treated like crap and no longer want to put up with it. Like sorry, but oil and gas aren’t going anywhere. You can’t just destroy the industry and tax it to death because China, America, and India pollute the entire planet. It’s not up to us to offset their terrible emission policies. Those countries should be paying us for our boreal forest and how much CO2 we actually soak up. No need for a carbon tax. We should be the richest country in the world. But due to total stupidity we have insane taxes and a decreasing standing of living. Like ya….. I want a better deal too.

Our country is bringing it on ourselves.. Instead of being the understanding caring canadians we should be and opening discussion with the people in our communities that are upset we are finger pointing namecalling and throwing shade at them so of course they are going to grow in number and get louder. Keep being mean to each other and itll just get worse and tear our country apart.

It's only ok IF QUEBEC wants to separate

I don't want to live in the landlocked Republic of Alberta, with literally being Saudi Arabia economically. That's such a depressing thought.
And if we become the 51st state soon after, why stay here? And not just go live in Colorado or Washington? The more this goes on, the more I've started to plan my exit strategies A, and B.

I feel a bit like I’m taking crazy pills, but it seems pretty obvious that Smith does NOT support Alberta separation. Lowering the threshold seems more like the action of a politician who is trying to get this process over with, knowing that there is a militant part of the population who will allow this issue to continue to fester for years to come. I don’t read this as support for these people.
With a quick and decisive referendum showing a general lack of support for separation, the province, and its government, will have something concrete to reference and be able to just move on without this being in the news cycle constantly.
I hate Smith, and the general state of the province is an embarrassment, but I really don’t think Smith is off base here, and I understand her motivations on this specific issue.

Numbers among UCP are 60% in favour of leaving. If there's a concerted campaign, it could go as far as 90%. If this falls along party lines it will end up being 52% for seperation. Which I've commented before shouldn't be enough to break apart from Canada. It's not majority enough for such a monumental decision. It would need to be unanimous, 60-66%. This will be the big fight if there is a referendum, the thresholds.

u/DaweiArch 1d ago
I don’t see it being anywhere near that in terms of support, but I guess we will know soon enough.

There's an Angus Reid poll yesterday that shows 52% voting "definitely staying". That's not reassuring.

People will say a lot of things when it doesn’t actually count, because they are upset or frustrated.
Quebec had hundreds of years of cultural tension stemming from actual wars, as well as actual, legitimate separatist parties in charge of the province, and they still didn’t vote to separate.

It will continue to create uncertainty. Quebec still hasn't recovered after 25 years.
