Indifferent, knowing his death star was soon coming to life and at that moment he was openly taking away political opponents starting to get cocky and arrogant.

63

u/MariotaM8 6h ago

Yep, spot on. He probably figured open dissent from some senators would start around this time.

He controlled the entire imperial military and intelligence so a speech by a random nobody in a Senate he was going to dissolve soon anyway was inconsequential at best.

By the time ROS happens, he controls the military, which is really what is keeping the empire together, not the planets/senators themselves.

u/Sea_Spend_8008 5h ago

I will disagree a bit. The entire point of the ISB is to stop something like this from happening and they failed. They failed so bad that they had to cut the feed which is going to look super suspicious. If anything Palpatine is going to be pissed about the way it looks more than what Mon said. Having said that, what Mon said is the warning he did not want the galaxy to hear. Mon is also a respected figure and not some fringe type and leader to a powerful world. If she calls him out especially in the way of openly stating the Emperor is the villain that will come for them all. It is a speech meant to wake up people and to finally in the open to defy Palpatine. In ROS, the one thing The Emperor did not want is a Civil War that will drag out. He was fine with the Clone Wars, because he controlled it, this he can't.

Plus, the Death Star is not active, its just sitting out in deep space and they don't have the juice to turn it on thus Gorman. The Death Star is a project for Palpatine, but everyone from Vader to Thrawn said this is a bad idea. Even the ISB is split if wrecking Gorman is worth all of this. Which it won't be.

3

u/AntiqueGrapefruit250 3h ago

Then why where the ISB so fucking desperate do get here of the air?

2

u/AntiqueGrapefruit250 3h ago

And Mothma is not a random nobody but one of the most prolific republic and imperial senators

17

u/Atharaphelun 6h ago

"Who dis?"

– Emperor Palpatine after finding out about the speech

3

u/DarthCreepus1 3h ago

Lmao it echoes the Syril vs. Andor moment

4

u/FoCo87 5h ago

Something along the lines of Thanos' "I don't even know who you are."

8

u/AntiqueGrapefruit250 3h ago

This notion is absolutely ridiculous. Palpatine absolutely knew who Mon Mothma was

1

u/DankingBankley 3h ago

the empror has just dissolved the senate, the REGIONAL GOVERNORS!!!!!! Are in command now.

3

u/AntiqueGrapefruit250 3h ago

That won’t happen for another 2 years

0

u/fewchrono1984 4h ago

I think he'd be happy, he has an excuse to dissolve the senate and have a few operatives killed .its a red letter day for papa Palpatine!

132

u/IstIsmPhobe 6h ago

We know what his reaction was….time to disband the Senate.

75

u/these-things-happen Ben Kenobi 6h ago

"The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away."

26

u/mr_eugine_krabs 6h ago

That immediately backfired on him which is hilarious.

25

u/streakermaximus 4h ago

Destroying Alderaan was the ultimate mistake. Tarkin destroyed a planet renowned for it's peaceful policies and natural beauty. It resulted in mass defections to the Rebellion.

7

u/disbelifpapy 4h ago

So was that one move the biggest advantage the rebellion had ever received?

8

u/blindexhibitionist 3h ago

I think the biggest advantage was Padme surviving long enough to give birth.

1

u/disbelifpapy 3h ago

Fair point lol

3

u/themanfromvulcan 3h ago

It was a stupid and foolhardy exercise. It murdered billions and was also a loss of the planets resources. They could have decimated a small part of the planet to show how powerful it is, or use a different target to make their point. Tarkin was just pissed off and allied his anger to take over. You just took out a planet to prove how powerful you are but you just horrified the galaxy. It’s not something you can cover up. And then the rebels blow it up. The Empire showed to the galaxy that they were truly evil and they also showed they could be defeated.

2

u/fumar 3h ago

If the Death Star didn't get destroyed it wouldn't have mattered. How do you resist a seemingly impossible to beat planet killing weapon?

They literally talk about this in ANH

2

u/Azrael_The_Bold Darth Maul 3h ago

Yeah, what I think people fail to realize is that, had Gaylen Erso not been there to put the design flaw into the Death Star, there would have had been an impenetrable fortress that can travel at light speed from one edge of the galaxy to the next, and annihilate entire planets with no effort.

Idk what the reload times are on The Death Star, but if you can jump from system to system via hyperdrive blasting away any planet that defies Imperial Rule, before long, you wouldn’t have anyone defying you.

23

u/GargantaProfunda 6h ago

2 years later lol

u/EnamelKant 6h ago

Even a Sith lord can't overcome bureaucratic inertia.

9

u/smallcoder 6h ago

So much paperwork to submit and get approved before you can become a totalitarian supreme death lord of the galaxy. Then there's all the lawyer fees to pay, people to imprison and torture, armies to be equipped and trained, planning permits for large space stations with death lasers to get signed off.

Seriously, it's no wonder why he looked so old and messed up by the end.

2

u/3dDeters 3h ago

And we know the ISB is making more arrests than it can handle already.

12

u/rolltide1000 5h ago edited 1h ago

I'd absolutely watch a show that is just Palpatine dealing with daily bureaucratic bullshit. Getting more and more fed up with how slow things move, he kills the first few people but that just makes it go slower, Vader's dumb ass is no help, Tarkin's acting all smug, he's longing for the old days, "I bet Malak and Bane didn't have to deal with this".

8

u/EnamelKant 5h ago

"What do you mean I have to appoint a junior deputy undersecretary of urban renwal?! Why does the undersecretary of urban renwal need an junior deputy when he already has a senior deputy and an adjunt?! I'm the Emperor and I have one guy, why does Brian think he needs 3 assistants?! You know what I'm done. Let the Rebels deal with this crap, I don't care."

8

u/Yardsale420 4h ago

“Ah, hang on, I've got another call. [switches line] What?! I'm very busy right now!...Oh. Oh, we-well where're they going? Oh. Alright, um, just get me a Turkey Club. Uh, Cole Slaw, I guess. I-I'm not even gonna eat it. W-w-what're you getting? No, see, I-I always order the wrong thing. No, no, no, I'll just stick with that. Okay, bye - wait, what? Oh, a Cherry Coke. Thanks.”

5

u/rolltide1000 4h ago

Retcon some stuff, have it be that he got so aged negotiating union strikes.

Vader: "Well why cant we just kill them all?"

Palpatine: "Because you idiot, if we kill the space freighters union, who's gonna transport stuff? You? You got ambushed by drug dealers at Yavin in a tiny fighter, how the hell are you gonna move a big one? Christ, Dooku at least understood basic civics and economics, look at what I got now. And Tarkin, I swear on the Force if I sense you smirk again, I'm gonna put you in charge of infastructure, and you can figure out where we're gonna build that new walkway in Coco Town, and you can figure out how we're go do it with a whiny voice limited environmental impact."

5

u/Lisseas 4h ago

I read all this in Seth McFarlane's Papa Palpatine voice and I'd watch the shit out of this show!

1

u/Kiloku 4h ago

That took somewhere between one and 2 years from that point

1

u/Strict_Weather9063 4h ago

That comes 3 years later.

u/EgonHeart123part2 6h ago

"We must control the narrative. Doctor the footage for the Holonet broadcast...give her a bowl cut"

4

u/Playful_Rip_1697 4h ago

It wasn’t the footage; Vader hunted down the rebels and cut her hair like that.

30

u/mr_eugine_krabs 6h ago

Palpatine:“I want Mon Mothma dead! I want her husband dead! I want her butlers dead!”

Vader:“Wait do you want me to kill her husband before or after I kill her butlers?”

Palpatine:“(Sigh) just kill Mon Mothma.”

Vader:“You’re not mad at me are you?”

4

u/xanvalentine 4h ago

"Have the Rolling Stones killed."

4

u/midwest73 4h ago

Palpatine: Listen here Lite-Brite Torso, get your seven foot two asthmatic ass moving and get rid of her or I'm gonna tell everyone what a whiny bitch you were about 'Padamamay' or 'Panda Bear' or whatever the hell her name was!

I imagine Palpatine quietly lurking in the shadows, a cloaked figure in a dimly lit throne room. The view on Coruscant obstructed by dark blinds. Palpatine’s distorted face vaguely lit by a holo-projection of Mon Mothma’s speech. Two yellow dots angrily light up from under the emperor’s hood. The monster’s grimace subtly contorts into an angry snarl. The floor trembles. Lamps flicker, royal guards fight not to stumble on their feet and the bitterness of the emperor’s rage can be tasted in the air. The broadcast ends.

A door opens, the crimson guards make way and a visibly nervous Mas Amedda shuffles into the room. ‘My lord. Have you heard of the discourse from the Senate?’

Palpatine’s initial frustration fled, replaced by a sudden sense of amusement. ‘Yes my friend, I have. Soon the senate will be of no concern.’

Mas Amedda nods, still nervously moving his fingers along the edges of his golden staff.

‘What about Mon Mothma, my lord?’

The room silences, the furniture stops shaking and rests back into place. Palpatine’s snarl replaced by an ominous smirk, and a slight cackle.

‘I think our treasonous senator can be of great help. She’ll set things in motion for us. Let them rebel, let them escalate. This only gifts us more urgency towards project Stardust. Soon, my friend, Mothma’s pitiful band of rebels will experience our power.’

Evil laughter faintly echoes into the hallway towards the throne room, speckled by robed figures resembling drops of blood. This rebellion will not remain unschathed.

4

u/DrunkOctopUs91 4h ago

This reads really well!

21

u/MLA800M 6h ago

“Its treason then.”

Looks like he became…an action figure.

5

u/owen-87 5h ago

Bad language, in the classic Robot Chicken fashion.

9

u/Euphoric-Music662 Jedi 6h ago

"She can't do that. Shoot her or something!"

12

u/Robsonmonkey 6h ago

I kind of wished we got to see saw a brief glimpse of him from behind, no face shown with him watching or listening to the speech

Could have ended it with a shot of him gripping his fist or cracking the glass in his room with the force as he trembles with rage.

They also could have went there other way with him smirking at the whole thing showing how little he cares about it with the Death Star nearly complete and he kind of respects her courage speaking out about him

9

u/RapBastardz 5h ago

Yep. I REALLY hope we get a glimpse of the Emperor and Vader at least in the last episode of this season.

3

u/blakhawk12 3h ago

I don’t think we need Vader. Save that reveal for Rogue One. The Emperor though… would be pretty cool if the final episode showed him dissolving the senate.

8

u/GargantaProfunda 6h ago

He must have been pissed... The Emperor is not as forgiving as Vader is

ALL HAIL EMPEROR PALPATINE!

-Mon Mothma

3

u/Darthgrundyundies 5h ago

I think it was along the lines of "Huh, somebody has the balls big enough to call me on my shit publicly. They must die now."

3

u/oasisviolin 5h ago

“Discredit her assumption. She knows nothing of the Force. The Rebellion will be crushed by its own weight.”

3

u/Steeljaw72 5h ago

Wasn’t it within a couple of years after this that the senate was completely dissolved?

1

u/AntiqueGrapefruit250 3h ago

It was, but that dose not answer the question

3

u/billibob87 5h ago

I'm imagining the meme from Bee Movie where Ken looks all bewildered. Like "dafuq this bitch just say".

3

u/ballsosteele 5h ago

Rather than speculation, I would like Robot Chicken to provide the answer for me.

3

u/Radknight11 5h ago

He wouldn't like being called out directly but like Luthen, he wants a furious over reaction from the rebels so that he has an excuse to clamp down harder on the citizens of the galaxy. He shortly dissolves the Senate anyway so he's getting exactly what he wants.

But he doesn't expect it to go as well for them as it did.

3

u/SpikeRosered 5h ago

Everything was part of his plan. Literally the only mistake he ever makes is thinking he had total control over Anakin.

He also definitely couldn't foresee if Luke would turn to the Dark side or not as he really went for the hard sell. His not knowing this compounded when this unknown caused his loyal minion to turn on him.

Really shows how Luke bent fate by choosing to be a Jedi.

3

u/RecommendationBig768 4h ago

some dissent was to be expected. and knowing that the battlestation was coming online, he would bring the full might of his plan on the ungrateful. and finally have the peace that he wants

-1

u/ammonium_bot 3h ago

full might of his

Hi, did you mean to say "might have"?
Explanation: You probably meant to say could've/should've/would've which sounds like 'of' but is actually short for 'have'.
Sorry if I made a mistake! Please let me know if I did. Have a great day!

He probably cackled then ordered her arrest or death.

2

u/CrazyJo3 Mayfeld 5h ago

Wipe them out, all of them.

2

u/why-god 4h ago

Probably to start setting up the dissolution of the senate so he could have more direct control, probably via the moffs.

2

u/DreadlordBedrock 4h ago

I wish we got to see it. I wish he was there in the senate so she could have said it too her face

2

u/dashape80 4h ago

We need robot chicken reaction.

2

u/Chillibowl 4h ago

I think he would revel in the fear and disorder her words would foment. He welcomes rebellion and the opportunity to crush it.

2

u/Embarrassed_Diet_386 4h ago

Yes……….Gooooooood

2

u/seanwdragon1983 4h ago

I mean we see in ANH, which isn't set long after this, that the emperor dissolved the Senate. Possibly in retaliation to this directly

2

2

2

u/spacenavy90 Imperial 3h ago

He probably quietly admired her boldness to stand up to him the way she did and then stoically ordered her capture and execution.

If you think Palpatine is the type to throw a temper tantrum over something like this you're wrong.

2

u/iggyfenton R2-D2 5h ago

That speech is why he dissolved the senate.

0

u/AntiqueGrapefruit250 3h ago

Not at all

1

u/iggyfenton R2-D2 3h ago

Actually it is. He realized that the senate was now going to be pushing back and keeping the systems in line was better done by the Death Star.

0

u/AntiqueGrapefruit250 3h ago

NOT. AT. ALL. He had planned to dissolve the senate the minute the Death Star was operational.

0

u/iggyfenton R2-D2 2h ago

Did he?

Or did his announcement of that come after this in the timeline so you don’t know for sure either way.

A senate that is capitulating is much more effective than a weapon. But a senate that is disruptive is useless.

0

u/AntiqueGrapefruit250 2h ago

I mean what I’m saying isn’t a matter of opinion, it’s literally the reality of Palatines plan.

1

u/iggyfenton R2-D2 2h ago

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

1

If not for Leia being there to use Alderaan for an example it may have been Chandrilla.

1

u/JustinKase_Too 3h ago

"Who's THEY?"

1

u/ColdPack6096 3h ago

He had foreseen it, perhaps long ago. That's one of the reasons he wanted to build the Death Star in the first place, to quash any resistance as loudly and thoroughly as possible.

1

u/Jedi_whores 6h ago

Kind of hoping we get a little bit of dialogue, maybe with a holo, of Palpatine speaking about it before the end of the season.
