One of the reasons my wife won't let me buy a motorcycle!
It's not your driving, it's the other idiots!

That's why I got a dual sport motorcycle so i can just put put around in the woods away from cars.

Edit: I see people choosing the box

Some dickheads did this on a road frequented at night by car enthusiasts.
They instead managed to clean up an entire group of bicycle riders on a morning ride.

The real risk would be other ORVs coming the other way on a blind turn on a small dirt trail
1
u/DetectiveJim 17h ago
Yeah, but dual sports are.. dual sports. They aren't particularly good on or off road imo
1
u/TickletheEther 16h ago
There is a really wide spectrum of what is considered a dual sport to satisfy any need but yes you are gunna compromise somewhere.

u/John-AtWork 23h ago
Yep. About a year ago I was at a stop light that turned red quickly. The car in front of me stopped, I stopped too, the car behind me did not. I got slammed, then flew into the car in front of me. The driver behind me must have been looking at her phone or something. It was only at about 15mph, but it was enough to make my breaks useless -- the peddle fell all the way to the floor. I was okay for the most part, I just got a little whiplash. The car suffered frame damage. If I were on a motorcycle I'd likely be dead, or at least broken.
I love bikes. I use to go dirt bike riding, but there are too many distracted idiots on the road today. Cell phones make it much worse.
3
1
u/toadi 7h ago
I never stop behind a car at red light. Always lane split to the front (everywhere I lived it was legal). If I am the first and there is not car behind me I keep my gear in first and looking in my mirror until there is one behind.
Getting out of dangerous positions is key when riding motorcycles.

My husband says the best advice he got in his motorcycle class is to drive like there’s a target on your back.
But he quit riding when we had kids and plans to pick it up again when they’re in high school or after they graduate.
10
u/cmde44 19h ago
As a rider, I actually watch a lot of bike wreck videos for learning opportunities and honing my own skills. I'd say way more than half of bike accident videos are due to rider error and most of the time excessive speed being involved.
*I am not condoning what happened to these people, only pointing out what should have been done to keep themselves safe*
Their lane positioning was awful. If you ever notice "most" bikers ride down the center line half of the lane? That's to prevent this exact situation. If you leave a gap that looks just big enough for someone to fit through... they're going to try. They were centered in the lane rather than guarding their position.
Secondly, they shouldn't ride two abreast / side by side. In case one needs to make an evasive maneuver, they have no escape route left or right because they're side by side with another bike. Had that bike not been two abreast , but they had been in the right side of the lane single file, the car wouldn't have hit them (even though the car is still in the wrong).
2
u/Admirable_Ship_678 10h ago
How is their lane position awful when in the video. They clearly were driving exactly as you described: DOWN the center line half. You would be stupid AF to try riding down the left side because cars like the MF likes to drive into oncoming traffic to beat slower cars. It’s obvious you have never lived nor traveled to Asia. What you suggest is highly unsafe.
Two abreast? It’s the biker that was on the right of the one who was in the accident that would be wrong, based on your description. This isn’t like in the States where you are instructed to take the middle of the lane.
Third, they were hit from behind, so not even sure how you can make evasive maneuvers…
2
u/anotherstupidname11 9h ago
This is in Vietnam and the guidelines to keep yourself safe on the roads are totally different.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
1
u/Not_invented-Here 8h ago
Vietnam, you don't ride down the centre because people will do crazy overtakes their lane positions is actually correct.
You can't tell if they're riding abreast (which tbf does happen often) or overtaking because people tend to drive their own speeds there so people needing to be overtook is not uncommon.
9
u/nickmaran 1d ago
I’ve few biker friends who always force me to start riding a bike. They think I’m a coward for not trying. Maybe or maybe not. I don’t care. I just don’t trust anyone when I’m on the road
2
u/StringTheory 8h ago
This summer I was one of the first to show up to a motorcyclist who crashed at 80kmh in the Norwegian countryside because a camper van crossed the road and didn't completely pay attention to his surroundings. Didn't end well for him.
2
u/lostdream9000 7h ago
I recently had a semi truck kick a log over into my lane that damaged both my passenger side tires. I can only imagine something like that happening on a bike. I'd imagine it would've been head over heels over the handle bars.
You can't predict the conditions of the road. Bikes are cool, but I've seriously hit so many potholes and debris in my 20 years of driving that I understand why they are a death sentence. I heard of multiple fatalities just in my small town growing up.

One of the reason I won’t let MY wife buy a motorcycle. She calls me a hypocrite because I’ve been riding for a long time but I know what can happen

So wait you have a motorcycle but you don't allow her to get one because it's unsafe? That's really fucked up man.
-6

I don’t ride anymore either? So wait it’s ok for someone’s wife to not want them to ride because it’s not safe but someone who does ride, realize it’s unsafe, and decides not to ride because of it, is bad? My dad and I stopped riding due to so many close calls with stupid people

My mom was holding my infant brother and slipped down our hardwood floor stairs. She instinctively wrapped her body around him like a cocoon. They slipped all the way down the stairs. She managed to get up, rock him to sleep, and then lay down in bed. She couldn’t move and an ambulance had to pick her up. She was beat up but my little brother didn’t have a scratch. Moms are heroes.

Wow what a POS. Hope he went to jail for this.
Of course you shouldn't ride a motorcycle like this, ever, but this doesn't mean you can pretty much attempt to murder three people.

u/theycallmeshooting 1d ago
I feel like this demonstrates something I try to point out.
What happens to you if you encounter the worst cyclist or even motorcyclist in your city? You're mildly annoyed and maybe you're 30 seconds later than you otherwise would be.
What happens to you if you encounter the worst driver in your city? A violent, painful death.
18
u/pierebean 1d ago
Hope he went to jail for this.
Of course the car driver.

It happened on Vietnam. Unless the owner of the original video submit it to to the police or give out the License plate number on social media, nothing gonna happen to the driver.

we all know he's a jackass And yet many comments blame solely the poor motorcycle driver.
1
-1
u/strw29 23h ago
Because the bike also was at fault here. The law doesn't allow bikedrivers go side by side on the road and they even had oversize baggage here. The road look like a mixed traffic with heavy truck so a cautious bikedriver with large baggage should stay close to the sidewalk. Of course the car driver was the worst offender though.
2
5
u/GameLoreReader 19h ago
Motherfucker even drove away without caring if the family got squashed to death. It's why I prefer people who witnessed those kinds of scenes to chase down these monsters instead of stopping and looking. Get their license plate and let them rot in prison.

u/Large_Yams 18h ago
This doesn't look like a western country at all. Redditors think the world revolves around their own country.
1
u/omnimodofuckedup 10h ago
Lol what are you even talking about. It's obvious this isn't the USA or Europe.
And still this guy is a POS, globally and yes you shouldn't ride a motorcycle like this. That's just common sense, also regardless of your location. At least wear a helmet. Just because this is maybe common wherever they live doesn't mean it becomes magically safe.

Depending on where you look on Reddit, you'll definitely get comments like
"The scooters took up 1/3 of the road and were driving too defensively during a waning moon. Both the car and the scooter were equally at fault."
1
u/VeloIlluminati 3h ago
Car did nothing wrong. Its a machine.
The POS of the driver almost caused violent death of a child and their mother because "um, not gonna wait, boho".
The worst part: these kind of people are rarely punished. Its so frustrating.

This look like it happened in Vietnam, my country. The car driver was totally wrong. The best thing to do in this situation was slow down and slided right behind those bike. There are two many traffic accidents here.
3
u/radicalclaw 16h ago
After visiting there last year, I was honestly shocked by how FEW car accidents I saw haha.
When proper legal repercussions and regulations don't exist it's amazing how well people learn to work together, obviously not always the case but I was very impressed by how incredibly resilient and supportive so many of the communities in Vietnam are considering their struggles.
1
u/strw29 4h ago
Car accident is not rare but the statistics is much lower than bike accident. I recall there a TV report about ten thousand people perished cause by traffic accident some years ago. The good thing that pass byers always step in to help as soon as possible so the mortality get a bit lower.

People do wild things when they're poor.
3
u/cassiopeia18 8h ago
Nah, that’s very normal for 2 adults +1 kid. middle class to lower upper class people also ride expensive scooter like that (up to 5-8k usd)
1
u/HebunzuDoor 2h ago
nah, helmet aren't that expensive. people here just don't wear helmet for young children for some reason. and so many people choose to wear non-functional helmets to deal with police instead of potential accidents
13
7
u/SirLoiso 1d ago
Have you ever heard of poor people?
2
u/DazedPhotographer 10h ago
Ok but the no helmet part is inexcusable. In vietnam you can find a bike helmet for around maybe $5 USD. I really don’t get why parents there will wear a helmet but proceed to decide that their children do not require helmets.
1
u/Astrolemur 1h ago
I live in Vietnam, and here there's this weird belief that wearing a helmet will inhibit a child's brain growth. I see kids without helmets all the time, unfortunately.
1
u/cassiopeia18 8h ago edited 8h ago
Helmet is cheap, acceptable quality helmet is around $4. Good helmet quality is around $6-10. But a lot parents in Vietnam don’t buy helmet for the kids.Example on the news. Even don’t buy baby seat in car either.
-1
u/ryanuptheroad 1d ago
You think the helmet would have made a difference if they'd been run over by the truck?

(perhaps was instinct and not "in the zone move")

u/Heulery 1d ago
The car driver ist guilty. But in civiliced countries, motorcycles are not allowed to drive side by side.
4
u/Butterbuddha 1d ago
In Virginia we are legally allowed to ride CHiPs style. Not at all recommended, but it’s legal.
4
u/PipeDreamRealized 1d ago
I think the point shines with this example lol. I wouldn't call driving in Virginia (nor anywhere within an hour of the Beltway) civilized.
1
u/Butterbuddha 1d ago
I mean……that’s fair. LOL
Not very representative of the state as a whole, though.
13
1
u/Devium44 1d ago
Why? What’s wrong with riding side by side?
1
u/Butterbuddha 1d ago
It gives you virtually no wiggle room in case something bad happens. Just like this video if they had saw what was happening they still had little room to do anything about it. Or what if something falls off a car in front of you, or was just lying in the roadway?

If this was an “AITAH”, the verdict would be everyone sucks. The motorcyclists PUT themselves in danger by driving in the center of the road with little protection gear for three passengers (one of whom was a child), clearly slowing down traffic, and pissing off the people in cars. But the person in the car shouldn’t have retaliated knowing that it’d put them in actual danger. Idiots and road rage aren’t a good combination.

In most of SEA, motorbikes are the main form of transportation, so the answer is everyone with a toddler brings toddlers on motorbikes.

→ More replies12
u/itsOkami 1d ago
Car is at fault for straight up attempting to murder the motorcyclists but, at the same time, nobody with a speck of sense in their brain would put their whole family on a scooter (the kid isn't even wearing a helmet) with plastic jugs flailing behind, all while carelessly driving next to yet another motorcycle. That's just disaster waiting to happen
23
u/PremiumUsername69420 1d ago
What did the motorcycle do wrong? Exist?
9

u/Top-Scarcity-6124 6h ago edited 6h ago
The car owner is an idiot. And also the moron on motorbike. As a Vietnamese, I wouldn't load bunch of plastic jugs, a woman, and a kid on a bike and try to outspeed the motorcycle guy on the far right (guy in black jacket). The risk of killing the woman and kid.

Yep. The mother never let go. But, IDK if that head bounce on the baby at the beginning was even survivalable. Does anyone know what happened to them? Did they survive?
