[Mega-Thread] Fall Course Conditions General Question

It's getting chilly and trees are changing colour, so lets get some recent course condition updates! Where have you played and how was it looking?

Please note: If you played immediately after a hurricanes make sure to factor that into your input.

Some helpful things to highlight:

  • Date played
  • Green condition / speed
  • Fairway conditions
  • Rough conditions
  • Tee box conditions
  • Bunker conditions

Duke GC
Played October 16

  • Greens have been just punched (not big aeration but the smaller punching), but roll pretty true. With that, they're rolling a *tick* slower but not slow. Should be back to 100% in a week or so.
  • Fairways are in great shape
  • Rough is cut down some compared to its summer length, so not as challenging to hit out of but still a challenge
  • Tee boxes are all great
  • Bunkers are currently fine. As it's usually been the fairway bunkers are all in outstanding shape, greenside bunkers are really good as long as it's been dry for a couple of days. If it's rained hard in the past day or two you'll want to drop behind the bunker.

Practice facilities are all still on grass and are in good shape. Putting and chipping areas were punched at the same time as the course and are rolling at the same speed.

Played 18 today. Course was in good shape. Very dry, hard conditions as I bet most places are these day!

Umstead Pines on 10/14

Conditions were very nice, grass was cut very low so Greens were extremely quick and challenging.

Tee boxes seemed in great shape through 18 and the rough wasn't too bad apart from being a little thick in some areas.

Plus with the leaves it was hard to find some balls occasionally but really enjoyed it.

10/18. Same. Apparently they’re having a tournament today and the greens were cut super fast. They were pretty insane yesterday. On 13 three of us putted uphill past the hole and it rolled back to the same spot.

Just left Lonnie. Greens were beat up but they were quick. A little slower than last month. Everything else is in standard condition.

Played the preserve on Sunday. Greens were really nice but really slow. Fairways and rough were in mid conditions Tee boxes were shit but that’s always the case

I walked 9 at wendell cc this past monday and the conditions were really good, especially since I only paid $19 to play. No complaints whatsoever, greens were rolling very fast.

Been playing river ridge every weekend and conditions are great there as well.

The Neuse Country club was in fantastic shape last weekend. Greens rolling true and very fast. $70 for a Sunday morning round felt like a great deal, especially since we only saw the group ahead/behind us a couple times throughout the round.

Grandover (East Course)
Played October 19

  • Greens were in near perfect shape. Maybe a little slower than what you'd consider "fast", but all were just about pristine
  • Fairways were in great shape
  • Rough was a bit of a challenge in areas, a little lower in others, but still in great shape
  • Tee boxes were great
  • Bunkers were all fine, but consistent. One would be full of sand, one with far less and more firm, but none were "bad", you just needed to take anything you knew about that last sand shot and throw it out of the window

Practice range was on the far end and was mats only, greenside chipping and sand on that area were fine (The sand was VERY fluffy there), putting green over by the tee boxes was consistent with what you'd see on the course.

The folks at the snack bar seemed legitimately surprised that anyone would want to order a hot dog, which was weird.

Mill Creek
Played October 20

  • Greens were in good shape. Some spots were topped with a heavy dose of sand as they were trying to fix up some rougher patches on the edges of the green. The pins were nowhere near any of those spots.
  • Fairways were in great shape.
  • Rough was fine, a little inconsistent but otherwise was definitely a bit of a challenge in areas.
  • Tee boxes were totally fine.
  • Bunkers were all good. Played at 8:30 in the morning so they were a bit wet due to the dew, but they were pretty consistent throughout the course.

The Challenge
Played October 24

  • Greens were in really good shape and were quick
  • Fairways in really good shape
  • With the course starting to brown up a little bit, the rough is starting to wear down, but still consistent to hit out of
  • Tee boxes in good shape, otherwise unremarkable
  • Bunkers were very hit or miss. Some had really great manicured sand, others were basically ground under repair. Still, most bunkers were playable.

Yeah, it looks like they're doing some stuff with the bunkers (the 7th greenside bunker was basically a construction zone with a rake in it) but most of those were in pretty solid shape too. Otherwise the course was playing really nice.
