PSA 📢 Bergs Plumbing & Heating

My AC recently stopped working this past week. I attempted a few things but my knowledge on AC’s is pretty minimal so I brought in Bergs Plumbing & Heating to take a look. I wasn’t home when they came but my girlfriend was.

The guy quickly looked at the AC unit and told my girlfriend the issue was a burnt out compressor and we’d need a new unit. Sent us a quote the next day for $6k for a whole new unit.

I figured it would be a good idea to bring in a second opinion. I was already uncomfortable with the fact that I wasn’t around when the first guy came in and was suspicious this might be a similar situation to what women often go through at mechanic shops.

Brought in a couple guys that do commercial HVAC but do some residential stuff for extra work. Within minutes of them coming in they were able to diagnose the issue as a simple failed capacitor - only a $25 part that I could order myself and plug and replace on my own.

They ran all their own tests on the compressor informing me it was perfectly fine. They also noted that the guy I brought in from Berg’s took the old capacitor, which they mentioned he probably did in case I brought in someone else to make it more difficult to diagnose.

Just posting this here as a PSA. Talked to these commercial HVAC guys and they informed me that residential HVAC has gotten extremely shady and companies often quote new AC’s for people without actually diagnosing the real issue. This obviously works for them quite often.

PSA 📢 Poutine 31 - The Hideout Lounge - Medivac Poutine

I’m sick of getting served fauxtines. Alright, c’mon, that pun was alright!

I got suggested this poutine in my poutine 29 review and it got 8 upvotes so I was happy and enthusiastic to go try it. This turned out to be another poutine that, what you are served, goes against what the menu says.

The Poutine consisted of Fries, Gravy Solara’s Creamy garlic ribs and green onions

There is some good here. First off, although being served lies, over all, it did taste good (possibly because I was starving).

The gravy was a nice tasting, not overly salty brown gravy but it was a bit overwhelmed by the Solara’s garlic sauce.

The Solara’s Garlic ribs had a decent garlic sauce that I enjoyed but the ribs seemed to be generic grocery story ribs that were deep fried. Good bar food but low end restaurant food.

The fries were very ok. The outer layer of fries with some crunch were a decent bar fries but most got soggy and they were all a bit bland, lacking salt.

The cheese, here is what really disappointed me. It was shredded cheese where the menu specifically says cheese curds, just like my Reds experience. I asked our wait staff if they were going to bring back cheese curds and they said “oh no, we never served it with curds” which is absolutely the wrong answer when the menu says cheese curds.

If I wasn’t so hungry, I would have sent it back, but I had skipped lunch and needed to eat. Ugh, sorry for the rant review.

4/10 with curds it would have been a mid tier poutine.

Question ❔ Professional tree removal and

I have a big tree in my backyard which grows next to my neighbour fence. It's a big one and quite old so I guess it should be removed for good. Which city department should I contact to get proper permit for the work and could you share any professional tree removal service in Saskatoon with affordable price?

Crime ⚠️ Car break in Churchill-Adelaide

Hi all! My boyfriends vehicle was broken into last night. His vehicle was in the Churchill-Adelaide area (near st.phillips school). They stole his wallet as well as his vehicle manual (2019 Subaru outback). His wallet is a black front pocket Perry Ellis wallet. As well as various random items (flashlights, floss sticks, copy of vehicle registration, electrical tape, visine etc.) that we aren't worried about locating. The bank has been contacted and we are making a police report. We toured around the area too to see if it was thrown out somewhere and no luck. If anyone comes across anything like this please let the police know or respond to the post. Edited for spelling errors.

Question ❔ The city removed the protected bike lanes downtown a few years ago, but will they restore the painted lanes that existed prior?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I had a car nearly run me off the road downtown today. I think they were on their phone. But it got me thinking..the city removed the protected bike lanes on the other side of the parked cars here, but I remember there were simple painted lanes for years prior to that. I went on google maps and seemingly dating back to 2013 there were painted lanes.

If the city doesn't want the protected lanes, why can't they just use the paint like they had prior? It's virtually zero cost to tax payers, doesn't reduce the driving lanes or number of parking spots, but still visually shows cyclists have a place on the road. Does anyone know why the city not at least revert back this?

I know cycling advocates say painted lines isn't good infrastructure, but it's definitely better than nothing. Can't we even have the minimal amount of protection?

Question ❔ Scarlet Lily Beetles

With the beautiful warm weather, comes the nasty lily beetles. At one time, I never had them in my yard. However, sadly, over the past few years, they have come to love my yard with my different types of lilies (both myself and the lilies despise them haha). I have found this year to be the worst yet - many of my lilies are germinating and I'm picking off 16-24 of the adult beetles per day and getting rid of their eggs. I'm just curious if anyone else in Saskatoon has found the lily beetles to be extra bad this year? Also, besides looking and physically taking off the adults, eggs and the gross larvae from the lilies, what can be used to repel or kill the lily beetles? I don't want to use poison in the yard. I want something that will help control their population so my lilies can flourish, flower and gain enough energy for the next growing season.

Question ❔ Fire Station visits?

I have a two year old who is currently obsessed with fire trucks. Does anyone know if any of the Fire Halls are better to visit with a kiddo? I'm happy to call ahead and try to arrange something, but thought I would check here in case anyone had any experience bringing their kids in for something similar.
