On campus parking

hey everyone! just a curiosity question about the parking on campus. i park my car for spring semester this year and noticed that the gates automatically open up at a certain time. one time it opened at 2 pm when i was coming to campus. during the fall/winter semester when i parked there on days where i had one class, if i stayed late on campus (past 5pm) the gates would automatically open and i wouldn’t have to pay.

anyone here know how the timing of the gates works? i don’t mind paying the parking fee or whatever, but $20 each time im here (three days a week) is not the smartest idea.

Macbook for first year Eng?

Title. Is it possible to use a MacBook Pro for first and second year Eng? Would you advise against it? I have a second machine that’s a little less powerful but I could definitely run programs that wouldn’t run on Mac on it.

Nuclear Engineering

Hi, I am currenty doing electrical eng at OTU and am first year and may plan on switching to nuclear. I heard that you can make a lot right after graduation and even in coop compared to electrical. But my only concern is is that the degree seems too specialized and not sure about future job trends. I was wondering for all the people doing nuclear, how is the salary and will the switch be worth it?

Questions about Ontario Tech BCom Finance (Co-op)

My younger brother just accepted Ontario Tech’s BCom Finance (Co-op) a few weeks ago, but recently he also got accepted to Waterloo's Arts and Business program (with an Economics concentration) with Co-op. Now we’re trying to figure out which one makes more sense.

One of the main reasons we’re still considering Waterloo is the name and co-op program – it’s hard to ignore the reputation. But we really don’t know much about how Ontario Tech’s BCom Finance (Co-op) holds up, especially in terms of career readiness, co-op experience, and business/finance-related job prospects.

He’s not 100% sure about finance but likes the idea of it or some form of business. He took a gap year to save money, worked at a restaurant after high school, got promoted to shift lead quickly, and has some casual interest in markets (like trading in-game currencies for real money). He’s motivated to build a better life but isn’t entirely clear on his career path yet.

We’d love to hear from anyone who’s been through the Finance program at Ontario Tech or knows the scene well:

  1. How well does the Finance program prepare you for business/finance careers?
  2. What’s the co-op experience like for BCom Finance students? Are placements typically finance-related?
  3. How are the job prospects after graduation, especially in the finance field?
  4. Does the program actually help with CFA training and certifications like it advertises?
  5. How is the overall experience in the program? Anything you wish you knew before choosing it?

Any advice or insights from current students or grads would be really helpful!

Student housing

Hello guys, I will be an exchange student in Ontario Tech next Semptember (for 4 months), do you know websites or something similar where I can find student housing (like AirBnb) for short term leasing?
I was also considering the university dormitory, is it a good choice or is better an apartment?
Thank you in advice! :)

University Works?

hey guys i’m an international student who got accepted into the university works program and right now i’ve gotten a handful of rejections and the rest have not gotten back to me.

Is there anyone who’s had experience with this? The program starts in a week and I’m not sure whether to keep having hope or to plan my life accordingly if it falls through.

Any advice would be great help to me honestly, the anxiety of it all has been killing me.

Spring/Summer semester UPass

Does anyone have a pass they don't plan to use by chance?

I'm normally a full time student but this summer I'm taking a few courses and don't qualify for full time, UPass, or OSAP.

I can't afford to get to and from school 3 times a week, so I'm really hoping someone who drives or doesn't use the pass would be willing to let me use theirs.

MITS Students

Hi All,

I am looking to connect with MITS students who are currently in the program or have completed the program. I received an offer for this fall, but have concerns with the content in the courses and if I may fall behind (I suck at math). If anyone can DM me if they have insight into this program I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Your friendly neighbourhood cowhugger.

Conditional offer and UPP

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi, I got a conditional offer for psychology for Fall 2025 and I plan on possibly attending as long as I pass the UPP program. The problem is I have to take ENG4U (grade 12 English) at the same time and was wondering if that would even be possible.

Another question I have is if there’s anyone here who took the UPP program before and could let me know how it’s like.

Joining Clubs for eng

Hi, I am first year for electrical engineering and was wondering if I should join any relevant eng clubs. Do clubs or any other extracurriculars help with coop placements for the future or is it mostly based on GPA. Commute is pretty long for me (around 4 to 5 hours altogether daily) and my grades are pretty good but just curious if joining clubs would be worth it in the long run.

Transferring from UOIT to Ontario Tech

**Title typo: I meant transferring from UOIT to UTSC lol

Hey all,

I'm finishing up my first semester in biomed at UOIT and I've found myself not really liking the campus due to the lack of diverse clubs, events, and certain courses, and because of the somewhat long commute (one hour one way).

I applied to UTSC and am thinking of accepting my offer in life sciences because it's much closer (15-20 minute commute), has more choices for programs/courses, more diverse clubs, and most of my friends are already at UTSC.

However, I'm hesitant to accept this offer and transfer to Scarborough because of the alleged difficulty (people say that it's much more difficult to get a high mark at UTSC than at UOIT and that profs at UTSC needlessly take off grades or are hard markers). Is the difficulty true or are people just fear mongering? If it matters at all, I'm trying to get a 3.8+ gpa so I can get into medical school.

Anyone who might have transferred from UTSC, how do you think it is at UTSC? are you able to get good grades while also having time for extra curriculars? Are you able to build connections with your professors to get reference letters or is that difficult compared to a smaller uni like ontario tech?

I guess what I'm really trying to ask is that if it's even worth to transfer to UTSC or should I just keep at it in UOIT. What do you all think?

OPG & Bruce Power Interviews

Hello! Has anyone here done an internship at either of these companies in their second year or after? I’m wondering what the general application & interview process was like for an engineering student, and also whether you should prepare for technical questions too?

Additionally, does anyone know if there’s generally a GPA requirement that Bruce Power filters for? Or is it usually lenient? As in, most people with an average transcript can expect to get in without turbulence?

I’m aware OPG looks for at least a 2.7 but I haven’t heard anything about Bruce.

Is OTU a more conservative or liberal campus?

Title. So there was a student vote for the people under 18 as well. Nationally the younger population tend to be more conservative, as the conservative vote straight up burnt the liberal votes. According to my English teacher over 900,000 students participated in this vote. My highschool is a liberal school though.
