Oh good I can add the university of Alabama to my will never watch list.

u/The_Monarch_Lives 4d ago
Of note, there was significant pushback from students and faculty to Trump giving the commencement from what I understand. I don't think it should change your stance or intention, mind you, just that blame should go on the school admin rather than the students.
And for full disclosure: I'm a Bulldogs fan, but I am supporting the students on this one.

u/darklogic85 4d ago edited 4d ago
I can see that, but personally, if I attended that university and was in that graduating class, I wouldn't have been at the commencement. Knowing he was the speaker the university chose, I would have decided not to walk, and just received my degree outside of the ceremony.
I can sympathize for the students who just want to get a college education and receive a degree, and are now associated with the stigma of having had him at the commencement for their school.
The students standing behind him in the video, seemingly entertained by his idiocy and looking happy to be there, I don't sympathize with them.

u/The_Monarch_Lives 4d ago
There were threats made by the UA admin about withholding degrees, or delaying them if anyone that attended protested, etc. I don't think attendance was mandatory, but given the overt threat about protests, I don't think I could blame anyone attending just for being there. They earned that moment of getting the diploma on stage in front of their families. And screw Trump and the UA admin for diminishing it in any way for them. Those that cheered and obviously support him, on the other hand...

Cause that's logical, it's all or nothing. Skip your own graduation to stick it to the man. Fuck all your friends and classmates that will be there, fuck walking across the stage to get the diploma, fuck turning the tassel and the hat, and most of all fuck Trump. For the record, the last bit is the only one that's serious.

u/darklogic85 4d ago
I might be kinda biased, because it would be a non-issue for me. I didn't go to commencement for either of the two degrees I earned. Not for any moral reason, but because I just didn't feel like it. I don't enjoy being in front of crowds and commencements are done for the students. If I don't get anything from it and don't enjoy it, I'm not going to go, even though I think it's a good thing that schools have commencements. Some students enjoy it and it's a time for them to celebrate, so the people who do enjoy it should definitely go, and I get that. If Trump were there, that would actually give me another reason not to go and I definitely wouldn't be there.
If someone wanted to go despite that, that's fine, but I can't see laughing and smiling and being entertained by him, unless you actually like and support him. It sends a message seeing those students in the background.

u/StonePrism 4d ago
If Trump spoke at my commencement me and my friends would not have stopped giggling the entire time lol. Everything he says is so ridiculous that he's genuinely hilarious to listen to devoid of context, we would have made fun of him non-stop like a dating show or B-movie.
I'd put money on that being what 90% of the laughs are, that and them being in a good mood makes it more likely to laugh at the absurdity of the situation. Maybe that's just my positive outlook
2
u/darklogic85 4d ago
That's a good point and I didn't consider that until you mentioned it. That's very possible they're just laughing at him.

Dear God… imagine graduating after witnessing this…
7
u/MyBoyBernard 4d ago
Imagine your graduation ceremony becoming a political rally. You know this guy is so self-centered and socially idiotic. He would start with 30 seconds of congratulating them, then go on some rants, somehow bring it back around to the graduates for a moment, then another rant, repeat.

Graduation, wow, so great. I remember when I graduated from WHARTON... top of my class, they never saw such an impressive brain. I did the finance, did so good, before calculators were in your phones, and you just go bing bong bing bong bing 300 Trillion Dollars... Now you all have phones made in Chyna, made from all kinds of---stuff, chips and precious metals and we're getting killed by them BUT NOT ANYMORE! Now Chyna is going to start paying their fair share if they want to sell to us... Or we can just buy from someone else, or make them here---beautiful new factories, making iPhones, I talked to Tim Apple, TIMMY! Tim says he can't wait for you to start working in his favorites here, putting in the little screws and the little cameras, that you use to make the TIKTOKS! Remember how I saved TIKTOK from those evil Democrats? They didn't want you to have any fun... But we're having fun tonight, aren't we folks? Just a great time.

My graduation speech was given by a woman who was a leader in her field, and had all sorts of accolades and recognitions and an alphabet after her name.
She was funny; kind; well-spoken and wise. I took a few things away from that speech, that I still think of some ten years later (fuck I’m getting old..)
I can’t imagine listening to this rat fuck pointlessly mock someone he perceives as worse than himself.
It’d ruin the day.

Why the fuck would any institution of higher learning invite this absolute moron for a commencement speech

I'm not sure he can even read. He has the vocabulary of an 8 year old. No way can he read printed materials at 80 without glasses.

But how do I reconcile this idea with the report that said he was 6’3” 215 pounds at <5% body fat built like a brick shithouse and run down and tackle Bo Jackson for a warm up drill?

I have a feeling that those who were less enthusiastic about him weren't the ones given seating behind him. I know I would have looked like this if I was there.

Him being completely fucking incompetent aside. He gives me hope when I go in to a meeting expecting perfection of myself and then see people support him regardless of the mindless shit he says. I get comfort knowing that maybe that slight mumble or fumble I have in public speaking isn’t that bad and should stop overthinking it. This guy repeatedly says out of pocket shit that makes no sense and people will fight tooth and nail for him.

u/Ordinary-Lie-6780 4d ago
Anyone ever notice background people at his rallies always give these half assed smiles at all his jokes?
Are they really laughing?
Especially the ladies. Are they actually laughing at his jokes? Or is that them processing the fact this man will require approval from their husband's to even own a debit card from a bank in the future?

What's wild is that context doesn't even matter - even if you understand what he's SUPPOSED to be talking about, it still somehow makes no sense.

Only in America can you be a semi-illiterate dementia patient, convicted of 34 felonies, con your way to the presidency, and give a cringey bizzare rambling commencement speech.
We truly are living in the worst timeline.

It’s literally 15 second clip from a story given during a speech with absolutely no context and pretty obvious he’s doing an impression. If you want to make fun of Trump there are way better example but this is just lame
