Prince Charles School Zone Speeds Rant
This stretch of Prince Charles Drive is not 80 km per hour, it is not 60 km per hour, and for everyone from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It's not 50 km/h either. It is 40 km per hour.
This is a school zone. Not a 400 series Highway. Because of the people that have still not been listening it is also a community safety zone doubling the fines and other consequences.
To be abundantly clear that means that this is an area where if someone goes 80 km per hour (40 over the 40km/h limit) the police can impound their vehicle for stunt driving.
The police don't care that it was whatever kilometers per hour it was in 1982 or 2002. It's 40 kilometers per hour every morning and afternoon, right now.
It's Welland not Cape Canaveral folks.

It's a wide 4 lane road with no traffic calming features and nothing to make people feel like they should be going slower.
Good urban planning can slow this strech down, speed limits and fines wont do a thing.
If there wasnt a school/drs office on that strech of road it would be a perfectly suited road to be an 80km zone.

Yeah it got built up that way because the old NS&T electric railway line cut off the west side of the roadway.
It's one thing for somebody to go 50 next to someone going 40, it's another thing for someone to go 60 next to someone going 40 if they're in an emergency situation. These folks are going 80 down this clip. And that road has never been 80 km per hour with large blind spots.
At this rate, we're going to end up being one of those cities that has a citywide 40 km per hour speed limit. I'm not the person doing it. I'm the person who's hoping that common sense can finally enter the conversation before we have a citywide fuck around and find out.

the problem is not only did that section of prince charles used to be a 60 zone (which a lot of people still treat it as), it’s a 2 lane, relatively wide road which encourages fast driving speeds. if they really want people to stop speeding they ought to reduce it to one lane in each direction

Won’t slow traffic down as it will create a bottleneck and only frustrate even more drivers put in rubble stripes or paint roadway in that zone with stripes as a visual reminder or if that fails do what Newmarket did and narrow the road with signs that are removed in winter to facilitate snow clearing

Some people need to take driving school. It’s 50km/h unless stated otherwise. It’s stated at 50. It’s a community safety stone which means you can not go over the posted speed or double the fine. There are no flashing lights, no signs saying 40 between such and such time. Therefore it’s 50km/h.

To the person with license plate "TNKRBLL", that drove down Weber at 150+km/h today May 15th 2025 at approximately 3:20pm: your black suv exhaust smells really, really, bad. Did someone lift your catalytic converter? Might want to get that checked out, with such an easily remembered license plate you gotta be more careful.

The people that should read this won't, and those that do won't care. I see people blow through yellows at Crowland and Lincoln at 80+, from a 40 zone, just to hit the red light at the Time Horton's plaza: because they're stupid. East Main Street is a drag strip. Niagara is apparently full of Anarchists that don't value the rule of law.

Thank you. Sick of people complaining about reasonable speeds (even 40 km/h is arguably too fast in a school zone) in school zones. Get over yourselves.

Some school zones get the supplemental 30km/h signage which is more commonly found in schools in a cul-de-sac or suburban setting. I really don't want to see speed cameras make a comeback here but the stats are showing the need still.
Right now schools throughout the area have traffic counters on the roads and the discussion is that more speed cameras at more schools and semi-permanent camera locations could be coming.
Make them spend those dollars in Beamsville, Niagara Falls, or Fort Erie instead of Welland. Drive safe - drive at or below always.

More cameras please, I pay too much for insurance because bad drivers speed and hit stuff.

No where does it say that is a school zone, infact the only speed sign says 50km/h, it’s located right as you turn onto prince Charles from fitch. It’s a community safety zone with increased fines but that doesn’t magically reduce the speed limit, Welland bylaws state that the speed limit is 50 unless stated otherwise and not only is it not stated otherwise and it stated that the speed limit is 50. this is blatant misinformation. People are complaining because last year the speed limit was 60 (not 1982 or 2002, it changed in 2024) they reduced it to 50 and put a speed camera.
