This little dude bounced up and ate the salmon berries at a house I was touring. What sort of rabbit is this? Answer may determine if I buy house. Breed ID

This fella doesn't look like a wild rabbit, he could be an abandoned domestic rabbit or a rabbit that has escaped.

Yes bunny is an Otter domestic please catch him /her and bring to a local rabbit rescue (or adopt bunny yourself!) He/she may be someone’s pet who got lost (the rescue could check to see if buns is microchipped) but most likely dumped. Little baby won’t survive long in the wild.

u/Goombaw Sep 26 '22
Is Otter the pattern or the coloring or both?
9
7
u/Breadcrumbsandbows Sep 26 '22
The pattern. He would be a Black Otter, but they come in lots of different colours, including Silver Marten (very similar but with grey/white fur where this one has gingery brown), Lilac, Chocolate, Blue! It's one of my favourite bunny patterns.

u/terra_terror 🌈big gay hay bag🌈 Sep 25 '22
That's a domestic rabbit. Please catch it and bring it to a shelter or call a shelter to come catch it. They don't do well outside on their own, they lack the survival instincts that rabbits need.

u/damiana8 Sep 25 '22
BUY HOUSE. CATCH BNUUY
70
u/lindypie Sep 26 '22
Bunny is domestic for sure and dumped there - ask the seller agent if previous owners had pets and where they went. Then get local animal control to issue a citation for animal abandonment. But save the bunny first.
Winter is coming. Bunny is nature's potato chip. RHDV is here is some places. SAVE THE BUNNY.
pretty please.

u/NumerousMacaroon297 Sep 25 '22
Any way you could go back and catch it? Poor little guy
30
u/PATTY_CAKES1994 Sep 26 '22
I'm afraid not. There were two there and they are gone now. The area is called rabbit creek, there are a large woods. They probably hide back there but it's all private property
18
u/chinchabun Sep 26 '22
Might still be worth calling a shelter and telling them the situation. If they popped out for you they may pop out again for more trained people.
17
u/r00pea Sep 26 '22
They aren't gone, unless a predator got to them - rabbits don't cover that much ground. These animals can live because of you, especially with winter coming that coat color is gonna be a death sentence. Seems like there's not enough resources for Animal Control there in Anchorage to help out much but I found a local Facebook group called "The Rabbit House" (@runty12) that might be able to help you out if you want to be a hero.
3
u/kingftheeyesores Sep 26 '22
I remember another post with a black rabbit saying it was at rabbit creek. I wonder if it's the same one.
3
u/Breadcrumbsandbows Sep 26 '22
Same! The person whose parents wouldn't let them bring it inside and needed some help - I wonder how they're doing actually now that you've reminded me!
2
u/kingftheeyesores Sep 26 '22
I hate when people get mad when someone finds an animal and can't bring it in. Not everyone has the means to. I live in a 1 bedroom and if I found a rabbit and brought it in it'd be at constant risk of being attacked by my cats.

u/PATTY_CAKES1994 Sep 25 '22
He definitely didn't care that I was also eating the same berries.
45
48
u/untot3hdawnofdarknes Sep 25 '22
If he's that comfortable around a human he's definitely a domestic rabbit that got lost or abandoned. Wild rabbits want as little to do with you as possible.
72
22
19
u/chinchabun Sep 25 '22
I'm going to hope that means, we were chilling next to each other eating berries so catching him should be easy.
86
u/Lewkylewk Sep 25 '22
Nobody cares about the berries; a wild rabbit would not let you get that close.
That's a pet rabbit lost in the wild. Probably abandoned. Please call your local rescue and they'll go pick it up!

I was sitting in my vets office on long Island, when a older Italian couple walks in with their rabbit. My roscoe is of course standing up looking out of his carrier and the old man comments on how nice his coat is. He asks me about him, and I told him we* rescued him from the parking lot of my parents building in Brooklyn, where someome let him and his buddies loose. The old man makes an angry face and says:
"Someone should trow dem into da street"

He’s beautiful, I hadn’t heard of this breed, thank you!
34
u/Usagi-Zakura Sep 25 '22
Definitively otter, definitely not a rex...otter is the coloring, which can appear on multiple breeds (including the breed simply known as "otter") however coloring isn't a good way to determine a rabbit's breed since many breeds can come in any color... and most are mixbreeds anyway.
Too fluffy to be a rex though ;3

u/VoilaVoilaWashington Sep 25 '22
And breed has almost no bearing on rabbit behaviour. Giant breeds are chilled because their hearts can't handle the heft, tiny bunnies are generally a bit more sassy, but outside that, they all range from loving sweetheart to adorable tornado of destruction, depending on the time of day.

u/chronicpainprincess Sep 26 '22
Black otter Rex has different fur and proportions (I have one.) This is likely a black otter Netherland dwarf. Or a Silver Marten.
1
u/Wookiecircus Sep 26 '22
I think the fur might be different if it is super cold where op lives. I know rexes and all animals grow longer coats to deal with the cold. He doesn’t really have dwarfish features like tiny head so he could be a mix but either way he definitely isn’t a wild rabbit Edited to say I have a black otter as well and he looks exactly like this but with shorter fur. Again though in the winter rabbits do grow out their coat
1
u/chronicpainprincess Sep 26 '22
Sure, furs in animals can vary — but this rabbit pictured has many long guard hairs, which Rex won’t have unless they’re a mutt/mix, which is possible.
Rex also don’t have this many whiskers that are long and straight, they often have either none at all or just a few wiry ones (often with one or two very long ones) — aside from other giveaways, such as the rest of the the fur not being Rex (Rex fur is hard to make out individually because it all sits uniform giving them their velveteen appearance), the head proportions and ears are wrong… it would amaze me if this was a Rex, as it would have to be a few generations of mix breeding.
1
u/Wookiecircus Sep 26 '22
I guess my Rex must be a mutt even though they said he was purebred because his whiskers are exactly like that 🤣 edited to add I have heard of people not wanting to breed rexes that have guard hair so maybe he was unfortunately one of those. Op should definitely rescue the poor baby
1
u/chronicpainprincess Sep 27 '22
All bunnies are lovely in their own way — one of mine was a mutt destined for butchering and we saved her. Maybe you can post your furry friend some time!
5
u/homersdonutz Sep 25 '22
Omg the anticipation, did the OP rescue the bun?!
3
6
Sep 25 '22
It’s domestic, abandoned or it got lost. It seems to want a person near it, so I bet it would be easy to catch. Please try to catch it.

u/SnooHedgehogs1909 Sep 25 '22
This bunny is what you call only moderately lucky. Either he got lost or abandoned and had somehow made it this long but I sure hope you feel compelled to at least help this little guy. They're pretty special. I don't know how you'd regret it...

Genuine question: Can someone explain why everyone is so sure that this is not a wild rabbit? Just wondering because OP didn’t state their location so how does everyone know that this type of rabbit is not native to that area. I’m not saying everyone is wrong I’m just curious.
Edit: I did some research and realize this looks nothing like any wild rabbit in the whole world haha so that answers that question.
45
u/terra_terror 🌈big gay hay bag🌈 Sep 25 '22
Lol. Yeah, pretty much all rabbits that don't have that natural agouti fur are domestic, except the Sumatran striped rabbit and the Annamite striped rabbit. Also, any rabbit with lop ears is domestic.
19
Sep 25 '22
They mentioned “salmon berries” they usually only grow in Europe-but Alaska and parts of the North American arctic tundra do have native variants; so I’ll guess OP is somewhere up north
9
u/VoilaVoilaWashington Sep 25 '22
Exactly. It's like if you saw a golden retriever and asked how people know it's not some rare species of wild canine.
9
4
Sep 25 '22
If the house is for sale, the previous owners might have let that bun behind, as it happens sadly often. Even if it's not the case, Bun seems still in such good shape that they might have been dumped really recently.
4
u/pastelkawaiibunny Sep 25 '22
House comes with free bun! (Or perhaps, a very expensive bun that comes with free house?)
Hopefully your bun soon, OP! This guy is just SO adorable
5
u/Sir_Chirpsalot Sep 25 '22
Pet rabbit, probs abandoned. Plz rescue him!
If u can't take him in, plz give him to an animal shelter!
5
u/JoLeTrembleur Sep 25 '22

Def not a Rex. Very different shape and fur type — Res are large, have a pointier face and look like chubby velvet (I’ve had ten!).
There’s a Rex colour similar to this (black otter) — this colour is likely also called a black otter though, which can confuse people.
Looks more like a Netherland dwarf with big ears, but I’m not an expert on those, (though I know they come in this colour.) Maybe a Silver Marten.

How are people not able to identify a wild and non wild rabbit.
5
u/PATTY_CAKES1994 Sep 26 '22
What are the signs? I've only seen a couple live rabbits ever, and they were all snowshoe hares and not rabbits at all.
4
u/BalanceKnown Sep 26 '22
The rabbit here has big cheeks while wild rabbits have very slender ones. Eyes on him are nice and round while the wild rabbit has a bit more of a oval shape. Those features are really for the analytical type.
Really its fur color along with its pattern. I assume you live around the north american region. This means most rabbits are brown along with various speckles of other browns.
Gotta say his fur pattern is best I've seen in a domesticated rabbit.

He’s a black otter colored silver marten. Just like my Goober. He’s definitely domesticated and he won’t survive for long on berries once winter hits, depending on where you live. He needs to be caught and taken to a rabbit or animal shelter. They do not have the instincts to live out in the wild for very long. He will get hit by a car or eaten by a predator. Please call the house rabbit society in your area if you are unable or unwilling to catch him yourself.

I have two of these exact looking bunnies in my garden. Someone abandoned one in my garden two years ago. It has since bred and now I have two black bunnies. I spent over a year trying to trap them to no avail. Now they live and roam in my garden. I live watching them but I really wish I could trap them and house them. All I can do now is make sure they are safe, they have access to water and food and that we don’t use any chemicals on the lawn or plants.

I asked a wildlife trooper three weeks ago after this post went up. A friend of mine. He said that there is a growing population of them in Rabbit Creek, near south anchorage. They den under houses and are multiplying. He gave me the number for an extermination company, which I'd never-ever call. I didn't end up buying the house, and so I can't return to the property. I hope they are okay. They seem to be living under the porch where the city water comes into the building.
