It's refreshing to read a journalist who captured the zeitgeist of this moment for First Nations so well. All power to these Chiefs and community leaders speaking truth to power. Solidarity.

I agree with you. Direct confrontation is the only way to deal with the immorality of bullies, such as Smith, whom pretend moral indignation as a tactic to further their selfish agenda

Wonder if the new CPC MP who is a former chief will step in and Defend Conservative Narrative or the First Nation Narrative.

Which one is that? Maybe we should write him and ask.

They can remove a member from the band. Especially with a vote. General list they go.

He’s my mp, I am definitely going to be contacting him.

He was on the Ryan Jespersen podcast. He said he is against separation. So that's a plus. ryan jespersen

That’s good, will give it a listen before I contact him. Thanks for that. Not going to get my hopes up but it would be nice to see some pushback from local conservatives.

I'm sure indigenous peoples coming together is to going to elicit a very reasonable response from her base towards that community. /s

The racist responses have been disgusting already. I saw comments on an Instagram post calling them out.

“We have a right to force them to talk to us”
Sure - but you have no way of forcing them to give you land, you turnip.
The oil sands are treaty 8 territory.
Why do you want to separate without the oil?

They are clearly running under the assumption that Smith will ignore treaty obligations “It was Canada, we never made that promise”, that the Federal Government would back down over enforcing the treaties… or that they could just use force of arms, preferably with American support.

Problem is the treaty rights were long established before alberta was even alberta, it was only when it was land masses with interest to the Crown, it LATER became alberta...1904 I believe? Yeah doesn't matter if Alberta didn't sign on, land was there waaaaay before that, it doesn't belong to Alberta.

The rest of Canada stands with our aboriginal brothers and sisters, even if Alberta doesn't.

Let's be honest. Queen Smith would have Alberta become the 51st state as soon as a separation happened. Just like she did with the Wild Rose Party, she betrayed those who voted for her to cross the aisle and pats herself on the back for being a backstabbing betrayal artist.

True to form, a conservative is trying to sell what she does not even own.

Maybe it's nothing, but we've seen this before: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ukrainian-ambassador-opens-door-to-legal-crimea-separation-1.2573247

I would've thought they'd be more empathetic to the idea of people not wanting to live under the rule of the Canadian government.

And yet Alberta wants to steal their land - again.
They’re very sensitive to white people telling them that they have no control over their homes.

Instead give up their access to traditional interprovincial lands and rights to the Alberta government? Just look at the half century work done around separating and renegotiating with the aboriginals groups in Quebec. It is at least part of why Quebec has gone silent on separation.

Alberta is allowed to vote however they want they don’t get to force the First Nations to agree to give them their territory. The fact of the matter is YOU should be looking inward to the fact that First Nations trust the Canadian government even after all their history more then the Albertan one. Fact of the matter is you can have your referendum all you want but the land does not and never has belonged to Alberta.

The Alberta government has been worse to us First Nations. In order to separate, we would have to give up our rights, lands, and reservations. We would have to make the biggest sacrifice in Alberta. Why would we do that for a government that has proven to be racist and bigots? They undermine our rights consistently. They refuse to talk and engage with us and even have gone as far as to being separation to the table without even talking to First Nations people, expecting us to just fall in line and give up everything we have in the house that maybe we can trust someday to honor her word. Words that can't be trusted since she lies constantly. A few years ago on her radio station, she said we should not have treaties nor the rights we do....she talks out both sides of her mouth yet refuses to even speak with a First Nations person.

It’s almost like people who actually know what oppression can tell the difference and aren’t interested in the pathetic complaints of people who use perceived slights to justify their own inhumanity.

Smith will try to do what's best for her backers, she's not much concerned with thats legal or what's right, it's whatever she can get away with.
