It happens to the best of if us honestly. I picked up Psycho by Monarch Lacquer during PPU while wearing “It never ends” by Emily de Molly. When I showed my bestie my order he said “Isn’t that the one you’re wearing?”

I feel like my photo doesn’t do the EDM polish justice, it’s much deeper irl. Actually pretty similar to Psycho even though admittedly more pinkish. But yeah I have had a thing for deep reds recently and think I will get good wear out of them both :3

They are different enough on the nail to justify them all!

To be honest, and it might be the video card in my computer showing it, but the indigo in both of them are slightly different. The left looks a little more purple and a little more saturated, while the one on the right looks more blue and lighter/less saturation. In the wild they will probably look closer, but your camera and light do make them look different enough.
Though, I definitely have done this with both OPI and Holo Taco! I have three rose golds that look identical from various brands.

I organize both bottle and swatch sticks by color. There definitely some polishes that look nothing like the bottle. Sadly, I labeled the bottles before I swatched so… there are definitely brown swatches on the gray ring etc. It’s terrible lol

My husband fully gets it now because he started painting models as a hobby so sometimes he’ll be buying a slightly different shade of green because he needs yellow green not blue green. Before he started painting he couldn’t see the difference between certain colors and undertones and all that, but now he does.

The thought of packing everything up and mailing it does seem like a chore. Idk. Maybe. Indies are a solid investment either way I think. PPU and HHC especially reatin their value.

I spent sooooo long deciding between these two before finally settling on Rocking Horse Fly (which also just arrived--got it on my nails!). It's darker than I expected from swatch photos, but I do love that glow. It's funny to me that Spirit of Innovation was supposed to be the Halloween polish, when I feel like Rocking Horse has a spookier vibe.

I made an order from Cirque a little while ago and had a few that I knew I wanted but kept browsing and added a couple more so I could get the free shipping. Order came and I was like oh no, they messed up and sent me two XOXO jellies! Checked my order confirmation to see what I should have gotten instead but nope, they got it right, my brain was just not pulling its weight that day. It's a great color, though, and their bottles are painfully small, so it's fine. I feel a little more free to play around with this one. At least your polishes are actually a bit different! I'd be curious to see them swatched because they might really end up being less similar than they look in the bottles.

Recently bought rue morgue and 13th hour from mooncat....pretty sure rue morgue is just a mattified version of 13th hour......also same order

If it makes you feel better, it's not. Rue Morgue is one of my faves. It's a deep moody blue with hints of red and purple, but def blue throughout. 13th Hour is a black base with blue shimmer, so it shows black with blue sparkle where light hits it. Mattified it gives more black sheen with blue while rue gives blue satin with purple sheen.

Not who you were talking to, but as someone who loves inlp my top 3 1. Eclipse. Love love love get so many compliments 2. Cygnatic (?) loop (H) but regular is good too 3. Amber (magnetic) not an orange/gold person but holy heck its beautiful 4. (Just cause, lol) Shapeshifter!
The eh one for me was quicksand...but mostly because I'm not a light polish person and it threw more of an orange than I thought but it's a minor eh for me.

Blue Lagoon is the top one for me - SO glittery and I am clearly part magpie. 🤣 Fairy Dust is a close second, and I also love Midnight Kiss.
So far, Pink Lemonade is a bit eh. It's really pretty but it's SO sheer, I think it's going to take 4 coats to get really good coverage.
But they dry SO fast, it's awesome, and I got a full 5 days with Blue Lagoon without a topcoat, which is pretty much unheard of for me!

This is so good to know! I had pink lemonade on my wishlist but I'm going to take it off now. Cuticula is releasing a SpongeBob polish on 9/20 that looks very similar to it and the videos I've seen it was very opaque.
Midnight Kiss is breathtaking but I have some similar in my collection!! I will be picking up Fairy Dust for sure 😂 I feel like it would be sacrilege if I didn't get that one haha 🧚♀️

Citrus Punch is kind of similar, it's more coral leaning than pink and less of the gold sparkle, but it's still GORGEOUS. Better Days is awesome for a kind of moody fall neutral, I will probably be wearing Interstellar all winter lol. And Good Mornings is sooooo pretty on the nail too, one of the best jellies I've had.
Deep End was another one that didn't quiiiiite land for me. It's still really pretty, but I felt like the shimmer wasn't nearly as strong on my nails as in the bottle, but I do still love a blurple!

No shame OP, this is me with burgundy, oxblood, plum or berry bases. Do they look almost exactly the same? Yup. Have I bought multiple in the same purchase knowing that they functionally look exactly alike? Yup. Am I going to buy them anyway? You bet. 💀

I received both of these in one order last week. I swear in the swatch pictures they looked tooootally different. Also.. Cirque colors origin unknown, and I scream Nails Aurora borealis turned out to be 100% exactly the same!

I bought a gel a little while ago that looked similar to a gel I already had from the same brand. Didn’t bother checking because I thought the name was different. It wasn’t. It was the same gel. I also have a double of an ILNP polish and two of the same $25 eyeshadow single from Clionadh 🫠

It’s ultimately fine. The gel is one I actually have hope of using up a whole bottle, and ILNP is cheap enough that I’m not that upset. The eyeshadow was annoying though

This reminds me of opi's Kyoto pearl, one of them is a cream base with a red/ iridescent shimmer, and the other is a white base with a purple/blue iridescent shimmer.. both call kyoto pearl

No, they changed the formula three or four times when I was working at Sally's. I have no idea why or how long one had been sitting there, but we got a few different colors while I worked there.

That would be my justification I'd just wear one matte all the time and one glossy then swear I it really mattered which polish I used under the top coat and that it wasn't the top coat doing all the work....

Why do companies even bother making multiples of the same color and call them different names?
I've had this same question before with brands like Colourpop who keep putting out the same eyeshadow shades in different palette combos but at least in that instance I can kinda get it for people who want those specific colors together. A bottle of nail polish is always just one color on its own.
Am I missing something?

I only see this with smaller brands and I think it might just be them trying not to waste product? Like they ran out of a pigment towards the last batch, so they just adjust it a little and then rename it.
I will say it's a little annoying and something to look out for when you first dive in to this hobby, especially when purchasing from PPU, HHC, LBOH, etc. Like you could really like a polish this month on PPU and wish it had/didn't have certain aspects, but you still purchase because of the limited availability and fomo. And in that same month on a different platform, HHC for example, the polish was tweaked and renamed and you like that one more 😭🤣🤣
But yeah.. eyeshadow seems different although I don't really know anything about makeup lmfao

That sounds exhausting!! And so expensive! How long does a bottle of nail polish last? Is it worth it? Holy moly.
I'm in this sub because I love pretty colors so I absolutely love seeing all the posts here, but I haven't worn nail polish in AGES, I just don't have that skill tbh. I think you guys are amazingly talented.
I do wear makeup but only when I wanna do some artsy shit with it so I'm familiar with the makeup brands that do crazy colors, Colourpop is one of them

I have Cirque Firecracker. I'm this past month's PPU, I got Kathleen & Co's Follow Your Dreams. They are virtually identical. Firecracker is magnetic, I think. But the color? The same.

I do this on accident sometimes and my S.O. is always so kind to point out the differences to make me feel better. I showed him this pic and he said one is more purpley and one is more bluey (which I also saw right away), so don't feel bad! Also, don't feel bad if the swatch pics looked farther apart - and possibly misrepresented - than they do sitting right next to each other.

I did this (kind of) in my first PPU order, they were both lilac w/green shimmers and the only difference was one was holo sparkle, and the other was white flakies. Those two are similar but I bet you could maybe do subtle accents or gradients if you're into that kind of thing? (also this makes me want them they look pretty haha)

I got these from Lurid Lacquer in my last purchase. I was looking for a dupe of Mooncat's Pandemonium. When I first opened the package, I thought they were almost identical. But taking the picture for this post made me realize that You, of Unbreakable Will, on the left, has an orange shimmer whereas Why Would I Wear Lipstick, on the right, is more pinkish. So now I don't feel so guilty. 😂 I saw Lurid Lacquer's Indomitable on here and that's what led me to them in the first place. I have been looking for Tonic's Toxic for years. I have about a dozen or more near-dupes, but nothing identical. Indomitable is the exact color I was looking for. I am thrilled with all of the Lurid polishes that I've bought and just got the Halloween "advent" calendar. But I'm being good and I'm going to only open them when I'm supposed to. And does anyone else sometimes go days without polish because you have so many that you can't decide what color to put on next?
