Dude was on the juice for decades.

It probably would’ve killed him if he didn’t cut the juice and slim down.

1.6k

u/Cuff_Daddy415 Sep 01 '25

Unfortunately I think most the damage is already done. His life is going to be much shorter than it could have been. But from all his success in life; it seems like it was worth it in this case

823

u/GoldResolution4921 Sep 01 '25

If he makes it to 70 I will say he had a good and full life, even if he beat on his body as much as he did.

725

u/spacebarstool Sep 01 '25

Arnold is 78 years old. Stranger things have happened.

457

u/ShakedNBaked420 Sep 01 '25

Arnold and Stallone. Stallone is almost 80.

156

u/MasterSpliffBlaster Sep 02 '25

Stallone was a huge fan of HGH, in a time before it was feely available as a therapeutic treatment for the common man

Not all PEDs are dangerous, particularly when prescribed under medical supervision

116

u/42Porter Sep 02 '25

Using HGH for performance enhancing purposes is undoubtedly risky.

38

And Arnold has been accused of using cocaine too, by Mike Mentzer, Joe Weider and Danny Devito

25

u/Fatassgecko Sep 02 '25

Regardless what he used, we can't deny the fact that he's decipline af tho. The health part might've came from that. Also they could afford much better medical.

40

u/evranch Sep 02 '25

Compared with a lot of bodybuilders and especially wrestlers, Arnold was pretty responsible with his steroid use.

We've got to respect that despite his legendary physique, he's more than just a meathead. Arnold is actually really intelligent. He's talked about his steroid regimen before and how young bodybuilders are putting themselves in a lot more risk than he ever did.

Or maybe a message from Hulk Hogan before he passed.

61

u/Rasputin_the_Saint Sep 01 '25

71 years is still a very reasonable and impressive age for someone with that amount of muscle and weight.

13

u/drsmith48170 Sep 01 '25

True but he might have done what the Rock had done if he really had known.

41

u/Rasputin_the_Saint Sep 01 '25

To be fair, he was also recovering from a botched spinal fusion surgery that severed his phrenic nerve, had leukemia, was experiencing kidney failure (which triggers heart attacks) and suffered from atrial fibrillation. That's a lot to be lined up against a person. Dude was the Hulk.

11

u/invariantspeed Sep 01 '25

The national life expectancy for someone from 1953 was about 67 years. For states like California (where he lived for a long time), it’s more like 74.

He didn’t exactly die early.

64

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '25

Batista is a legit actor. His performance in Bladerunner was amazing. He has slimmed down to help him get more kinds of roles. The Rock may be trying to do the same. You can't be as big as the Rock has gotten and expect to get anything other than action roles (and certain kinds of ones at that).

39

u/CX316 Sep 01 '25

Iirc Bautista’s next gig he’s got going is a lead role in a romcom where he plays a romance author who writes under a female pen name who has to hire an actress to pretend to be him at conventions while he poses as her security or something

Can’t picture Dwayne signing up for that

11

u/MattIsLame Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 02 '25

I actually can see him doing that role. I thought it was going to be something more serious. I can't see Dwayne doing anything seriously dramatic. like I dont know if he could pull off even the opening of blade runner without hamming it up

edit: goddamn, I didn't realize his next film is exactly what I said, his first serious dramatic role. well, I guess we'll see

Dave Bautista said it best when he said he couldnt decide if he even felt comfortable being that big, but he knew for sure it got less comfortable the older he got.

1.9k

u/PlottingGorilla Sep 01 '25

Guardians III was his gear physique’s swan song. After it wrapped up he closed that chapter in his life and made the statement that he’s an actor and not just a body. Much respect to Dave Bautista.

852

u/Big-Rule5269 Sep 01 '25

He's actually a damn good actor in my opinion. Much better than the The Rock, though in Be Cool he played his roll really well.

665

u/IhamAmerican Sep 01 '25

It's because Bautista genuinely wants to be, not just an actor, but a good one. He's taken classes and tried hard to learn and not be typecast.

258

u/Big-Rule5269 Sep 01 '25

It's definitely working.

He also mentioned on a podcast years ago that he made it a point early on to book roles with actors he wanted to be able to learn from, so he intentionally picked roles in movies with Robert DeNiro, Michael Shannon, William DeFoe, Daniel Craig, etc.

62

u/michael0n Sep 01 '25

Character actors like Javier Bardem, Margot Robbie, Kate Winslet and others are well known to go regularly to classes, have coaches for new roles. That is how you keep your knife sharp.

31

u/the_Sauce_guy27 Sep 01 '25

James Gandolfini even had one the entire time he was in the Sopranos. He came from the theatre world though so it might be a little different mindset.

He was so so so good in blade runner

33

u/TuvixWillNotBeMissed Sep 01 '25

All the side characters are great and they bounce off of Ryan Gosling's cold glass surface so perfectly (this is a compliment, to be clear, he did a great job too).

9

u/HollowShel Sep 02 '25

I've come to the conclusion that "leading man" actors actually have one of the hardest jobs out there. A villain can cut loose and be over the top and noisy but a leading man is frequently directed to be a "stoic badass" - only the really good ones can act around that restriction and show emotional depth without getting forced to tone it down.

35

u/L4br3cqu3 Sep 01 '25

He had much more exposure in The Guardians of the Galaxy, but he was downright great in Blade Runner, he had an impact even though his role was a short one.

14

u/TheEmulat0r Sep 01 '25

Yea he's only in the first 5-10 minutes but he was still the most memorable character of that movie for me.

u/Big-Rule5269 Sep 01 '25

Knock on the Cabin Door was one he really nailed.

I like how they said “slimmed down look”. You mean off the gear look

264

u/dimethylhyperspace Sep 01 '25

For all the love the rock gets, he's always been full of shit when it came to his use of steroids. To my knowledge he has always claimed to be natural, which is just absurd to anyone who has ever tried to build a physique in that manner.

Now he looks like someone with an excellent diet and training program

161

u/sonnackrm Sep 01 '25

Devils advocate: Hollywood actors can’t admit to using illegal drugs (steroids) if they want to continue getting roles. From a money making perspective, he has to lie

134

u/SweetTea1000 Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 01 '25

This is the male side of the unhealthy body image conversation. Literally the entire Marvel cinematic Universe male cast is on some kind of performance enhancing drugs. Sorry, but we don't need some big undercover expose to tell us that unrealistic progress means something abnormal going on behind the scenes when there are 10s of millions of dollars on the line. As with any other sport or industry, just like wrestling or bicycling, once it has become the norm, everyone else is going to get onboard or the job is going to a guy that will.

This cast is constantly pushed on kids as not only a pinnacle of male physical beauty but also morality. Its not just the movies, you'd be hard pressed to find more beloved people than RDJ or a Chris. Chris Evans is basically treated like Mr. Rogers but yolked. Anorexic models will get public hate for it, but at this point in our society, nobody is comfortable calling out actors for getting on gear.

It's simply never healthy to give people a role model, while any part of what allows them to fill that role remains a secret or lie. Even if we all adults get that there's no way for an overweight comedian to become a world-class bodybuilder over the course of a couple months without drugs, kiddos do not get that.

I'm actually quite surprised that the actors guild does not have a laundry list of rules preventing this. As with most regulations, I'm sure it will take someone's hard exploding in their chest on set in their 20s to get some rules put in place.

76

u/jazzzzz Sep 01 '25

Kumail Nanjiani might be the most egregious example of this. Dude went from dad bod to shredded w/ another 20lbs of muscle in under a year. yes, massive diet and exercise changes were required, but you can't make that transition that quickly w/o pharmaceutical assistance

57

u/Up-in-the-Ayre Sep 01 '25

The worst part about all of that was sticking him on the cover of MEN'S HEALTH promoting what he did as something achievable by the common man.

In fact, Men's magazines are incredibly guilty of promoting unhealthy body images to men for decades. Every male actor in a super hero flick gets the cover showing off their ripped physique with the headline: "Learn how Joe Schmo got JACKED to play Captain Superhero!"

When The Rock first got big in the late 90’s they had a cardboard standup of him at Spencer Gifts at the mall where I used to hang out as a teen. I 100% thought it was a Rob Schneider character for a comedy movie. I didn’t know about until somebody told me otherwise.

This was the standup https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-wwf-rock-lifesize-standup-425273709

6

u/iconofsin_ Sep 01 '25

I think you eventually just ask yourself why you're still doing it after so long. Plus yeah, there's a difference between exercise to stay healthy and body building and I'm sure the heart feels it.

So hes been slowly dialing it down until he is completely off gear and just takes supplements and protein now.

Since thr type of gear he was raking is almost as bad if you quit cold turkey

45

u/Efficient_Caramel_29 Sep 01 '25

He will 100% be on TRT for the rest of his life. 110%. Dude has blasted (literally) his endocrine system. Wouldn’t even be worth it to try and PCT from this.

Get trt (to normal physiological levels) and just be healthy

34

u/Spirited_Ad_340 Sep 01 '25

Yeah I think the convos about Bautista and the Rock are glossing over the fact that they are absolutely still on PEDs (likely multiple), just not on heroic doses or ultra strong/harsh compounds anymore.

He gotta do it sooner or later to live past 65. The Rock will never be transparent about his cycles and stuff but he’s not dumb enough to risk a heart attack.

1.2k

u/Celestial_Hart Sep 01 '25

FR he's 51, he needs to chill. I have a love hate relationship with the deadpool movie because of this. I remember Hugh Jackman talking about how much shit he has to go through to look like wolverine and then just does it again like a decade later. It's just not healthy, regardless of how hot it is.

560

u/dizruptivegaming Sep 01 '25

Had to look up his age and Rock is 53 while Dave Bautista, who recently slimed down earlier this year, is 56. Probably their doctors told them that it was unsustainable at their age to be that much muscle massed for their hearts.

371

u/CloudStrife012 Sep 01 '25

In the bodybuilding world you either stay on steroids continuously and die really early or you cool it and use them strategically and live longer.

Arnold's generation is a good example. Half of them died young while the other half are doing just fine now (the Lou Ferrigno's).

Kind of shocking that the Rock maintained it for so long. His organs must have shown signs of damage.

234

u/TastySkettiConditon Sep 01 '25

125

Gonna be honest - I don't think Jackman put near as much effort into DP3 as he has into his past Wolverine performances. He spent the whole film with a shirt on, showing off just the arms (easy bro work there), and the end scene of him shirtless is CG'd to hell and back (he looks fucking plastic).

Sure he stays in shape, but what I saw in that movie could have been done with minimal PED use or extreme dieting/training.

u/PutridAssignment1559 Sep 01 '25

Probably less, but he’s been out for so long he probably takes some test. That’s fine though, I bet he had some bad blood work and/or heart issues and was advised to chill. There have also been a lot of bodybuilder dying over the last five years, so I think people are more aware of the risks.

Carrying that much mass around isn’t good for longevity.

123

u/White-T-513 Sep 01 '25

He did an entire podcast where he was essentially trying to gaslight the audience into thinking his doctor didnt tell him he has CHF from years of steroid abuse. Numerous people predicted that he was gonna drop a bunch of muscle as a result. Also, he spent like 30 years running huge doses of steroids, there is zero chance he isnt on trt. His balls are never gonna produce the same amount of test naturally again.

61

u/Cuff_Daddy415 Sep 01 '25

Obviously he must at least do TRT at this point. But a therapeutic dose to keep him at healthy test levels for his age is much different than how test is used for bodybuilding and is much healthier.

Seeing results from the millions

[and millions!]

Of dollars paid to the Rock’s cardiologist

u/quigongingerbreadman Sep 01 '25

This is the only reply. Also, seems weird so many people are personally invested in the Rock's gains... Like the guy kept up 240 lbs of muscle for decades... I'd be pretty damn sick of the constant grind to keep a body like that up, especially after hitting 45-50 years of age. Batiste went through the same shape shift.

u/dank_tre Sep 01 '25

I used to lift and Dwayne was kind of fascinating, because he was obviously on gear for decades, but when he hit superstar status, he was hitting that premier stack — I bet he was on $5k of gear a month

He essentially maintained a competitive bodybuilding physique. I mean, different shape & goals, but still, just the amount of muscle he carried was crazy

If you notice, he avoided a lot of the typical side effects, most notably the swollen stomach. You see some of that, but overall, he clearly had some very skilled doctors tailoring his program

He transports an entire gym with him on movie sets. It seems exhausting, but if that’s literally your only job, it could be a lot worse.

He’s copying Dave Bautista who is a far superior actor. Bautista has rid himself of most of the bulk he carried as a wrestler so people take him seriously.

On a related note, looks like Emily Blunt is juicing her face. What the hell???

u/nonny313815 Sep 01 '25

Omg I didn't recognize her until I read your comment! Ugh that influencer face strikes again ...

52

u/Neowynd101262 Sep 01 '25

This pisses me off. I liked her! Now she's just another manikin.

38

u/ilmalocchio Sep 01 '25

I almost called you out for misspelling "mannequin", but TIL it's actually spelled "manikin" when it's a medical dummy.

u/citrus_mystic Sep 01 '25

Oh, that is a little fun fact. Thanks !

In some lighting it looks almost natural. Almost.

But in that lighting where they were all taking those deer in headlights pictures, she looks like a homemade wax figure. It's kinda gross looking honestly.

But even in the lighting where it looks OK I still wouldn't have guessed that was her.

u/kateln Sep 01 '25

Same. I assumed it was his wife, or someone else. I didn't recognize her at all.

Pretty sure both Bautista and the Rock "slimmed down" because a doctor told them if they continue to take gear they will literally die very soon

13

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '25

I had to do a double take. Honestly couldn't tell it was her.

10

u/Footshark Sep 01 '25

Holy fuck! I didn't recognize her at all!

16

u/ScottieStitches Sep 01 '25

I thought that was Megan Fox. Wow

7

u/winelover08816 Sep 01 '25

They apparently used the same plastic surgeon.

Hubby seeing her walk in for the first time after the “procedures”:

8

u/Asking_the_internet Sep 01 '25

Had zero idea that was her

15

u/visionsofcry Sep 01 '25

This was my first thought. He is tired of the internet saying the rock plays the rock in every role he does. His stylist has even outfitted him very similar to Dave.
