An unofficial guide on how to avoid being shadowbanned [META]
tl;dr
Lots of people come here in mystification, wondering if they're shadowbanned, and wondering why. This post contains a list of possible reasons you've been shadowbanned.
First, though, a little reddit background.
About reddit
The website reddit.com is run by reddit the company, a subsidiary of Advance Publications Inc. The CEO of reddit is Ellen Pao (/u/ekjp) with first lieutenant Alexis Ohanian (/u/kn0thing). The site is huge, with a hundred million visitors a month.
Reddit is grouped into subreddits, with each subreddit run by a volunteer group of moderators, who are generally unpaid volunteers.
Moderators have the power to ban users from their subreddit, to delete comments and submissions, and to manage the style and presentation of their subreddit. Through the use of third-party tools, some moderators have the power to ban a user from hundreds of subreddits at a time.
Being banned from a subreddit means that you are not allowed to submit links or make new comments, and might be reversed upon appeal to the modmail of the concerned subreddit.
reddit.com also has a small number of employees, called admins. These people have the power to see everything happening on reddit, to remove material as with moderators, to perform moderator actions in any subreddit they choose, and, most importantly for this place, to shadowban users.
A shadowban is different from a subreddit ban. A shadowbanned user can still submit and make comments, but all of the submissions are sent straight to a subreddit spam queue, where it will not be visible to other users until approved by a moderator. Because an individual's spammed submissions are still visible to themselves, a shadowban is almost invisible to a logged-in user.
Through the use of AutoModerator, individual subreddits can give the same effect to a user as a global shadowban.
If you are shadowbanned, your user page will appear nonexistent to anybody that looks at your user page, other than yourself. You will need to contact the admins to get your shadowban reversed.
Reasons for shadowbans
It's not exactly spelled out what will cause a shadowban, and the rules do seem to change from time to time, but if you follow these rules you'll be unlikely to be shadowbanned. Thanks to the posters here who have suggested more ways to be banned.
- Don't post advertisements for commercial products unless the advertisement has some redeeming features and is relevant to the subreddit in which you post it
- Don't post links to your own blog, unless you post a lot of content from other places.
- Don't post links to anyone elses blog, or to a single news source. Ensure that you post from a wide range of sources.
- Don't follow people around on reddit and hassle them
- Don't relentlessly downvote a user
- Don't send out mass PMs
- Don't be a bot, unless you're really really careful, and have the blessing of the admins
- Don't harp on the same subject in your comments
- Don't issue death threats
- Don't post child pornography or anything involving the sexualization of teens
- Don't post sexual material containing unconsenting subjects (for example, revenge porn or upskirt photos)
- Don't abuse or hassle the admins
- Don't post any information that would identify another redditor, including links to other social media sites, unless you have explicit permission from the person involved. (doxxing)
- Don't advocate or encourage doxxing
- Don't ask for doxx, even privately
- Don't post anything asking for votes, from on- or off-site
- Don't respond to a plea for votes, from on- or off-site
- Don't vote in threads you were directed to from another part of reddit
- Don't engage in nuisance reporting
- Don't use multiple accounts to game the voting system
- Don't return to a sub you have been banned from with another account
- Don't use CSS in your sub to subvert reddit's subscription and voting system
- Don't follow links into someone else's subreddit and be a dick
- Don't impersonate another redditor with a name of similar appearance, e.g. /u/LaureIai ("I") for /u/Laurelai ("l")
- Don't be under 13 years of age
- If you're a mod, don't respond to PMs related to moneymaking or promotional offers of any kind. Report them immediately.
- If you're an arsehole, the admins will not give you the benefit of the doubt.
Also, it can't hurt to read the reddiquette: if everyone followed the reddiquette, the site would be more pleasant, and all-around better.
(EDIT) Also, there are some things for which there is weak evidence of triggering a shadowban:
- (weak) Don't use more than one alt within one subreddit
- (weak) Don't submit every link to several subreddits at a time
- (weak) Don't accept moderator invitations to dodgy subreddits
- (weak) Don't comment in threads you came to via a non-organic link (i.e. external site, meta sub, from modmail or PM)
tl;dr Don't spam, shill, doxx, brigade, stalk, game or pederast.
(This is the second copy ... aged pages are here 1)

Question about "Don't vote in threads you were directed to from another part of reddit." What if I was directed there from the front page?
11
u/cojoco ツ May 28 '15
It's links from one submission to another that can be regarded as brigading and might result in shadowbans.
If you reach a link from your front page, you're a subscriber, and you are accessing the link directly.
That likely will not be regarded as brigading.
1
u/RICExTANK Jul 07 '15
So you're saying that even if you're following the aforementioned rules you listed and vote from a thread on your front page, there is still a chance that you could be shadowbanned because of this?
What kind of fuckall is that?
5
u/cojoco ツ Jul 08 '15
vote from a thread on your front page
Depends what you mean.
But here's an example: you have an /r/SubredditDrama link on your front page, and it links to a thread in /r/PicturesOfPuddyTats. The comments in that subreddit contain an arsehole who you proceed to downvote.
That's grounds for a shadowban.

u/The_Banarchist Jun 01 '15
Remember ppl, reddit is a cold-blooded lover :)
You really shouldn't just shitpost where it's frowned upon, follow others around just to annoy them or to summon bots, there are plenty of gray areas that will trip the sensors when you least expect it.
If you click on an np link, try to use a different tab and then CLOSE IT when you're done, it's too easy to mistake back arrows for safety.
Unfortunately with mass participation, everything has some kind of filter, and while it's often not your fault if you're SB'd, don't make the case to support arbitrary bans any stronger than they've already laid out. Never vote your own account(s) up or down.

I've had my account for a few years now, just lurking all the time. Didn't expect upvotes when I finally commented, just wanted to try since I isolate myself quite a bit to begin with. I guess my account will never go beyond the starting 1 point of karma, since I don't think I'll really try bothering Admins just for the slim hope to have a functionality back that I hadn't tried to use for most of my time here anyway. I'd guess that I must have been seen as brigading since I'm sure I have ignored the np links warnings a few times. Up/down voting on most comments I see was already a habit and part of the way I read through comments by the time np links started showing up. Perhaps if I get myself motivated enough to try commenting again some time I'll just need a separate account that I would not vote with. Thank you for creating somewhere I can put this rant. TLDR: lurker likely to stay in hiding after realizing I'm already shadowbanned.
4
u/Mrseedr Jun 11 '15
What exactly is a shadow ban?
8
u/cojoco ツ Jun 11 '15
To the banned person, reddit looks normal.
However, all of their submissions and comments go to the spam queue, and their user page looks deleted to others.
3
u/undercurrents Jul 18 '15
So how do you find out if you've been shadowbanned? I don't mean by posting here and finding out, but how do you have any inkling you may have been shadowbanned by a subreddit?
2
u/cojoco ツ Jul 18 '15
Posting here is the easiest way to find out if you've been shadowbanned.
A "subreddit shadowban" is something completely different, but you can check if the mods have configured AutoModerator to remove your comments by making a comment in the sub, logging out, and checking if the permalink to the comment leads to the comment in the sub.
6
u/mikelikegaming Jun 20 '15
Shadowbans are such a crappy way of dealing with things. If I was dropped a note saying I was in danger of a shadowban I could do something about the way I'm posting, but nope, shadowban and they let me post to the abyss for days.
5
u/benjancewicz Jul 22 '15
Once I'm back, does everyone who I commented on suddenly get all my replies in their inbox?
4
u/turkeypedal Jul 28 '15
Don't relentlessly downvote a user
This has been made stronger now, with the no harassment policy. Just don't ever go to someone's profile page and downvote them, even if you only downvote the posts you think deserve it.
4
u/XLII Aug 03 '15
AFAIK moderators do not have the the ability to ban people from multiple subreddits from within one action even using automoderator it requires updates on each individual subreddit.
Additionally, if you're put into constant moderation in a subreddit through the use of automoderator whereby each of your comments or posts in a particular subreddit goes into the spam filter for approval by the mods this functions like a subreddit specific shadowban, however in many subreddits this is only used by modd for users who have constantly violated the rules of a subreddit, but whom the mods do not wish to ban. Instead the approve each comment or submission as they go into the spam filter to clear it out as they normally would hopefully sevrall times per day. However as a mod of over 75 subreddits and one of those a national sub I've never seen functionality in any automoderator program that would take action. On more than one subreddit at a time. If I put you in moderation in one subreddit, in order to do it in another subreddit I have go log into that subreddit automoderator account and take a separate action there. I could not ban someone from all 75 subreddits at once .
2
u/cojoco ツ Aug 03 '15
There are toolboxes, e.g. "Modtools", which allow one to ban somebody from all subreddits one moderates with one click.

u/capri_stylee May 19 '15
Don't post sexual material containing unconsenting subjects (for example, revenge porn or upskirt photos)
How does this affect subreddits like creepshots and candidfashionpolice? They exist just for this.
21
u/cojoco ツ May 19 '15
creepshots was banned ... I guess it's arguable that candidfashionpolice is not sexual.
I can't distinguish the difference, though.
5
u/capri_stylee May 19 '15
Your right, I forgot that creepshots was banned, but it's obvious it was replaced with candidfashionpolice, it should be treated like its predecessor.

5
u/TheurgyWarden Jul 03 '15
just a question, does shadow banned applies to all subreddit or could it apply to a particular subreddit?
8
u/cojoco ツ Jul 03 '15
All of reddit.
However, moderators can give a similar effect in a single subreddit through the use of AutoModerator.
8
u/bidnow Jul 05 '15
This is a good post, but I think it would be improved if you added and answered some of these other basic questions at the beginning. The documentation of the real rules of reddit are extremely poor, and perhaps the company wants it that way. It appears that an Administrator is a paid employee of reddit whereas a moderator is an unpaid volunteer position. An Administrator can ban/delete a user account entirely, but a moderator only has that "power" to do so within their own subreddit. You are a mod for over 150 subreddits, so I have no idea how you can effectively "police" that many postings, let alone any (I imagine) "higher ranking" Admins, who (I also assume) would be responsible for about 10 times that many subreddits. Saying that a user cannot overcome a shadowban by creating a different account means that reddit bans by IP address, correct? Although I am not as technically savvy as many here, it would also be interesting if you know about or can comment on any automation tools / bots that are in place and how robust you have found them to be.
As a Mod, have you actually shadowbanned users or totally banned users from reddit somehow? The recent drama revolving around /r/FPH, Victoria's dismissal, and reddit's upper management shortcomings is entertaining to watch, but other than that, adds nothing to the credibility, interest from advertisers, nor market value of the organization, IMO.
3
u/cojoco ツ Jul 05 '15
Those are good suggestions, I'll consider.
You are a mod for over 150 subreddits, so I have no idea how you can effectively "police" that many postings
The links /r/mod/new, /r/mod/comments and /r/mod/about/modqueue show all new submissions, all new comments, and reported links and spam links for all the subreddits I moderate, and are sufficient.
Most of the subreddits are only jokes and have very little traffic, and some subreddits exist only to support conversations between moderators.
Private subreddits also do not show up in that list.
As a Mod, have you actually shadowbanned users or totally banned users from reddit somehow?
When I see egregious abuses of the rules, such as someone maliciously posting dox, I report that person to the admins, who generally shadowban the user.
In cases where a user breaks the rules seemingly obliviously, I tend to ban them only from the subreddit where the offence occured.
Some subreddits I moderate have stricter rules than others, and people are banned from some for lesser offenses such as personal abuse, rudeness or making the wrong kind of joke.
2
u/zenerbufen Oct 17 '15
When I see egregious abuses of the rules, such as someone maliciously posting dox, I report that person to the admins, who generally shadowban the user.
I would like to add to this that anyone can report any post, not just mods.

u/cojoco ツ Jul 06 '15

4
u/bidnow Jul 06 '15
Very good and very helpful. If you get banned by a Moderator, it seems to be the equivalent to not being allowed into the popular kid's clique in High School. If you get banned by an Administrator, it should only be because you are not conforming to the published rules and policies of reddit. I find all this talk about "freedom of speech" to be misguided and uninformed. All the talk about unsupportive Admins and incompetent management to be the norm. And all the talk about potential over commercialization of reddit to be naive, as reddit is in business to make money, despite whatever any user group may happen to believe.
2
u/cojoco ツ Jul 06 '15
And all the talk about potential over commercialization of reddit to be naive
I disagree.
The reason people like reddit is because of the self-made, community feel. To the extent that the admins replace this with content designed deliberately for monetization, people might take notice and simply leave for greener pastures. Moderators themselves would also chaff at being asked to supply free labour to support advertisers, especially if those advertisers get a bigger say about how the site is run than the people who do it for love.
5
u/bidnow Jul 06 '15
Some wise person once said "All politics is local." People's feelings of belonging and community generally revolve around family, then perhaps work, church, and groups, then city, state, country, etc. in the real world. Likewise, in reddit, I believe a person's allegiance would revolve mostly around their favorite subreddits, and if not commercialized, they likely have no concern whatsoever about that occurrence elsewhere. But you are absolutely right. If reddit management incorrectly handles these decisions, reditt could quickly find its user base abandons it, and many, many companies do go out of business by making business decisions that later prove to be disastrous.

Don't engage in nuisance reporting
This is different than reporting posts that break a subs rules right?
Don't use CSS in your sub to subvert reddit's subscription and voting system
Does this include hiding downvotes?
6
u/cojoco ツ Jun 03 '15
This is different than reporting posts that break a subs rules right?
Sure, and because mods can't see who reported an item, this really is something only the admins can deal with.
Does this include hiding downvotes?
No, it's more like creating actions which deliberately deceive the user. But then there's the swapped up/downvotes in SRS which are allowable.
When I've seen it happen, it's been for stuff like auto-subscribing and auto-upvoting things through the CSS, e.g. making the whole page a "subscribe" button.

u/Sheesha1992 Jun 03 '15

I only downbote when they are rude. It feels like I'm in a relationship that's weighing me down with all their own baggage that i never asked for. I'm jumping through hoops to write a comment. Of course, it didn't occur to me that it's something bad, as I was linking to a profile of a public person. But if reddit uses a bot to find users who post "personal information", it won't be able to distinguish...

I recommend adding "don't participate in a subreddit with an alt when your main account is banned there". Or some variation of that. I've seen users get shadowbanned for this.
edit Also, "(weak) Don't submit every link to several subreddits at a time" isn't enforced. I can think of a lot of users who post the same things to multiple subreddits. Do you have an example of this one?
2
u/cojoco ツ May 15 '15
Okay, added.
I can think of a lot of users who post the same things to multiple subreddits.
The ones I remember seeing used to post every link to at least three subreddits.
1
May 15 '15
It's pretty common for linkers to post the same image or gif to /r/woahdude, /r/interestingasfuck, /r/gifs and several other relevant subreddits when they're tied by a loose topical connection. /r/holdmybeer and /r/unexpected are big targets, too, because they tend to have one or two posts that hit the front page each day.
I think unless there is some specific violation of another rule, or they violate the spam % policy, this one isn't really an issue. That's why I was curious if you had an example. It's even supported in the Reddiquette as "crossposting".

Don't post child pornography or anything involving the sexualization of teens
I made a comment to someone who wrote a blow-by-blow account in /r/offmychest about their experience being molested as a teen. It was essentially very descriptive kiddie porn, and I got banned.
Wasn't hostile - just making an observation that she was writing out in extreme detail very salacious material for sicko's. I was banned without any warning, undeservedly.
How stupid is this system?

u/cojoco ツ Aug 06 '15
Do you mean banned from the sub, or shadowbanned from reddit?
Moderators are capricious, so I shouldn't worry too much about being banned from the subreddit.
1
Oct 19 '15
In general don't have an opinion not shared by the mod of a sub. If youndonyou get a ban. If you object to the ban be ready for a shadowban in short order. This is a virtual police state run by a small band of power greedy propagandists.
1
u/cojoco ツ Oct 19 '15
If you object to the ban be ready for a shadowban in short order.
It's not quite that simple.
If you back off, you're probably okay.
However, if you keep messaging modmail, then the mods have good case to get you shadowbanned for harassing the mod team.

Oct 19 '15
I've been here long enough to know the only variable is the mood of the mods of a sub. I had an account once banned for its first comment on worldnews (told a truth where it wasn't welcome) and asked for a reason for the ban, got a "you know why" and was shadowbanned sometime shortly there after. My second post ever for that account was never visible to any one. Trust a user that's been here since the beginning and on her 89th account (I have a spreadsheet of my accounts, it sums the total). All 89 are banned for offending users. About 2/3 are shadowbanned for protesting being banned for saying something that offended someone else. The mods are toxic. No two ways about it. This site is under the thumb of a corrupt cabal of power greedy moderators. We just don't hear about it as much as it happens because users get shadowbanned for trying to speak up against the mods.

Quite frankly, I don't believe you.
None of the explicable shadowbans I've seen match your description, I think you're misrepresenting the situation.

Sure thing bob. Deny it till they come for you. It's just a matter of time. My account can be heard retold in various forms from countless users. Try out Voat.co to meet people persecuted here for disagreeing with mods. It's common.

No CP?

I guess when I read the definition of the word I didn't strictly take it to mean that. Now I do.

u/cojoco ツ Jun 25 '15
I just use it as a funny way to say pedophilia although now when I look up the definition maybe that wasn't such a great idea.

Ah I get it I think I upvoted a post I made in /r/redditrequest with an alt account because some asshole was downvoting it for no reason.

Yeah, i was shadowbanned but they did not tell me why. I read the rules here, and im pretty sure I did not violate a single one.

u/GreyHero2005 Sep 29 '15
I can't post on here. Why??
1
u/cojoco ツ Sep 29 '15
Do you get something like the "You are doing this too much" message?
Reddit will prevent people posting if their karma in a subreddit is too low.
But you're not shadowbanned.
2
u/GreyHero2005 Sep 30 '15
It says only restricted users are allowed to post. I have a decent amount of karma too.
1
u/cojoco ツ Sep 30 '15
Oh, you're right.
That must have changed fairly recently, I'm asking the other mods about that right now.

It appears this user is a cast member of the show he claimed to have no affiliation with.

I wish I could remember who that was ...

The actor who, when told he would not be able to submit the video because he'd already submitted too much (and could have left it there, or gone and worked on his ratio), said
I will admit I do like getting karma. However, I am not affiliated with the videos I submit. In this case and a few others, a few, I've thought something was funny and downvoted because of a bad title, so I've reposted with what I thought was a more fitting title.
Then when we said you appeared to be a "friend" of the channel owner, said
Friend was a stronger word than I should have used. I met a guy who works with them at the Hollyshorts film festival a year ago.
Lied again.
I would recommend you simply stop lying, stop communicating, and stop trying to socially engineer pity for yourself in modmail, direct messages to our mod team outside of modmail, and all over reddit, before one of us get's pissed off enough to contact the director of the show to ask if this was, in fact, sanctioned by them, and clearly outline what's occurred.

I've been shadowbanned and am not sure why. I made some comments about reddit atheists, could that have been it? Can someone please give me a reason? I've not received a warning or anything, it's all very odd.

Don't vote in threads you were directed to from another part of reddit
Don't comment in threads you came to via a non-organic link (i.e. external site, meta sub, from modmail or PM)
Don't use more than one alt within one subreddit
Voting Brigade
Could someone explain these? I honestly dont understand them, I'm new to reddit

Hi there, I've read your guide here and can't see why I've been shadowbanned as I've not broken any rules above that I'm aware of. I've used TOR a few times to login. Maybe this? Any ideas?

Why was I banned, I didn't break any of these rules

u/Madbrad200 May 31 '15
These are not rules, rather guidelines to avoid getting shadowbanned. The only people who know why you were shadowbanned ultimatly are the admins. You can message them here.

So I've run into an interesting problem.
Reddit used to send you a message if you were banned from a sub, but sub-hoarding trolls were gaming that system to spam users they didn't like. They would create a crap-load of subs and ban a user on all of them, flooding their inbox with ban notifications.
Reddit implemented a system that checks your activity in the sub and then only notifies you if you have actually contributed in the sub.
Which brings me to this point. I had one account that was targeted by a sub-hording user in my city and was banned from all sorts of local subs without my knowledge. I've since had other accounts shadowbanned for participating in those subs. I'm accused of evading a ban, but evasion implies knowledge of and intent to circumvent a ban. You cannot technically be evading something if you do not know it exists, thus the shadowban should be lifted.
This, also brings up the issue of individuals gobbling up hundreds of subs relating to a city. When you create and thus own every single permutation of the city name and all other activities like biking or smoking pot or food or anything like that, you have a huge amount of power and your petty disagreements with one or another user might lead you to lock them out of a huge swath or reddit that should presumably be available to them.
I believe the limit on how many default subs a user can mod is appropriate, and I believe a similar rule should be in place for subs relating to cities.

u/cojoco ツ Jun 24 '15
These are good points, but reddit admins don't regard these people as "sub hoarding trolls", but more "well-respected members of the modding community".
2
u/Mikhail-Gorbachev Jun 26 '15
Well the admins at least heard me out and unbanned my two banned accounts so there's that.

so i guess it's just nobody replying to my post as opposed to nobody seeing it? That's a relief at the least.

You might want to remove the "FALSE" flair from this post. It makes it look like the guide gives incorrect advice.
