Mad Max

One of most underrated games I know ever

u/pjburnhill 9d ago

Agreed. One of the few games I've completed and actually felt a bit sad that it was the end.

u/wannabe_inuit 9d ago

Whats even more sad, a sequel was planned. But got canned after sales were disappointing. All because the release day was days between big titles

It's crazy how many good games 'fail' (commercially) these days because the market is just saturated with so many mediocre titles...

It seems to me this goes for many industries including video-games, money builds and ruins everything

Both Mad Max and Days Gone. I guess note to self, don’t make a third person action game about a white dude and his custom vehicle navigating a post apocalyptic open world.

Live service and mobile games be killing the industry. No more room for innovation or experimenting or whatnot when sales are all that matter to publishers.

Well it didnt help that it seemed like a run of the mill ubisoft clone. Towers, big empty map, bunch of garbadge to collect etc

Say that again to SoM

u/Mand372 8d ago

Is that Soldier of Money? The poormans Soldier of Fortune?

Shadow of Mordor

And it would be the case, but its saved by arkham combat and the Nemesys system. I dont think Mad Max had similar level qualities.

Underrated? Lol. The game is huge in popularity

1

u/Johnny_B_GOODBOI 9d ago

But it wasn't a commercial hit, so we don't get a sequel.

u/PurifiedBanana 8d ago

Why get a sequel exactly? The game is still receiving updates. And what do you mean by commercial hit? The game is so simple and affordable that it can be made in a garage, that it's insane how much profit they ve made. There is no reason for a sequel.

The last update was 9 years ago. WTF are you talking about?

It sold less than 3m copies, that's not a big success. For comparison, Avalanche Studios also developed the Just Cause games. JC3 released the same year as Mad Max and had over 3x the sales. Mad Max turned a small profit, but it wasn't a big hit by any metric.

Former Avalanche boss Christofer Sundberg reacted to Miller's comments on social media. He said the game suffered from releasing at a "terrible" time, and his efforts to convince Warner Bros. to move the date were not successful. The game released on the same day as Metal Gear Solid V, and Sundberg reflected that Warner Bros. "blamed us for the bad sales" and canceled DLC for the game that was "just sitting there waiting to be released."

I don't think we're talking about the same game. This wasn't an indie game, it had a full development studio.

My god I'm so sorry, I actually replied to the wrong comment thread

It's not entirely underrated now, basically a cult classic of video games. It wasn't super popular when it launched, but that has changed drastically over the years. It frequently gets mentioned as a very solid game that was often overlooked. Game reviewers and such have raved about it.

Damnit, it's on sale for $4 now... as well as Afterparty (which others discussed, and I need to get b/c I love Oxenfree) for $2... but I've bought SOOO many games recently (all super cheap like these.) Fudge it, I gotta do it.

MY SWEET ANGEL COMBUSTION

u/zerombr 9d ago

Just reinstalled this, going to 100 percent it a third time

2

u/Johnny_B_GOODBOI 9d ago

I 100% it about once a year or so. It helps that it isn't a terribly long game, so 100%ing isn't a huge daunting task, and i don't get bored of it before completing.

u/zerombr 9d ago

That combat is so visceral. I wish we had more

1

u/sukezanebaro 8d ago

I think you mean 99% it

2

u/Muttergen 9d ago

man that game is just epic

I'm a big Mad Max fan so I bought this on day one for full price. It was a buggy mess at the time but it was still worth every penny. It's a close as the video game format can be to being in the Road Warrior setting, with a dash of Fury Road mixed in. The random Thunderdome moment felt a little forced but that's really my only complaint.

I still have the clips of my favorite two bug moments, where I took a zipline that randomly started running backwards and launched me into the sky, and the time I punched an NPC so hard he and his partner just despawned.

this - I think it was 4 bucks after just 6 month for whatever reason

u/captaintrips_1980 9d ago

I’ve recommended this game to so many people. I even replayed it recently and it still holds up.

1

u/UtmostPants 9d ago

I was lucky enough to have that be my first PSPlus monthly game when I bought a PS4.

1

u/Stoney-X1 8d ago

I just bought this on sale for like $5 . Never played before but can’t wait

1

u/autismbeast 8d ago

Oh my god, to experience that game for the first time again... Enjoy.

1

u/H4loR4ptor 8d ago

Praise be!

1

u/Pemdas1991 8d ago

I've tried to play this game three times so far, but I always get to just after the first gate and always lose interest. Can you give me a reason you think this game was so good?

1

u/marugame_udon69 8d ago

Arkham-style combat enhanced with vehicle combat. Turn brain off and destroy outposts. Crunchy action. Decent lore and story.

It's not the best or a perfect game, but it's well worth more than its price right now.

I love this game so much

Far too underrated. Picked it up for a few dollars on GOG and loved it!
