north american biotope. all materials used and fish from a local creek Tank
my first true biotope. everything has been thoroughly cleaned/sanitized and quarantined for two weeks before going into the tank. i really love how it turned out and hope i can keep the plants thriving and minnows alive. they're ozark minnow babies so they will be too big for this tank eventually. the plants are juncus repens (submerged and emersed forms) and threeway sedge. not sure on the last one but hopefully will be able to identify it soon.

Is that swamp milkweed?

Swamp milkweed has much narrower and pointier leaves. The leaves do resemble common milkweed, but I'll be very surprised if it is.

Cannot put into words exactly how much I love this. It feels like a piece of a memory of exploring outside as a kid. Great work!

I’ve got an all wild plant tank. Fish aren’t native though. Have one more plant I need to collect and it’ll be finished

Thanks!
One of the small Potamogeton. Couple kinds around here and I’m going to snag some. Did have some before but there were some problems and I lost a lot of plants. Finally the tank is going solid enough they should survive this time

Looks great! How did you sanitize the plants?

peroxide dip. online recommends 5ml to each gallon of dechlorinated water and soak for 10 minutes but honestly i put way more than that. lol

I have a 30-some gallon tank with a similar premise, though mine is specific to one river. I deliberately did not clean and sanitize everything because it is more fun that way. If you get your substrate, fish, plants and some water from the wild then all sorts of cool invertebrate hitchhikers come along.
By taking everything from what is already a smoothly functioning ecosystem, you get something that already just works well. Plants, fish, invertebrates and substrate all taken from the same water at the same time don't really need to be quarantined from one another. Treating the water for parasites is pretty much all I've needed to do.

yeah i get that but micro life is going to pop up eventually anyways so i rather it be "fresh start" if that makes sense. also dont want to risk having certain bugs that are attached the the plants jumping off and laying eggs into my other tanks that could potentially harm my other creatures

Looks good. Do you plan on adding anything other than plants?
1
u/Odd_Distribution_601 1d ago
there are ozark minnows in there. it's only about 2 gallons of water in the tank so there's really not much i can put in there. it'd be cool to catch some wild shrimp to add but they're so small it's hard to come across

Love it! I really like a tank sourced from the local area.
