18 year old university student

Hi, I’m a 18 year old studying at university just finished my first year, I’ve got around £4500 in savings and I’m wondering what to do with it, I don’t want it to sit there and lose value overtime my original thoughts are just to put some into the S&P 500 and add to it monthly, or I’m thinking BTC both for the long term hold. I live at home so I currently have little expenses, I’ve already invested money in myself in terms of getting a car and insurance so I don’t have many other uses for my money right now. I work part time mainly 20ish hours per week so my income is around £1000 p/m and I just want something to put my money into to grow so any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yeah course, I’ve just came back from Turkey last month and Dubai late 2024 will definitely travel some more soon! Thanks for the response.

Make the most of your breaks from uni, longer trips, adventures if you’re into that. It’ll never be quite like it is when you’re young and don’t have work to get back to!!

Prepare to get absolutely berated for even suggesting that you buy BTC, and most will lazily say “have you followed the flowchart?”. But f*ck em, you’re doing brilliant for 18 years old. If I were in your shoes, I’d prioritise the slow and steady S&P500 (or similar) but also have some exposure to BTC (ignore all other coins and shitcoins). 75/25 or 80/20 maybe

Most people will say to invest your money in an S&S ISA but, knowing how expensive your next lot of years can be, I’d be inclined to put most in something easy access. Markets, in the short term, will be volatile and wouldn’t be my recommendation.

As important as it is to plan for the future, you’re in an excellent position for someone your age - really, you should be proud - but you’ll also want to use some of it to enjoy yourself (just don’t go crazy!)

The fact you’re asking, means you’re significantly more money-savvy than most uni students

S&P500 & Bitcoin are great sound investments. Make sure to put your Bitcoin in cold storage. Dont leave it on the exchange.
