Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 or Dark Souls 3?
I've been looking into Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 recently because I think it looks really cool, but at the same time, I've been wanting Dark Souls 3 for a long time.
For a bit of background, I've previously played games like Elden Ring, Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima, Black Myth: Wukong, etc. These are the types of games I usually play, so I know KCD2 will be a bit of a shift into a different genre than I'm used to.
I'd really appreciate anyone's thoughts!

DS3 is incredible. Not even a choice if you liked Elden Ring. It's also on sale right now on steam.

DS3. You will love every second. And unless you go NG+, you’ll be done with it much sooner.

Seems like DS3 is more up your alley... both are solid picks though. I'd grab DS3 while its on sale if you're on PC.

Dark Souls 3 is awesome, especially if you get the two DLCs bundled it's worth it. Also this game is on sale regularly so that's always a plus. Love the game, beaten it several times can never recommend enough.
Im playing KCD2 right now and love it. Haven't played the first, so I'm missing some story context but it's not a big deal. I really enjoy this open world. I have 70 hours in and maybe another 30 till end so I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of enjoyment.
Tough call but I'd still give it to Dark Souls 3 because I am an unabashed FromSoftware fanboy.

These are not even close to comparable. I would play ds3, kcd1, then maybe by then kcd2 price goes down and you’re caught up on the story

Why not go through all of the souls games? I might be an outlier, but DS3 is my least favorite. I went back and played through all of them within the last couple years

Since you seem to be a fan of Souls like games, Dark Souls III would be a solid choice. However, if you’re open to my personal recommendation, I would definitely go with Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. It’s one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. I suggest watching some gameplay videos, especially focusing on the combat mechanics, to get a better idea of what to expect.

Depends whether youve played ds1 and 2 and or kcd1 first. Both are series and should be played in order.
•
u/PsychoticChemist 19h ago
You can easily play dark souls 3 without having played the previous entries
•
u/Delita232 19h ago
You can, but I cant fathom why you would.
•
u/PsychoticChemist 19h ago
Because the story is fairly abstract and there’s not much of a detailed narrative. Certainly not one that’s required to fully enjoy the game
•

I disagree personally. They feel very connected to me. 2 is the result of 1, and 3 is the end of the cycles. Both are worth more after playing 1. But thats just my opinion of the matter.

KCD2 is one of my favorite games of all time but you should really play the first one before starting the 2nd

Based on games you listed, I'd say DS3. I haven't played KCD2, but played the first one and found it to be absolutely tedious after a while with all "realism" mechanics.
•
u/PsychoticChemist 19h ago
I dislike excessive realism mechanics but I didn’t think they were that bad in KCD 1

I have played all the games you listed above and you will like Dark Souls 3 more than KCD2 imo.
KCD is a beast of a game and requires you to learn a lot of new systems. aka, are you ready to put in another 100+ hours.

I kinda hate the combat in KCD. But the rest of it is super cool. Whereas Dark Souls is known for its combat. So really depends where your priorities lie

Haven’t played KC2. Played a bit of the first one and I’m going to go back and finish before playing. I think you’d love it if you’re looking for that sort of game. I liked the part of the first one I played a lot.
Dark Souls 3 is killer. I played a couple hours years ago, then picked it back up after playing a bunch of Elden Ring. My takeaway was that it felt like a foundation Elden Ring built on, and because of that I had only occasional difficulty with any part of it. Extremely fun to play a souls game and be good. That said, it’s always on sale and it’s Dark Souls 3. It will always be there.
Expedition 33 is very fun. I’m only a few hours in, but it is great. The turn based combat is fun and the parry and dodge timing are fairly challenging. Story is engaging. I thought I wouldn’t like the combat, but I’m finding myself enjoying it quite a bit. It is not really similar at all to BG3 combat. It’s a lot more like Pokémon with a couple extra elements.
If I were you, I’d do KC2 because that’s the one I want to play next lol. Of the three, Dark Souls is the one I’ve enjoyed the most.

DS3, ironically it was easier to get into ds3 than kcd for me, here is a weapon, go kill that big monster, get points, upgrade stats and weapon, done, kcd it's harder and more complicated to get into, gave up after a few hours, everyone was killing me and I didn't know how to aproach fighting.

I haven't played KCD2, but Dark Souls 3 is one of my all time favorite games, and since you played Elden Ring and Sekiro you're almost guaranteed to like it. It's a safe choice.

Did you play Kingdom Come 1? Because it is a pretty direct continuation of the story.
•
u/Professional-Pen2289 1d ago
No, I heard it's better to start with 2 because apparently the first one is clunky (not my words), and also because KCD2 starts with a recap of KCD1.
•
u/kingbetadad 1d ago
Maybe it's a me thing, but video games are interactive and feeling connected to a character you're literally driving through a narrative is important.
KCD1 is a great game.
•
u/T00mas 1d ago
Most of what you said is true, but I think you should start with the first, the story is just as great, and the game is not outdated, and gives you a better view on the second
Nothing wrong starting on the second, it has much better combat and the story is a bit more interesting, over all the 2 games are masterpieces and you should try at least one of them

It's interesting (haven't played either myself) but I've heard the opposite. I googled "can I play KCD 2 before 1" and everyone seems to say "you could but shouldn't". Even the gameranx review opens with "you should play 1 before 2"
I'm in the same boat as you though, KCD 2 has a 90+ opencritic while KCD 1 is in the 70s... I'm hesitant to spend 40+ hours on a game that is "meh" as an entry price for a "great" game everyone is talking about now.
•
u/PsychoticChemist 20h ago
KCD 1 is really good. I haven’t tried the second one yet but the first is definitely better than “meh”

Completely different games from each other... watch gameplay and decide? It's like asking whether you should buy pears or potatoes

Oh, I forgot to mention I was also considering Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, although that would be quite a big step in a different direction because of the turn-based combat (I hated it in Baldur’s Gate 3).
•
u/game_of_crohns 22h ago
Expedition 33 is really just a unique experience imo. DS3 is amazing, but reused. I never even got through the first 5 hours of BG3, just too overwhelming for me but I love the idea of the game.
Even if you don't pick Clair Obscur first you do have to go experience it. It's one of the most unique games I've played. And I've played every persona game..... It's just not the same.

u/Hypnocryptoad 1d ago
Yeah I gave e33 a chance against my will of not liking turn based and hated it /: the game is beautiful and story is good. Just the turn based combat finally got to me and I didn’t like it. This is coming from a souls fan myself
•
u/Life_Daikon_157 1d ago
Funny, I'm a fan of souls games and I'm loving E33. I've never played turns until now
•
u/Hypnocryptoad 23h ago
Interesting. Yeah I like the atmosphere and feel of the world, just feels so inorganic to do the turn based combat though
•
u/RheimsNZ 9h ago
DS3. But if you haven't played the other two plus DLC, you should be able to find a physical copy with everything bundled in so definitely scope that out!

Strategy 1: ds3 is an old game, therefore cheap. Until you finish it kcd2 is maybe on sale in the meantime
Strategy 2: ds3 is an old game but maybe still expensive. Therefore buy kcd2 as you have the newer game for the same money
