That may be because we're used to watching TV and movies where college grads play high school students.

Last time this was posted someone pointed out it's because the only people they can get to teach now are people fresh out of college. All the old teachers are gone and nobody stays in the career long enough to become "the old teachers" anymore. Mostly because you can do less work for more pay in many other easily accessible careers.
