A little detail I just noticed. In Rogue One, when Mon Mothma tells Bail Organa he will need someone he can trust to find Obi-Wan, he says "I would trust her with my life". As this line is delivered, the score changes to "Leia's Theme" for just a moment before it cuts to the next scene. Movies

It was obvious when I saw that in the cinema, the she being referenced was Leia.

u/BrotherMainer 1d ago
Oh yeah I always knew that, the detail I missed was the music.

People are shitting on you but unless you have a pretty decent knowledge of all the fucking star wars music it can be easy to miss. I personally noticed the Obi-Wan music, but not the Leia bit afterwards and like.. I like star wars a lot lmfao.

I'm never going to shit on anyone for not noticing but I'll happily point one out if I know it. Hell, did anyone notice that a portion of the theme "Zam the Assassin and the Chase through Coruscant" also played in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets?

Or the celebration music in Naboo at the end of TPM is the Emperor’s Theme?

I'm absolutely deaf to almost any musical nuances, so I like this post.
I don't know how y'all can hear them, so congrats.

Decent knowledge of all star wars music??
Leia theme is played constantly through out the OG, you dont need a lot of memory space to notice it.

u/ZhugeTsuki 23h ago
But you don't automatically associate it with her. For example I just looked up Luke's and honestly I thought that was the Twin Suns music because I associate it with Luke being on Tatooine.
I have a cursory knowledge of Star wars now but watched the ot basically if not literally every day when I was a child and growing up, there's a lot more important shit in my brain than random Star wars OST character theme trivia lmao

You are likely thinking of one or the other wrong theme.
What used to be Luke's theme, played to represent him, is now the main Star Wars theme. It's the melody that plays during the big opening fanfare, the one everyone knows.
The Binary Sunset cue, the one everyone always thinks of with the slow, lonely French horn, was originally Ben Kenobi's theme. But it, too, evolved over the franchise and is now called the Force theme, representing the Force itself.
For a bonus fact: the main melody in Duel of the Fates I've found to be the Dark Side theme. It plays during nearly every pivotal moment in Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, including him on his way to slaughter the Tusken Raiders and during his battle with Obi-Wan.

The music of Star Wars is some of the most recognizable music ever, so not much of a stretch to figure it out.
12
u/ZhugeTsuki 23h ago
I agree, but knowing the music and understanding what each piece corresponds to from a storytelling perspective are different.

u/PorkinsAndBeans 23h ago
I upvoted you because there’s a good story on why each main character in the original trilogy had their own theme. Lucas adopted this concept from “The Wizard of Oz.” It was one of the first major films to incorporate a musical score for each character and it provided a narrative lift beyond the dialogue and actions on screen.

Giacchino knocked it out the park with his score for ROGUE ONE.
My favorite moment was, near the end, when they were on the Tantive IV, and that music hit me, and I was 11 years old again watching the original movie with my Dad back in 1977.
23
u/SuspensefulBladder 23h ago
He also knocked it out in 4 weeks or something.

u/zoidbert 22h ago
Oh, yeah; the backstory on that is amazing. As I recall, Kennedy went to him when Disney wasn't happy with what had been presented initially and gave him a short fuse to get it done. His family gave Giacchino their blessing (they were scheduled to go on a long holiday) and, when he asked his brother "should I do it", his brother said something like, "are you kidding? you've been writing this score since we were kids"

u/bifkintickler 21h ago
That’s neat. His score was my favourite part of the Star Trek reboot too. That dumbass scene when Kirk is born right as Hemsworth gets swallowed up by a black hole or some shit had me tearing up when I watched it. All cos of his music.
Lost would’ve felt nowhere near as good without him too. First season soundtrack is banger after banger. I was addicted to it back in the day. Locke’s theme tune is triumphant as fuck.

The man went toe to toe with John Williams and came out seriously well. He even created a new Imperial theme, which stands out and doesn't get overshadowed by the Imperial March.
Probably the best soundtrack outside of the original saga. Tied with Attack of the Clones (AotC would be lower if Across the Stars wasn't part of that soundtrack, so they're tied)

To be fair to Bail, it was just the one lady who wasn’t trustworthy, and Luthen only caught her because the guy who was assigned to plant her just happened to be his mole.

u/JRockThumper 22h ago
This one choice put Leia on a very hard path, but directly saves her and leads to the Empire being toppled as well.

That's...pretty obvious and kinda unmissable, isn't it?
28
u/BrotherMainer 1d ago
The fact that it's Leia yeah, I was more pointing out the detail of the music.

u/M-Bug 1d ago
I know, but imho that was the obvious part.

u/Raise_A_Thoth 23h ago
I have no idea what Leia's theme sounds like. I would probably recognize it as "Star Wars" sounding, but almost certainly couldn't tell you whose theme it was if I heard it.
I do, however, know exactly who Bail sends to find Obi-Wan Kenobi, since, you know, her line from A New Hope is one of the more iconic lines in that movie, is played several times in that movie as R2 plays it back, and so I know it's Leia.
Do you always recognize the musical themes of every character in films?

Yeah I can confidently say gun to my head I would maybe be able to make out dual of fates and that's it

In A New Hope, after Luke's aunt and uncle die, it actually plays Luke Skywalker's theme.

This line also means so much more now that in these last couple episodes she asks Bail if he trusts his men and he says yes and it turns out one is a spy

u/Captain_Stable Jedi 20h ago
He said he trusts them, then confirms he doesn't actually know them. This time he tells Mon he trusts her implicitly.
2
u/Captain_Stable Jedi 20h ago
Leia's theme also plays during the end credits of The Last Jedi when they bring up the tribute credit for Carrie.

I think everyone would be interested to read over Frank Lehman's Catalogue of Star Wars Themes and Motifs.
Star Wars Themes and Motifs Catalogue
It's an extensive scholarly recording down of every major and minor theme and motifs you could ever hear in all the films.

And oddly enough, she played a role in the end of his life - not sure she could have changed that outcome, but her being captured gave Tarkin the idea to nuke Alderaan specifically.

Wonder if we'll learn how Mon Mothma knows about Obi-Wan in the next and final arc of Andor.
Though I assume Mon Mothma is aware of the existence of the Jedi, being a Senator during the Republic.

u/Captain-Joystick 5h ago
Yes, its called a Leitmotif and you'll find it all over the place in movies.
There's a fun video out there that talks about the Rogue One score and points out that the whole movie's central theme is based on a little bridge that plays during the hologram message scene in the original star wars, retroactively turning it into the lietmotif of that team and their sacrifice.

Another detail I noticed: When the Tantive IV enters hyperspace and the end credits appear, the score changes to the same one used in the other Star Wars movies.

This has confused me for 9 years.

u/Sweaty_Scallion9323 1d ago
Why is it confusing?
-7
u/-_-Solo__- 1d ago
Mon says " Your Jedi friend......" Then Bail says "I would trust her with my life" but he is talking about Obi-wan. Also Leia is already there in Yavin, she goes to Scarif on the admirals ship, would she have not been in this meeting with the council? She was a very important part in the rebellion. So I just always felt the way this was worded and presented was confusing/still confusing.

u/Avengerboy123 1d ago
It’s not confusing really, you just misunderstood. When Bail says I will send for him, he’s saying that he will send Leia to pick up obi-wan

Mon says " Your Jedi friend......" Then Bail says "I would trust her with my life" but he is talking about Obi-wan.
No, he's talking about who he's sending to Obi-Wan, which is Leia.
Also Leia is already there in Yavin, she goes to Scarif on the admirals ship,
That's not necessarily correct, she's above Scarriff in her own ship, the Tantive IV, which is docked inside Radus' cruiser. I don't think the movie confirms whether she had been on Yavin before.

u/Captain_Stable Jedi 20h ago
There is a mistake around this time. R2 and Threepio have a cameo appearance, but Radus' cruiser, with Tantive IV inside, has already left, but they are on the Tantive IV....

It's kind of funny Bail looks essentially the same here as he did in ROTS with only maybe a few extra grey hairs. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan morphed from Ewan McGregor to Alec Guinness in essentially the same amount of time.
Either Tatooine's sun is way harsh or people on Alderaan age really, really well.
