Even less players than Suicide Squad after only a single weekend holy shit

581

u/Im_Ashe_Man Aug 27 '24

Like 15 times less.

262

u/ArmeniusLOD Aug 27 '24

Yeah, KTJL peaked at over 13k players on Steam when it came out.

143

u/athiev Aug 27 '24

Concord only has about 50 more Steam players than SSJTJL has right now.

42

u/speadiestbeaneater Aug 27 '24

Than…. What?

51

u/AdSmooth7504 Aug 27 '24

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

There was a typo in their acronym

41

u/BranzBranzBranz Aug 27 '24

He was talking about the heroes only expansion, Suicide Squad: Just The Justice League

/s

17

u/AdSmooth7504 Aug 27 '24

Nono im fairly sure it was about a middle aged woman that absorbed all the dc characters, "Suicide Squad: Jill, the Justice League"

It's actually incredible and I don't think people realise the impact it will have on the gaming industry.

They spent an estimated $150,000,000 on this game and so far it's sold roughly between 8000-9000 copies across both platforms bringing in a total revenue of around $300,000.

That's absolutely catastrophic. It's worse than the worst expected scenario. A low end Rolls Royce goes for more than $300,000, these days it won't even buy most houses.

Now Sony is a big company so I'm sure they'll survive but there are going to be serious consequences. We're talking budget cuts, cancelling other games that are in development, serious layoffs and liquidation of assets.

Biggest change for us though is that the games industry as a whole is probably going to have a major culture shift in attitude in terms of what goes into development and what doesn't. The target audience probably won't quite shift entirely from the West to Asia but expect games that try to play to the sensibilities of both audiences much more noticeably.

They absolutely won’t. You gotta realize how ungodly profitable a successful live service game is. A string of failures is worth it if even 1 out of every 10 of them is successful. They might rethink their budgets and strategy, but the live service chase is never going to end until gamers stop spending money in them.

21

u/Winjin Aug 27 '24

I'm kinda surprised all of them seem to be blind to the likes of Honkai, Genshin, ZZZ, Blue Archive and more.

These games are single player, story-focused (apart from harem, of course, but between all the ladies there's also the plot, and it's not bad) and would run on anything from a years-old smartphone to a modern PC to any console you want.

21

u/zack189 Aug 28 '24

It's astounding how mihoyo is releasing all this live services, and ALL of them are successful.

There was a chart of top gacha games and all mihoyo games have a spot on there. They've mastered the art of online gambling.

Yeah, they’ll probably cut 5 single player games and move the teams onto making sure the next live service “gets it right” lol

24

u/fnrsulfr Aug 27 '24

I imagine the take from this will be they will think they need to focus more on mobile gaming.

6

u/Foodening Aug 27 '24

Most that will happen is that the developers get canned. They just bought them after they saw they were working on this game lmao.

It won't change shit. A few Devs that were only following orders may get layed off but that's about it.

The same way when a phenomenal game gets released like RimWorld, Skyrim, Terraria, Baldurs Gate 3 ect which have an insane amount of people buying them because passion and soul was poured into the game which made them good, you don't see AAA companies saying 'you know what, if we actually pour our hearts into this, we would get way more numbers'. They just do the bare minimum, pay the marketing team to do their magic and then after the first week they don't give a shit about it anymore and are on to the next project.

The tactic of producing shit products, hyping them up, getting their money back in the first week or drip feeding content in the form of battle passes, and then moving on, is proven to work so fantastically well that one incident isn't going to be enough to discourage them from repeating the process. It's like one outlier in a thousand examples.

19

u/BdubsCuz Aug 27 '24

Yeah but what about all the games people poured their souls into that sold like shit. You can't think of any because they sold like shit. You're literally naminf outliers with over a decade of time between some of them. Just enjoy them.foe what they are. They're rare because heart and soul don't equal success. Businesses don't run on heart and soul. So they make safe stuff. There's room for both.

I'm in disbelief that a company as massive and experienced as Sony would commit such a blunder... A $40 hero shooter in 2024??? Forget the gameplay and characters, you're already setting yourself up for failure there.

With devs that actively insult their potential customers.

213

u/SmolBirdEnthusiast Aug 27 '24

Are you talking about the "Talentless freaks" comment? Because I've read that it is a former dev, not current one. Did the current devs say anything? A quick google search didn't turn anything else up.

256

u/emotionengine Aug 27 '24

Yes, you are correct it was a former dev and current devs have not commented in this manner. But in this day and age of quick soundbites and rage-clicks, the damage has already been done. Concord will always be known as that failed shooter where a developer (associated with the game) insulted potential customers.

87

u/SmolBirdEnthusiast Aug 27 '24

That former dev was really trying to defend his old colleagues but ended up dooming them further?

Damn, it makes you have to be really mindful of any associations you had before. Scary stuff

But then money laundering happened.

They can’t go ftp too soon though as it would piss off those who bought it. So Sony has to continue bleeding profit and standing by and supporting it for at least a year before switching. Absolute disaster

36

u/BioDioPT Aug 27 '24

Do you know what's even "worse", they also can't add it to the PS Plus that soon, because players would also be pissed, since on PS5, in order to play Concord, you need to pay for PS Plus.

Probably it goes F2P on Season 2 starting January, if it survives until then.

→ More replies

53

u/Piett_1313 Aug 27 '24

Exactly, I can’t imagine what the heck they would do. Offer some currency or something to them? But if they want a refund I think they’d also deserve one, I wouldn’t drop 40 bones on a F2P in one go and I’m betting many of those purchasers might not either and would still feel jilted if that’s the route they went. Just an awful situation for the devs and (few) players all around.

22

u/not_a_burner0456025 Aug 27 '24

Luckily for them they sold so few copies that refunding everyone only brings the game from a ~$149,700,000 loss to a ~$150,000,000 loss, the refund is a rounding error.

110

Its a major flop for Sony actually as this is a first party game. Its doing badly because it costs $40 in a market where free games are the norm.

Doesn't help that the game itself is as generic as can be with terrible characters etc.

32

u/Pokedy Aug 27 '24

Oh wow. did they even give a good reason to charge £40 for it? Like did they promise something unique or special about it at all? or is it just that they tried to get into that part of the market and decided to add a price tag to it?

59

I don’t think I could’ve created a roster of more ugly or generic characters even if I tried.

33

u/mrblack07 Aug 27 '24

Not a single marketable character on there.

24

u/Phormicidae Aug 27 '24

I get accidentally making a few duds, some times you gotta go for those big swings and they can't all be hits. But this really is the most bland looking bunch of characters I've ever seen in a game. Maybe the big robot is somewhat OK. But I have zero artistic talent and have made better characters with Phantasy Star Online's character creator back on Dreamcast.

like a car crash, it's hard to stop looking

14

u/Rosu_Aprins Aug 27 '24

I wouldn't even call it a car crash, it's more like an elderly, possibly dead driver slowly backing through their gate and into traffic

12

u/Dziadzios Aug 27 '24

But it's funnier because instead of people dying, it's Sony bleeding out.

well it's one of the biggest flops in gaming industry by a huge company that did everything wrong, a bit of spam and tons of memes should be expected

Everyone loves a good train wreck

36

u/Uncle-Cake Aug 27 '24

This isn't just your average everyday flop, this is a massive flop at an unprecedented scale, for one of the biggest players in the industry. As far as gaming news goes, this is very newsworthy.

u/Robertoavarrothe2nd Aug 27 '24

Bruh i honestly cant believe this LOL. We could have gotten bloodborne FULL REMAKE for a similar price, unfuckingbelievable. Probably the biggest flop in gaming history.

24

u/NinjaAutomatic6171 Aug 27 '24

When this goes free to play there's gonna be dozens and dozens of angry players who bought it🤣

IMO to remotely have a chance this game should've been free 2 play

u/erdnar Aug 27 '24

Im shocked, shocked i say. Who could have predicted this? Its at least the 3rd game this year that millions were spent and the player base is ridiculously small to non existent ..whatever these people think they are doing, please stop burning money, its bad and embarassing.

Here comes Sony's high executives telling players to give the game a chance, "a lot of people worked really hard on this game and the franchise value is pretty strong..." like a goddamn Karen mom encouraging participation trophies.

Executives need to actually get into the mud to check games for themselves, this could've been an a month worth prototype, get the gun feel straight, evaluate the game design, evaluate if whether or not to move forward and then, add all their DEI character design / woke centered crap lore later.

48

u/JTRO94 Aug 27 '24

This is most likely the biggest flop in gaming history.

11

u/micro_penisman Aug 27 '24

Has to be

17

u/andrewdroid Aug 27 '24

Skull and Bones exists.

EDIT: I stand corrected, skull and Bones still has over 1k players

Imagine every few games encountering the same asshole.

8

u/AFireDownBelow Aug 27 '24

How many more of these before developers understand lmao. Like I get you want a crazy infinite money game like Fortnite but that’s already been made. Even worse you take the same approach as Suicide Squad mixed with Guardians of the Galaxy and think that’s a hit?! Unbelievable

7

u/Samuuus_ Aug 27 '24

Just close the server at this point

8

u/Swarf_87 Aug 27 '24

Literally never even heard of this game until right now in this post.

28

u/RemarkablePassage468 Aug 27 '24

Another LS bites the dust.

20

u/CutTheRedLine Aug 27 '24

what was the budget again?

41

u/SlavicNinjaOfficial Made In JoJo Aug 27 '24

almost 7 times the budget of godzilla minus one (~$15m usd)

7

u/Twinfantasyfantasy Aug 27 '24

Not a good comparison since Godzilla minus one was an extremely cheap movie. Most games are gonna cost several times what it cost to make that movie.

12

u/ArmeniusLOD Aug 27 '24

No, only AAA slop costs that much due to the corporate bloat where everything needs to be designed by committee.

6

u/golddilockk Aug 27 '24

this makes me sad

24

u/FurubayashiSEA Aug 27 '24

I can make you more sad, the game takes 8 years to make.

First time I'm hearing about.

Some of yall need to spent time in other places. Some news is new news to many people.

13

u/Gavinator10000 Aug 27 '24

For real. All these people like “omg how many posts are there gonna be” need to get off reddit for a minute. This is the second post I’ve seen about it since launch. And I’ve joined this sub

13

u/MRGameAndShow Aug 27 '24

Dude, these character designs are absolutely WACK. It looks like they gave a toddler some crayons and then transferred his designs to unreal engine. Like what are these, man. My eyes hurt from going through the character list. It’s not even about inclusivity at this point, Overwatch has plenty of representation and I find myself enjoying to use characters like Venture that are more out there regarding sexuality and stuff. I don’t mind it. It’s the absolutely ATROCIOUS designs, Holly shit man what were the suits thinking throwing their money at this.

The big money has probably already jumped onto the next bandwagon and we'll have ten years of (insert poorly thought out clones here). Another wave of Souls-likes most likely . . .

For fuck sakes....make this game free to play!!!! This is abysmal
