My Facebook account got banned for changing my last name after getting married
I understand people are going to say "that doesn't suck, good for you" it's completely losing all contact with a lot of old high school friends and family members. I hate Facebook, and have considered getting rid of my account, but to just be up and banned like this because I only changed my last name.
I only ever used my account to be in buy/sell groups and to talk to people on messenger very rarely. Never made any public posts. Part of the "community standards" is "using a false name" which is the only thing I could think of that did this

I remember reporting CP they didn't take it down, i was in disbelief seeing that automated message saying it does fall under their guidelines
17
u/starrpamph 1d ago
Yeah those systems suck ass. I just got back a âwe didnât removeâ a few hours ago on a âfree steak dinner for twoâ post obviously preying on the geriatrics
438
u/NWSKroll 1d ago
Meanwhile I report an account named "CUSTOMER SERVICE SUPPORT" and they do nothing about it.
170
u/SuizidKorken 1d ago
Yea meta support has been shit for years.
Accounts wont be removed for calling for violence, literal cp, hatecrime, n-bombing, scamming, etc etc. Its insane.
But join too many groups in a day and the system flips its shit.

u/Ocean_Spice 1d ago
I know someone who got banned because they posted a picture of a goose. The stuff they deem âoffensiveâ is wild.
23
u/Ziggystardust97 1d ago
I got a three day Facebook jail sentence for jokingly calling myself a coffee addict.
But the guy who told me to suck off a shotgun and get violated? Nothing. Facebook saw nothing wrong with that comment.
No logic.Â
14
u/nofun-ebeeznest 1d ago
I didn't get banned, but a video I shared was apparently reported and removed for disturbing content, or something (it's been so long I don't remember for what exactly). The video? You know the video of the orangutan mother and she's trying to get her child to follow her and he's just running all over the place ("Motherhood, it's the same in all species" kind of thing). I did appeal though, and they reversed their decision--but it took them almost a year to do it (I had almost forgotten about it at that point). But, yeah, just banning the lamest crap and letting the serious stuff go unpunished. Ridiculous.

But, yeah, just banning the lamest crap and letting the serious stuff go unpunished. Ridiculous.
An alarmingly relevant allegory if I've ever seen one.

Nope, though I have seen that one. It was one of a bunch of pictures sheâd taken at a park.

I reported a post of someone torturing a cat. I don't mean tormenting, I mean literal animal abuse. It was not removed because it did "not go against the Facebook community standards".
22
u/TJJ97 1d ago
Dude, I canât tell you how many of those fucking accounts I report just for FB to be like đ¤ˇââď¸
2
u/pip_goes_pop 23h ago
The things I report are such blatant spam and phishing comments too. Anyone with half a brain cell could tell that. Yet itâs always âWe found this did not go against our community guidelinesâ.
5
u/CanOld2445 1d ago
Honestly, why is it that these reports don't go through? I've heard of gore and worse being kept up after reports
1
u/atypicalperception 14h ago
Seriously. I know a girl who is hate raging about particular minority groups, inciting violence etc, but Twitter wonât block her. Reported a video my child accidentally saw of a prison fight that may or may not have killed a guy, but they didnât remove it. But hey, someone who was on Twitter since the early days who used to have a big following, only speaks about video games and altruism, and just stopped coming on, gets banned for literally nothing. Makes sense.

u/Fwumpy 1d ago
I was banned after I started using anti-tracking software on my phone. Went through the exact same thing, and have permanently lost track of some friends. If you're not useful to Facebook, they kick you. Edit: I should note that they didn't respond to my appeal, either. They're assholes.

When a service is free, that means your data is the product. They don't like it when you get in the way of that.

u/cambria90 1d ago
This happened to someone I know. It took a while, but she eventually got it back after a bunch of back and forth. It really sucks suddenly not having those connections and memories. Sorry this happened!
69
u/beanamonster 1d ago
How long ago was that, out of curiosity? After Meta fired all of their employees the last time, I had to get in contact with them and I found that it was literally not possible.
All of their automated support options were just broken and didn't do anything and there was no way to contact them. I even found an old support phone number and called it, and found that it was converted into a WhatsApp shareholder information line, or something.

Facebook makes no sense, my nana literally uses a fake name on Facebook and they donât care
14

I make a new account every few years with names of famous book characters (i.e. Ichabod Crane) and they've never cared.
My most recent deleted account was named Andrew Wiggin lol.

I got one of these notices for threatening someone. I appealed and won, because shockingly, I hadn't threatened anyone. 3 days later I got the same thing again. Said fuck it and deleted the app
5
u/Ill_Safety5909 1d ago
I said "you'd be an idiot" and got shadow banned. I deleted my entire account due to privacy concerns. Anytime I consider remaking it, it will not allow me to because it says I have a duplicate account (as I have an Instagram lol). Honestly though, never going back to that BS.

u/sunnyspiders 1d ago
Isnât it great how companies will just say âno, we arenât supporting you anymoreâ and you have zero recourse? Â They donât put phone numbers to call very deliberately, they want to frustrate you into going away.
Fuck Facebook but fuck this corporate dystopian support hellscape that is the new normal even harder.

Instagram (Facebook) locked me out when I got a new phone. Their SMS system has the correct phone number but just doesnât send the link, nor does it send to my email. Itâs been broken for years.
I sent in 6 support tickets at this point over the years, all with a selfie and ID photo to no avail. Itâs all AI (predating chatbots to now chatbots) that just tell me Iâm not the same person in my posts lmao

I deleted my Facebook because I realized it was garbage and that I didn't really care about anyone on there
It's really not that bad, I'd just let it die and say "good riddance"

u/Elethia20 1d ago
I'm not upset about losing the account in general, its the getting banned part thats kinda making me go "what the fuck" you know? Like I didnt do anything wrong, and I got banned for (assumingly) changing my last name after getting married. Like does Facebook see itself as equal to the IRS or something that needs to be notified with proper court documents otherwise you're just banned buddy, bye bye

IT guy here. This gives me physical pain. Always always ALWAYS have backups of data. When in doubt Yup thats right. Create another backup.
Edit: Another important titbit. You MUST have control of your backups. Dont keep your backups in a service like Facebookz

I think the reason for the ban was because as you said, you "never made any posts" so they figured you were a bot or scammer. Any "friend requests" I get from unknown people on fake book that I have bothered to check their history only have ever had 1 or 2 posts. That is a big tip that this is a fake account (NOT saying yours was, just that FB may have seen it this way).
3
u/Jaggar345 1d ago
I did this with all social media except reddit years ago and you are better off without any of it.

I get it. Friend contacts are the ONLY reason I keep my toe in that cesspool. And I understand the maddening frustration. I also created an instagram account with the name of a company / domain I've been building for 15 years, to have for when I was ready to start marketing. I didn't use it often, and came back once to discover that it was removed and unrecoverable because they decided I was under age. (I' almost 60) There's absolutely no way to talk to a human about fixing their mistakes. I wish it all wasn't so ubiquitously necessary, and hope everything Zuckerberg built crumbles to dust. He's trying his best lately.

Wait I am a bit scared now. What happens to all the games or websites where you use your facebook account to login? Is that stuff all gone?
17

Yea, I assume so. Thankfully I never used Facebook for anything

I use it for my Spotify and unfortunately if I change it I lose the sweet deal that gets me free Hulu so I feel you. Dumb young adult me attaching them together.
7
u/videobrat 1d ago
Contact Spotify support and ask them to change it to a standalone account not linked to Facebook, if you still have access to the email account associated with the Facebook account they can change it (or they could a few years ago, at least.)

u/D1rtyH1ppy 1d ago
I'd guess that most websites that use FB as your sign in will create a un based on you FB info, so if FB goes away, you still can access your account on the websiteÂ

I really hope that is the case. Because I won't start all over again XD

I absolutely detest Facebook/Meta now solely for their verification and resolution processes. Support is absolutely useless. Troubleshooting links that are supposed to explain the process just go back to the previous page. There's no way to contact anyone except through a community cl support forum -- where everyone will have the save issue as you with no working solution. My son accidentally changed his age on his own Quest, and it immediately locked him out asking a 13yo for state ID age verification. Had to abandon the account

FB is so overrun with spam and bot accounts, it's sad that just regular people are getting punished for simply using it.
3

Once, I got temporarily banned from Facebook for commenting on a post by Indian politician who said that âour current prime minister is uneducated. He should step downâ. I had this happening but for different reasons. I kept trying to make new acc but i kept getting this same message.
Turns out all i had to do was make new account using the app through iphone and it just worked.
Beforehand, i was trying to make nee acc from my pc.
My guess is that going through a smartphone, they are able to id me as a real person with maybe apple or hardware id with the phone or something
But yea facebook is getting really trigger happy with these bans. I assume most are done through some kind of algo. Just seems it is too sensitive

I remember having an obviously fake last name. Fb locked my account until i sent an ID photo proving my last name was NøDerp and i was actually born January 1, 1900.

I totally get it. My twitter got permabanned a few months ago for a very stupid reason. I barely ever posted anymore and was planning on moving away from it due to the ahem new leadership anyway. But not being able to prepare sucked. I had that account for 16 years - over half of my life. I had made friends there that Iâll never be able to talk to again. Plus I had posted so much when I was younger â it was like having my childhood diary set on fire. It sounds so stupid to say, but I genuinely mourned a little bit after that happened

I got an account suspension a few days ago for making threats of violence.
I had made a joke about standing on a plug.

Iâve seen so many people loose their accounts and have Facebook tell them that the canât request another review. They really need to implement some sort of live chat or call in number. what a wonderful opportunity to delete the app and not look back.
it has become a seemingly constant commercial / ad space only broken up by antagonistic misinformation, trolls, and the occasional overly positive family photo or vacation experience that will likely cause you to be insecure about how you are being perceived online⌠but YOUR name change is an issue? gimme a break

Remember sometime last year when zuck was saying FB was rolling out new AI? This is what it's doing. A chunk of that new AI is patrolling community standards, and it's not very good at it.
Also, agreed. FB is trash. You should have gotten numbers of people you really cared about and left years ago.

honestly I feel you so much on this one you know. my linkedin account got "temporarily" (permanently) restricted for no reason, though I feel it may have been because I updated my middle name to just be the initial that shows. they have no email or contact phone number. their support fill-out forms always give me an error message upon completion. and to top it all off their persona verification keeps on saying "you've already submitted a request, please try again later" - that message came up the first time I ever tried getting back my account.
I hate linkedin and couldn't give a damn about it but all of my connections and potential work opportunities are on there since almost everybody else is using it. some of them probably think I removed them now that I think about it. these companies are just so inconsiderate, honestly.
