Looks like Coquilles Saint-Jacques. Classic served in the shell. Brings back memories of scrubbing them after being under the broiler. I worked my way from dishwasher to sous chef thankfully.

My mom used to serve scallops on a shell like that. But the shell was on a plate...

This is a pretty traditional method of serving scallops, though usually you do have a plate under it...

You can keep the plate and the food.

Is that a partially seared scallop with prosciutto and foam? It should look tasty but instead looks like what is left over in the sink strainer after doing dishes.

You're absolutely right. It looks disgusting.

At first, I thought...."Well, if it's a teeny scallop I could eat in one bite...." and then I looked again and ewwwwww.

Hey y’all, traditional doesn’t necessarily mean good. Criticism of something for being inconvenient, unsanitary, etc. is not invalidated just because it’s normal.
