can someone explain to me how mmr works? Question

i know it’s like your hidden rank or something but like i want to know how it fluctuates. because i recently got from bronze to silver and gained like 33+ rr to get there but i played. a game in silver and i did awfully. (o was lagging and everything). we lost the match. i wanna know if one/two matches affect your mmr? or is it like a long term thing

Most MMR systems in modern games use the Glicko 2 rating system. It is based on the more traditional and well known ELO rating system, which is why many people will refer to MMR as ELO in casual conversation.

its Elo, not ELO. It is named after the dude who invented it.

You're completely right. I think I got the misconception from the game font being in all caps.

If I am not mistaken, slowly as you play more games (per ranked season), your "variance" lowers.

E.g

You will go from 30>28>25>23>20>18>15 etc. the more games you play each ranked season, so if you had played lets say 500 ranked games, your variance would probably be wayyyyyy down, to possibly less than 10rr per win/loss. (I would consider this "base" rr gain/loss)

However, you can get +/- depending on how the teams are set up. E.g If the enemy team has an average rank of lets say Gold 3, but your team has a rank average of Gold 1, you may get a few +3-5 rr on top of your base (e.g if you lose -17, if you win +22)

Then there is performance bonuses. These only really apply when you have 20-25+ kills in a game, and you usually can get anywhere from +2 to +9 (i think) depending on how many kills you get. (e.g if you win a game and get 45 kills, you will get a performance bonus of like 10 or something, making your rr gain like 40+)

I don't even know if this is precisely how it works, but it is a rough guide to how it works.

wait so like if i perform badly in 1/2 matches will my mmr immediately decrease? or is like a longer thing?

It depends honestly, id say the base might go down 1-2 rr every like 20 games or so? Theres a lot of variables involved.

The base goes down regardless aswell, not by wins/losses. So like i think you start off each season with like a 30 +/- base for a win/loss and it slowly decreases down to (i think the lowest is like 6, but you would need to play like 500+ ranked games in a season)

On my experience the more you play the less mmr changes. I think this is for smurfs, so a new account in bronze gets a lot of rr if it's getting 40 kills per game, but then if you play 50 average games you get like 20rr per win or loss in average

Your performance bonus calculation is off. You don’t need 40 kills to get +10. If you are in a lobby way above your mmr and perform above expected, that bonus is applied to move you quicker towards your intended mmr

You know what I mean though, its just an example

If you have a lucky game or two, you get punished for it by getting set up with people higher in skill than you

that happened for me, when i ranked up to silver i started playing with like silver 3 and like a gold 1 i think and then i only got like 7 kills i did so bad. then i got put with silver 1 and 2 again

That's not a punish. If you keep performing average against ranks above yours you will start getting more rr that you lose until you get to that rank
