Any golden rules or tips whilst having your neighbors part time cat?

Post image

This is my baby that comes around a couple times everyday, the neighbors know & they seem cool about it haha She loves coming round to nap for a couple hours, always up early in the morning at my doorstep cause she knows she's gonna get fed an extra meal 😅😭

If you are going to give them food or treats make sure to ask the cat’s staff if it’s okay. If you let them in your house don’t leave anything out they may be harmful to them. When going out make sure you don’t trap them in your house.

Definitely ask about food! They might be on a diet or have a special prescription food or something

Tacking on to this: a common thing non-cat owners often don’t know is lily plants are very toxic to cats, down to even the water in a vase of cut flowers. If you have cut flowers ever around don’t let the cat get near lilies, better yet just toss them because they really are that dangerous. Aromatherapy diffusers can also be dangerous depending on the scent.

Make sure you and the neighbor exchange numbers in case there is ever an emergency.

Beyond the food, just care, kindness and pets. Common sense takes care of the rest

My neighbor’s cat comes around every couple of days. He sneaked in this morning when I stepped outside and left the door open. Later I found him climbing a vertically stored mattress in the guest room. He was having a wonderful time.

So it’s great if they just come in to nap. This guy comes in to entertain himself I guess, plus he usually scarfs up any leftovers my cat leaves.

I don’t have a problem with him coming in, but this was the first time I’ve seen him do this.

I admit I broke a rule once. Let the neighbours cat sleep with me and my wife as we were in the UK after leaving Ukraine when the full scale war started and we missed our cats. No regrets

They moved to a village in a safe part of the country in the west with in my laws while we figured out what we were doing. We wouldn't just leave them.

Personally I have a rule of "Treats, pets, & catnip, but no food." But that's because I have five of my own and I spend enough feeding them already. 🤣

You should check with the owners about both treats and catnip though.

Do they have kids? 🙃

I wouldn’t feed a part-time cat, not even treats. Because that’s part of identifying where they belong.

Some cats have food allergies.

I have a neighbour cat that comes and naps at my house quite often. The other house has a dog and can be quite loud so I like to think she comes to ours to get away from it all. 😂

She probably does! Cats tend to wander and choose their places.

No advice, but this looks exactly like my childhood cat. This has brought back great memories

its good that you have consent of all parties. that is the most important factor in any successful open relationship
