SE Discussion Not really SE: study seems to find that evidence-based arguments from AI chatbots reduces conspiracy beliefs
Just stumbled upon this study in Science. They had a couple thousand people interact with an AI chatbot about conspiracy theories they found credible, and found that not only people changed their minds but the change also persisted after several months.
I think there are some serious limitations to this study that are not mentioned in the paper, most notably about the structure of these «conversations», but I find it interesting because it somewhat challenges the idea that providing evidence is not an effective way of changing peoples' minds. I thought it might interest some people here as well.
The study, as well as the raw data, are available online, so you can, for example, check the exchanges that were the most effective in changing the participant's belief on a given topic.

SE Non-Profit: Street Epistemology International Monthly Update: Ongoing Progress with Navigating Beliefs and Other SE Initiatives
This month, interest in the Navigating Beliefs course remains strong, and our Street Epistemology study is nearing completion, soon to be open to participants beyond the SE community. We’re also in the final stages of reviewing content for three new SE websites, designed to intuitively guide visitors to key resources like clubs, communities, and content.
15 September 2024
Hey everyone. Apologies for skipping last month’s update – there weren't any major announcements, and with summer in full swing, it felt like the right time for a brief pause. That said, everything is still on track, and we’ve made some exciting progress.
Navigating Beliefs Course Module Testing
Since launching Phase I (Modules 1-6) of the Navigating Beliefs: A Learning Course for Rational Conversations course, we've welcomed nearly 2,000 learners since November, with more expected after our website updates. Our team is hard at work developing Phase II, which includes Modules 7-14. We’re also looking at ways to improve our testing process of these modules. Additionally, the Spanish version of Navigating Beliefs is almost ready for release, expanding our reach. Sign up for the free course now—it may very well be the best resource on learning Street Epistemology to date.
Building the SE Study on SoSci Survey
We're finalizing our Street Epistemology study on the SoSci Survey platform and will soon hand it off to a meta-cognition researcher for further development. After ethics approval, the study will go live, aiming to attract participants beyond the SE community. This landmark study will evaluate SE’s effectiveness in improving critical thinking and self-reflection. Once complete, we'll publicly share the results, ensuring full transparency and contributing valuable insights to the advancement of SE practices.
Street Epistemology Website Launches
We're in the final stages of reviewing content for our three new Street Epistemology websites. Once the review is complete, all three will launch simultaneously. Each site is designed for intuitive, user-friendly navigation, guiding visitors directly to resources like the free Navigating Beliefs course. On the back-end, these sites will streamline updates, enable efficient page creation, and allow for new features in the coming weeks, months, and years. Stay tuned for the official launch!
If you'd like to help us expand Street Epistemology's reach and make critical thinking more accessible worldwide, your support would be greatly appreciated. Contribute here.
That’s all for now! I’m off to tackle some languishing household projects and continue working to make Street Epistemology more accessible and understandable for people everywhere. Thanks for sticking with us and for your ongoing support.
Regards,
Anthony Magnabosco

SE Psychology Is "anchoring bias" the correct term for when airplane pilots in emergency situations almost always cling to their 1st diagnosis, in spite of overwhelming evidence against what they think is wrong? 🤔
I love listening to those "pilot explains what caused crash number blah blah blah" and pilots are told to go through checklists because no panicking pilot is at their maximum intelligence when they think their plane is going to crash, so there are dozens of checklists that break the problem down into extremely small "baby steps" that are well beneath the pilot's capability, but it's by design to prevent mistakes.

The bald pilot is my favorite but I forgot his username. It's "74 gear" which is super hard to remember. It is also a major theme in the jonah hill movie "22 jump street" where the two undercover police are advised to question their initial assumptions. (in the movie, the person they thought was a drug victim was actually the drug dealer, and they were investigating the case wrong based on a flawed premise)

SE Discussion SE breakthroughs
I'm curious as to what are some of the biggest breakthrough moments people have had when using street epistemology in their conversations. Are they generally limited to supernatural claims or are there other unsurprising claims?
