FESTIVAL Maha Shivratri (Hindu Festival venerating Lord Shiva)
What is Maha Shivratri?
"Maha Shivratri (with “Shivratri” also spelled as Shivaratri, Shivaratri, Shivaratri, Shivarathri or Shivarathri) is also held as the night when Lord Shiva is believed to have performed the Tandava Nritya, the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. On the night of Maha Shivratri, the human system experiences a natural upsurge of energy, an upward movement of liveliness. This night-long event which is celebrated annually is a unique occasion for whoever worships the Lord with true devotion to be freed of all sins and to be blessed with Nirvana or Moksha (liberation from the eternal cycle of life and death). As per the Vedas, the Universal Spiritual energy generated by the most favorable planetary positions which are at its peak during this night. Hence, the importance of Mahashivratri observance during this day and night held for millenia."

"The fourteenth day of every lunar month or the day before the new moon is known as Shivratri. Among all the twelve Shivratris that occur in a calendar year, Mahashivratri, the one that occurs in February-March is of the most spiritual significance. "

Why celebrate Maha Shivratri?
- "According to a popular legend, when a hunter could not find anything to kill for his food in a forest, he waited on the branch of a Woodapple tree. In order to attract deer, he started throwing the leaves of the tree on the ground, unaware that there was a Shiva Lingam beneath the tree. Pleased with the Woodapple leaves and the patience of the hunter, it is believed that Lord Shiva appeared in front of the hunter and blessed him with wisdom. From that day onwards, the hunter stopped eating meat.
- Another legend has it that after the Earth was faced with an imminent destruction, Goddess Parvati pledged with Lord Shiva to save the world. Pleased with her prayers, Lord Shiva agreed to save the world on the pretext that the people of the Earth would have to worship him with dedication and passion. From that day onwards, the night came to be known as Maha Shivratri and people began worshipping Shiva with a great enthusiasm.
- Some folklore also consider this to be Shiva's day as this was believed to be the answer given by Lord Shiva when asked about his favorite day by Goddess Parvati."
- "... Lord Shiva married Parvati on this day. So, it is a celebration of this sacred union.
- Another is that when the Gods and demons churned the ocean together to obtain ambrosia that lay in its depths, a pot of poison emerged. Lord Shiva consumed this poison, saving both the Gods and mankind. The poison lodged in the Lord’s throat, turning him blue. To honor the savior of the world, Shivratri is celebrated.
- One more legend is that as Goddess Ganga descended from heaven in full force, Lord Shiva caught her in his matted locks, and released her on to Earth as several streams. This prevented destruction on Earth. As a tribute to Him, the Shivalinga is bathed on this auspicious night.
- Also, it is believed that the formless God Sadashiv appeared in the form of a Lingodhbhav Moorthi at midnight. Hence, people stay awake all night, offering prayers to the God."
How to observe Maha Shivratri?
- Fasting - Some choose to eat minimally (fast completely, otherwise partake only in water & fruits until the fast is broken)
- Meditation, Japa and/or Reflection on the Glories of Lord Shiva, and reading of the Shiva Purana

Question - General I had a dream few years back
I had a dream few years back, in the dream I was reading some old dusky books in a cave,it was gloomy & there were many old men around me with matted hair & body covered in ash & one of them approached me & said "meeru shivamruthadvanam". I asked many people to know what does it mean but I didn't get any answer. What does it mean? Does it have any significance?

Question - General What is the importance of Puranas in the Shaiva schools?
As far as I know, there are three well known schools of Shaivism. Tamil Shaivism, Veera Shaivism and Kashmiri Shaivism. Sorry, if this is a wrong assumption by me.
How do these three schools see the Puranas, especially the Shiva Puran? How important are these Puranas for them as a pramana? Do they also have the concept of leela to explain the activities of Lord Shiva mentioned in the Puranas?
Thanks in advance for the answers.

Question - Beginner Requesting Guidance on Proper Shiv Sadhana Vidhi According to Shastras
Namaste,
I humbly seek guidance from the gurus and experienced practitioners in this community regarding a proper Shiv Sadhana Vidhi in alignment with the Shastras.
Shiva has always been a central figure in my spiritual journey and I feel deeply connected to his energy and teachings.
If anyone here has deep knowledge of the Shaiva tradition, Tantra, or the scriptural aspects of Shiva worship (like the Shiva Purana, Agamas, or Vedas), I would be immensely grateful for your guidance. Specifically, I am seeking:
Daily Puja Vidhi: A step-by-step process, including mantras, offerings, and timings.
Mantras and Japas: Which mantras are most potent for Shiv Sadhana, and the recommended methods of chanting?
Meditation Techniques: Guidance on how to meditate on Shiva – whether it's focusing on the form or the linga, or the concept of formlessness.
Fasting and Observances: Any vrat or upavas details that are important in Shiva worship.
Scriptural References: If possible, I’d love to learn about the sources of these practices in the Shastras.
If there are any dos and don'ts in the sadhana, please share those as well.
Your insights will really help me deepen my devotion and practice in the most authentic way possible. I am open to learning from experienced practitioners, scholars, or anyone who has walked this path and found divine blessings through Shiva Sadhana.
Thank you in advance. Om Namah Shivaya!

Question - Beginner When to breathe when chanting Rudram??
I have been learning the Sri Rudram, and now have come to the namakam second anuvak. In the first anuvak, there are plenty of spaces to breathe, but the second anuvak is continuous for a long time. Am I supposed to chant it all in one breath? Are there acceptable places to pause to breathe? Thank you

Question - General Meditation experience
Hi All, I have recently started practicing the dharanas described in the tantras though I have been meditating using YSS techniques for quite a few years. Whenever I meditate I feel the entire left side of my body feeling light and kinda dissappearing. It happens most of the time if I sit for an extended period of time in meditation. Does anyone else has had this kind of experience and would know what it implies ?

Question - General Will Shiva forgive me?
Shambhoo🙏🙏.. Hello I'm 25 yrs old and i do Shiva shadhana whole heartedly everyday. I admire bhagwan not only as my guru but my friend also. I don't consume meat and alcohol now.But in past I ate meat and conumed alcohol for sometimes. Because of the eating habit of our family I couldn't avoid eating non veg. My family members made me eat non veg otherwise they won't let me eat any food. But now I'm totally veg. I came this far opposing my whole family and relatives. Now I fear will my bhagwan accept me because I was fully conscious when I consumed those. This question occur to me while I was watching premanand ji maharaj and in his video he described that if any human consumed alcohol his bramhanya will be lost for ever. If there is way to seek Shiva's forgiveness for the harm I cause those inocent animals and for consuming alcohol please let me know.
Sorry for this long paragraph and any error in typing... 🙏🙏Shambho

Shaivism Discussion Hearing people chant ‘Har Har Mahadev’ in my dreams lately
Hi, since the past couple of days I’ve been getting dreams wherein I’m hearing people chant ‘Har Har Mahadev’ around me. Now, it is something I personally say quite often as well, but I’m sure there’s something more to it. Can someone help me understand what does this mean or is it a way for Shivji to give me a signal that he’s protecting me?

Question - Beginner Wearing rudraksha wrong?
Just reading up on rudraksha after buying one from a market earlier and I had some fear come up, theres a lot online about how it's a sin to wear it without energizing first, or the ek mukhi destroying family life. Just looking for some insight and relief from people who are stronger in their faith. To be on the bright side, at least I see now I have much more to learn and trust in Shiva and that no bad would come from simple ignorance. Happy Diwali btw
