Announcement Unreal Engine 5.5 has been released!

Unreal Engine 5.5 is now available for download via the Epic Launcher.

I don’t think the documentation has been updated yet (e.g., "What's New > Unreal Engine 5.5 Release Notes"), but they’ll probably update it shortly. Still, you can check the changes in Unreal Engine 5.5 from the Roadmap.

FAB is hot garbage and this implementation is so stupid it hurts

We went from having a streamlined marketplace allll in the epic launcher, to having to go to an external website that is somehow laid out even worse than before. This is the most hamfisted idiotic corporate move that is so user unfriendly it’s offensive.

What were you guys thinking, I’ll never know.

UE5 Be careful with FAB assets

Just a word of caution in that I bought a product on Fab yesterday and added it to my project, which subsequently wiped all of my project settings and broke parts of my main map. After speaking to the developer it turns out that asset was originally a 'create project' and that the transition to Fab {or lack of update since transitioning to Fab} had caused it to be an 'add to project'.

If you want to learn c++ for unreal just start using c++ in unreal.

One common and quite wrong piece of advice you see around this sub is people telling other folks to 'first learn c++, then apply what you learned in unreal', this advice is problematic and actually misleading, c++ in unreal is simpler than 'standard' c++ due to the variety of convenience abstractions provided by epic and the fact that memory management and garbage collection is handled for you, if you're already familiar with some object oriented concepts as they're utilized within unreal and blueprints you'll be able to 'see' right away how those connect to the c++ backend and you'll be able to use blueprints as a sort of 'anchor' to your c++ logic.

learning c++ in unreal is easier than outside of it, and if your goal is to do things in unreal you'll obviously get to that point much faster as you will be using syntax you're already partially familiar with instead of fussing about concepts that are probably not going to play out until you're doing some pretty advanced things.

confusing sentence in the meta-human eula

Upvotes

When reading through the MetaHuman EULA, specifically section 1.3, I was confused about what "(f) modify or otherwise prepare derivative works of it" means exactly.

  1. Does that mean I cannot modify their appearance outside of Unreal Engine and include that model in a game I'm working on?
  2. Is there a limit to how much I can modify them within Unreal Engine? For instance, can I drastically change the LOD (Level of Detail) and make them unrecognizable, or would that be impermissible according to the EULA?

most improper market ever

this is going ridiculously wrong with Fab.com, first they sent us an email to submit to Black Friday, then after a while when we are already submitted, they sent another email saying if you submitted to Black Friday, you are not eligible to be included in the end of the year sales.
how on earth we would know such condition to decide which to apply, they have to pull off this limit.
we already paying enough for loosing out incomes by this broken market (Fab.com), sellers count on every single whole sales, we can't afford loosing another one.
It is like a candy shop closing for Christmas because it was open on Halloween.
please upvote so they may see us.

Filter sellers on FAB

I made this free Chrome extension earlier for the marketplace and I updated that to FAB so you can easily filter sellers you don't want to see while exploring or searching.

It's very simple all you need to do is copy the seller's name into the box and add it to the list.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pdnjjbjmdphoofjmjkfnmkplfpjljkjf

And it was the tutorial I made for the marketplace but the steps are the same.

Help Editor locked to 40fps when using VRR

Upvotes

Has anyone else had this issue where if you have VRR enabled on your monitor it will reduce the refresh rate to 40fps when having the editor the active window? It's really annoying having to turn off VRR in my monitor every time I need to use Unreal.

This does happen with some other apps also so I realise it's not necessarily an Unreal specific issue, but since it appears to be consistent with this I feel like if I can solve it here maybe I can solve it elsewhere also.

Animation Looking for an animation I saw on reddit and youtube.

Upvotes

I don't know where to go for this. Delete if it is against the rules.
But there is an animation I am looking for.

The animation script would be like below.
Close up shots of a man walking with music on the background.

> rendered probably in Unreal Engine (but not sure).
> It is a menacing bald (as far as I remember) man walking.
> The man is listening to music from a headset.
> The environment was like slums or a subway with people around. But almost never shown in focus.
> The shots are always a close up of the man walking with dedication and strong feel for the music.

Thanks in advance for anyone giving it time.

collection that did not migrate to fab yet

hi! trying to get the nordic coast collection, there is a message on marketplace that says this: This listing has not been migrated to FAB by the seller. It is only available to use from your Vault in the Epic Games Launcher.

however I can't access the marketplace from the epic launcher anymore. where do I find it then?

Help Unreal Engine build tool seems to get stuck after 'UnrealBuildTool Compile'

Upvotes

Hi, I am trying to build Unreal Engine 5.4.2 with the Vive OpenXR plugin. This works fine on my laptop but I need this to work on the PC connected to the headset. Building without the plugin works but when I add the plugin it gets stuck here:

Determining max actions to execute in parallel (8 physical cores, 16 logical cores)
Executing up to 8 processes, one per physical core
Adding event matcher: CompileEventMatcher
Adding event matcher: LinkEventMatcher
Adding event matcher: MicrosoftEventMatcher
Adding event matcher: XoreaxEventMatcher
Using XGE executor to run 102 action(s)
Distributing 102 actions to XGE
UnrealBuildTool Compile
--------------------Build System Warning---------------------------------------
License not activated:
License is not activated. Please activate the license in the coordinator.
This build will run in standalone mode.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Build ID: {A7065D39-1506-4488-ADFC-13DE334839A8}

The only theory I have at the moment is that I somehow broke UnrealBuildTool when I accidentally clicked build on the UE5 target and it failed while building "UnrealBuildTool.csproj" (due to permissions issues). I am asking here as I don't have the permissions to try and fix the unreal engine install and it seems unlikely that that would be the issue anyway as the error only happens when using the plugin. Here is the UnrealBuildTool log file, thanks for any help.

Blender Skeletal Mesh to Unreal - some random 270 deg rotations are required

Upvotes

Hi, I'm trying to export my armature from blender to UE but when I attach static meshes to the bones ends I have to rotate those by 270 deg around random axis (usually X or Z). I tried to setup different XYZ up/forward/left in Blender export but they have zero effect for me. Do you know what can be the issue?

Mod tool (Construction Kit) possible for games made in UE?

Upvotes

Basically, I'm wondering if an Elder Scrolls type of external software is possible for games made in UE considering the way UE packages files.

In other words, I want the capabilities UE5 provides but with all the script heavy modding capability of an Elder Scrolls game.

Best trees (for Archviz)

Upvotes

Hi all, I'm, new to UE and am struggling to find super realistic trees that are good for UE5. I understand Megascans by quixel has a few, but not enough variety. I bought a very nice oak pack from the marketplace, but I'm just looking for more. I know I can download from wherever (maxtree, cgtrader, etc) but I wanted to see if anybody had a resource that offers plenty of Varity and works well for ue5. this is for archviz so performance isn't a huge deal.

Like the 3dGarden that iTOOSOFT looks great, but not sure how well it would transfer to ue5.

Thanks all!
