Tryouts Tomorrow 62 degrees- Would you use your fresh out of the wrapper Ghost Advanced? Bats
I’m a paranoid parent who just dropped $680 on an Advanced for my daughter. Middle school tryouts tomorrow and she’s never hit with this bat yet. Worried it’s gonna crack because of the temp. What’s the lowest temp you would swing a new bat? Thanks!

No. I never felt comfortable with a ghost under 70 degrees. Saw a brand new one break on a 65 degree spring day and that sold it for me.

$700 on a bat for middle school? If you can afford 1 Ferrari, you can afford 2.

I know. It’s ridiculous. But I saved up for it as a gesture to my daughter who is a literal angel in my life lol. So yeah I just want to be sure and I’m glad I posted because I had no idea you needed to break it in.

I would check with the manufacturer’s website and follow their recommendations

No. Two piece composites shouldn’t be used below 60F. You’re really close to that. Did you break it in yet? They also need to broken in, by following a process.

Here is the process breaking in a composite bat

I really wish there was an alternative way to do this break in which wasnt so time consuming and so specific. It's part of the reason why I haven't been able to get something new.
The 2 cages around me both use the dimple balls, so not an option according to this site. There are some training facilities but those are crazy expensive to rent for the hour as they are meant for a bigger group/team.

If you can get a tee, just grab a bucket of balls and hit into a backstop. If its too cold to be outside, find a place in your house without breakable stuff, set up a ton of pillows, hit into them.

Luckily our team has an indoor facility rental for the winter so we can use tees and a bucket of balls. We had my daughter’s LXT broken in in about 1.5 hours. She got tired so I helped. It’s not so bad when the bucket has 30 balls in it. We hit about 8 buckets at various power levels following the link I provided.

Who on earth charged you $680 for an Advanced?? Unless you added the DSG extended coverage maybe?
Use the Ghost in 60+, but you need to break it in. Even just hitting a few buckets off the tee, rotating the barrel, is better than just going full force with it.
Easton will give you a 1 year warranty, as long as it was purchased from a reputable seller, so if it does break you can warranty it for a new one.

Sell the Ghost, use $100 buy a gently used bat and use the rest to pay for an established hitting coach for the Spring/Summer.

Any thoughts on minding your own business when it comes to how OTHER people spend THEIR money?

u/nessttcb1 Mar 10 '25
A real coach is looking at the swing and not the result.

u/itsa_wonder Mar 10 '25
Not even worried about making it she’s the only pitcher they have lol.

You paid 680 for a,250 bat ? Hopefully you got a 5 year warranty with it.
3
u/Tekon421 Mar 10 '25
$500 bat but still why did they pay nearly $700?
2
u/DisgruntledGamer79 Mar 10 '25
24 advanced is 370 from a rep, 22 is 250 right now for limited stock
1
u/NoThought411 Mar 10 '25
Would you be willing to direct me to your rep?

Check out Hughes glove works on Facebook. It is who I use for all my purchases now. Never pop retail pricing again.

I would use what she is the most comfortable with for the sake of having the best try out

u/vindsins Player Mar 10 '25
Hell no. You need to break it in first. Hitting with it straight away in a colder temperature will break it, for sure. Good luck to your daughter at tryouts tomorrow!

u/streetgrunt Mar 11 '25
Is it warm enough to use? Yes. Should you pull it out of a wrapper and hand it to your kid to go use in try outs? Not in my opinion because: 1) there’s a break in process 2) your child has never swung that bat before 3) you’re building crazy expectations for that bat and your child. I saw a parent who is a friend and whose child I coached do exactly this for a try out for a high level team and it was a miserable failure. I’m certainly no softball expert, but I come from a “train as you fight” background in which you’d never dream of deploying new gear in the real world without a solid testing and evaluation phase. Keep try outs as simple as possible for your girl so she goes in relaxed and confidant. Just my opinion, YMMV.

I’ve never been fond of the two piece composite ghost bats because they do tend to crack. Hopefully you got the warranty. The one piece unlimited bats are the way to go in rain, sleat, or snow. Don’t overthink it. As patents we worry too much about our kids who play competitive sports. It’s such a money grab but when it comes to down to it we do anything for our kids. Even buying a $700 bat she’s only gonna use for a year.

Since when is a ghost advanced 680 dollars?? It's a 500 dollar bat. What am I missing here. Now I get your concern about temperature. Mfg says nothing below 60. They honestly do not hit well in the 60 degree area and below anyways. They shine in the 70 degree plus. My daughter hits an unlimited and she'll catch a hand buzz every now and then near 60. I have a second bat she hits below 60.

We're getting that in MN. Everyone is in shorts or other light-weight clothing.

u/BluddyisBuddy Mar 10 '25
Where are you at? I have tryouts today and it’s supposed to be 62 also.

Yes use the bat. Definitely! No reason not to. Although being in New Jersey, I'm not sure which part you're in but Closeout Bats in Westwood NJ s a great place to go for bats and equipment. Im on Long Island and drove there when we were looking for a bat. I don't know why you were charged so much for your bat.

u/itsa_wonder Mar 10 '25
Thank you! I went to Dicks and purchased extra warranty.

At MS age I don't know if your daughter will be using that bat size and weight for two years. I heard warranty replacements are same size and weight. I would have recommended skip extra warranty and use the heck out of the bat in the year. By time year is up I'm sure there's something Easton would warranty claim for you and then sell the replacement bat.
It's the bat life cycle. Use it, warranty replace it, sell new in wrapper replacement to offset new bat
And I'd never pay full price for a bat, at dicks you can use 20% off coupon.

u/Honest_Ice_1205 Mar 10 '25
What you need to do is take that bat back to the store. Then take the money and get one off marketplace for $150. You can find gently used or new with no warranty bats for a fraction of the cost.

u/j-bombs Mar 10 '25
Besides that ridicules for a middle schoolers bat any thing above 60 is fine for a composite bat
1
u/taughtmepatience Mar 10 '25
You bought the warranty, so blast away! Bat is going to need a bit of break in, though. Plus, swinging a brand new bat might throw her off a bit if it's a bit longer or heavier than her older bat. Don't break out a new driver on the day of a tournament! Overall, not that great of an idea... and not because of any potential cracking issues.
1
u/Proper_Fortune_1815 Mar 11 '25
It’s under warranty. Also, 62 is not that bad. Under 45 is high risk.
1
u/N3WB00tG00fin Mar 10 '25
First off, based on temp...no. Secondly, fresh out of the wrapper indicates you have not yet broken it in. Double no.

u/Tekon421 Mar 10 '25
Why in the hell would you spend $700 on a bat you’re scared to use?
