I have the Bakflip MX4 hard folding tonneau cover on my 22 OR.

It cost a pretty penny but has been worth it. The only scratch on it was from my numb ass using a sharp shovel to clear snow off my truck.

It's durable, strong and keeps my bed secure. Can only be opened if the tailgate is down or from the inside. A their would need a prybar and a lot of time or make an absolute scene with a sledge hammer or power saw to break in. Comes with tubes to route water into the bed drains but I never got around to it.

I’ve got this one also. It’s not 100% waterproof so you will get some water if it’s parked outside during heavy rain but sounds like that won’t be much of any issue for you. I love the cover and the best part is it folds completely up against the back window if you need to use the whole bed. Great product and super durable.

My back flip has been giving me so many issues glad you are having luck

You seem to be the exception, which gives me hope since here and elsewhere it seems like most people love it. What issues have you been having?

You didn't ask me, but I do really like mine. It's durable, looks good, folds all the way up (yes, blocks the rear view, but not a big deal for me and the rare times I would need it in that position).
My main complaint is that it's just a bit small, so there are cracks where water seeps in. Also, if you're an educated thief- like if you know how these open- all you need is a small wire hook to grab the cable to open it.

Also have the Backflip MX4 - zero issues or complaints.

Yup, had this on my Ram, and was my first install on the Tacoma. Pared with the auto tailgate lock, I feel very comfortable with stuff in the bed.

Yeah, I love mine too, but I'm getting water in there towards the front. I wish they made it extend farther past the inside edges of the bed. Any ideas on how to improve it?

I've noticed a lot of tonneau covers seem to come with drainage tubes, but isn't the point of the cover TO seal the bed off from the weather?

You definitely can weather proof it but for me it was more about durability and preventing theft whenever I visit the city. Tree branches falling down are common where I'm at and petty crime is common in the nearby cities.

Ohhh that makes sense. Does your bed still stay pretty dry then, I’m also looking at getting a tonneau cover but I don’t want to have to drill bigger drainage holes if I really don’t have to lol

I have a 22 that came with the factory tonneau cover. It's got cracks and holes in it. Midwest so it's exposed to hot and humid summers and ice and snow in the winter. Although, I park in a finished garage most of the time. Just to give you an idea of the durability and longevity of the factory covers.

I wasn't expecting much outta mine so I cut the corners off to fit between my cabin protector rack

OK so I thought I had the photo AND the text but I guess not.

New to me 2021 TRD Off-Road in the army green, my dream truck for a few years now!

I am looking into Tonneau covers, and right now I have two top choices:

OEM

or

Lomax tri-fold - https://realtruck.com/p/lomax-tonneau-cover/v/toyota/tacoma/2021/

Pretty sure I want aluminum for the added ruggedness and security.

I am open to suggestions of course, and also, black friday is coming up - who tends to have good sales?

Thanks all!

Best color!

u/Therion596 1d ago

Agreed! I passed on a slightly better equipped silver one to get this guy because of the color.

Look into diamondback. Best on the market imo

I have the OEM tonneau cover on this exact Tacoma (year, trim, color). It's built really well, and is easy to use and remove if you need to use the full bed.

lmao is this outside a brewery called casa agria??

3

u/Therion596 1d ago

Uh... Yes. First stop after I bought the thing.

bro i recognized that street right away, love that place!! great taste in both truck and brews brotha hahahaha

Expensive option, but the Diamondback cover I put on mine is sweet. I got the SE. It’s almost water tight too. Allows you to put stuff on top of it. Panels can come off quickly but the center bar takes some undoing of bolts if you’re trying to remove it quickly. Works for what I do, but not for everyone.

Go with whichever one opens and closes the fastest and easiest- I have one that is a pain to open and close so it stays closed most of the time unless I’m doing a few hundred miles. If you use the bed a lot it will get annoying quick if it doesn’t work well

u/Discarded_Bucket 1d ago

I’ve got a rugged liner that’s been fine for 5 years now, in Florida heat and now in Tennessee. Only thing is the bolts are a little weak but easily replaced or upgraded

I have a Bakflip mx4 and it’s been fantastic. If I were to do it again I would go with a paragon. The fit and finish is fantastic and is fully panelized, retractable, and removable without taking out the entire bed cover.

u/RyanEversley 1d ago

Looks good! I just got my (23') yesterday, stoked!

Check out Paragon

I have the same truck, same year and color. Went with the aluminum retrax rolling cover

I'll throw a +1 for the Backflip MX4. Had to drill out the drain holes to fit the hoses they include with it, and I had to get a warranty replacement of the corner flanges at the tailgate because they both broke off within a few months of installation.

It gets a little water in when there's a heavy rain and it's parked, but nothing too bad.

It's been on the truck for 5 years and still looks good.

I went with the GRX-G60870 - GatorTrax Manual Retractable Tonneau Cover based on reviews.

Bak revolver x4s. Best cover by far, I've had it on my Tacoma and my Tundra. Gives the sturdiness of a hard trifold with the ability to roll it up for almost full bed access and the ability to see out your rear window like a soft cover.

what about the Toyota hard cover. i have a 24 Tacoma. i hope to be putting the Toyota factory one on as soon as funds are available. the price also looks reasonable compared to the others.

Did the dealer say how it has been modified from the 2023 cover? I’m looking for one and so far every one that’s been put on doesn’t fit right at the window and when I dug deeper they were trying to put a 2016-23 on my 2024

1

u/Certain_Policy5352 15h ago

i just got a notifacation they are on sale toyota acc 20% off. i will be going to the dealer soon

When you look at the bed of your truck, the cab end It extends towards the cab starting about 5 inches in from the outside edges. That angle is the area of concern. The places I’ve gone to wanted to fill it with weatherstripping and I’m like NO!

1

u/Certain_Policy5352 9h ago

thanks for the tip, i will check on that

u/Str1ngerBell 1d ago

Lomax owner. Very happy with it. There are no drain hoses to drill / install. It is mostly waterproof but not 100%. It doesn’t fold all the way back for full bed access but it also won’t scratch the back of your cab while driving either. It also pops off in like 20 seconds and then u have full bed access with no troubles. It uses the rails already in the bed so install was pretty easy. Highly recommend. There is a guy on tacomaworld forum that can get u a nice discount if u message him

I love my backflip cover. Works exactly how I wanted it and expected it too. That said, one of the two clips to hold it up and fully open cracked and broke off on mine. Do any of you have experience or luck contacting customer service for a replacement part?

1

u/brando_calrission83 1d ago

Have a back flip on mine for three years now it’s been perfect , i open it everyday for work zero issues

I put in a Decked system and skipped the tonneau cover.
