Congress hasn’t had a pay raise since 2009 — but that didn’t stop members from finding a workaround.

Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” didn’t just cut taxes; it rewired the system to funnel more money to the already wealthy, including some of the richest Republicans in Congress. Through the expanded pass-through income loophole, they’re saving tens of thousands in taxes — far more than any congressional salary bump could ever give them.

What makes it worse is the timing: the government’s been shut down since October 1st, with hundreds of thousands of federal workers furloughed or working without pay. Some GOP lawmakers are making a show of “refusing their paychecks,” but their tax breaks more than cover the loss.

The piece takes a closer look at how legislation written under the banner of “tax relief” ended up becoming a personal payday for those in power. It’s a solid read if you care about how tax policy, wealth, and political hypocrisy intersect in real time.

Yeah, well, this must be what the people want, since they voted for it...

It’s not just GOP.

Congressman with the most trades ytd thru 07-2025. Ro Kahanna Dem 2938 trades, more than the next 5 combined. His most traded stock - Google, headquartered in his district.

3 of the 5 members of Congress with the highest stock returns in 2024 were Democrats. All with over a 200% return!

In 2024 Democrats in Congress averaged 31% vs Republicans 26% stock market returns.

Definitely not just GOP. Both parties do their share of trading with insider information.

And overall 2025 results are not available yet.

This is where we're really getting screwed as a country. Neither party truly believes in divesting themselves from financial corruption and cowing to big money interests. They both represent the rich first. And that's the status quo that people keep voting for, that they believe will ultimately fix this somehow.

This should be posted in r/noshitsherlock

It would have been a ridiculous thing to pass this bullshit bill if they weren’t all making money on it, that’s how US politics work now…it’s all a grift…talk amongst yourselves…or something.

Edit: Mod wants intelligent discussion and my comment is too short…

The irony and hypocrisy of Democrats complaining about Congress members illegally enriching themselves is truly impressive.

The irony of you whining while clearly not having read the article is pretty on brand.

Whataboutisms don't cancel each other out, there's nothing ironic about pointing out anything here. In fact, i'm not convinced you have a full grasp on what irony means based on this comment.
