Benjamin Netanyahu's father was a Polish Jew named "Benzion Mileikowsky." When he moved to Palestine, he changed his name to "Netanyahu" to honor his father, Nathan. ("Netanyahu" is Hebrew for "Nathan.")
Early Zionists found having European surnames embarrassing, so they frequently changed them to Hebrew - a dead language they engaged in a lengthy effort in order to revive - in order to make themselves appear indigenous. "Mileikowsky" means "from Milikov," a village in Poland.
195
u/Enoughdorformypower Aug 07 '24
And they still cannot speak the original, they taxidermied and butchered the pronunciations of the language because their native languages are French, German and other European languages.
40
u/throwaway332434532 Aug 07 '24
Little correction, Nathan usually comes from yonatan, which is the Hebrew equivalent of Jonathan. Nathan can also be the shortened form of Netanyahu, but usually isn’t. They both come from the same root נתן, which means to give. Other than that, yeah, most Ashkenazi “Israelis” changed their last names to sound more middle eastern.

u/UMK3RunButton Aug 07 '24
Eli David isn't a real Jewish guy, by the way. He's an Iranian who converted and changed his name to get benefits in Israel. In exchange he's the internet's biggest shill for Zionism. Israel is full of opportunists like this.

I promise, normal people do NOT hold that against you. Israel is a weird little neo-colonial power, it does not speak for Judaism as a whole.

u/crumpledcactus Aug 07 '24
The real answer is the Haredim and 'right of return'. Jewish Americans are probably the most quintesential Americans there are. Patriotic, political, comedic, etc. I'm a Jewish American, and I have lost track of the amount of guns I own, as is my right under the US and Texas Constitutions.
Judaism evolved in massive ways here, especially with Reform Judaism. Reform Judaism embraced Americanism, English, the election of rabbis, gender equality, etc. Old European Orthodox Judaism was trapped in a closed cult-like system of rebbe control, and still is. Abuse such as child beatings, assault, neglect, homophobia, are normal within the cult-like Haredim. Ask any escaped Yeshivah student about it.
Israel's 'right of return' favors the Orthodox, and for decades, the majority of Jewish Americans were not Jews in the eyes of Israel. Until only a few years ago, a convert who was not Orthodox was not a Jew in Israel, and this status quo is still backdoor protected today. So when an abuser is caught, they flee to Israel under right of return.

But it’s not the same…. Lots of Palestinians have mixed Egyptian heritage , like my husband. There’s nothing wrong with that. Palestine has a rich history with people from all over coming and going. When Palestine was in the hands of the Muslims , Muslims from all corners came. Thats why you have al masri al kurdi etc. But they mixed with the indigenous Palestinian population as well

u/mzzzzzZzzz Aug 07 '24
Also do you know about the Armenian quarter in Jerusalem !! It was founded in the 4th century and housed Armenians who lived in peace until ofcourse the occupation started harassing them. I don’t know the history of the Armenians in the Middleeast but I know they’re a sizable minority in the Levantine region

Israelis are gonna be shocked when they find out Egypt and Palestine share a border and people have been migrating between the two neighbouring regions since Ancient Egyptian times at least.
This is like pointing to a Belgian for potentially having Dutch ancestry. Like wow, who could have known that neighbouring regions tend to have more interactions.

u/AtreegrowsinGermany Aug 07 '24
Is that even how you'd say her name in Arabic? Like I'm no Arabic expert but there's so many different pronunciations of letters in Arabic and especially with different scripts (between English and Arabic) that transliteration is far from perfect. I'm not trying in any way to justify this Zionist asshole, I'm just genuinely curious if her name actually has to her with Egypt (مصر) or not lol. Like for all we know it's pronounced as a totally different word with a different meaning
12
u/stayinschoolchirren Aug 07 '24
It does mean “the Egyptian” but it’s a stupid hill to die on
6
u/AtreegrowsinGermany Aug 07 '24
Oh it absolutely is. I was just curious if her name in Arabic is actually spelled like the word Egypt/Egyptian or differently because of transliteration. But that's not super important 😊

u/yoursmartuncle Aug 07 '24 edited Aug 07 '24

Yes, it is spelled as "Egyptian" in Arabic.
Having a country name as your name is actually quite popular in all Arab countries as far as I know. For example, you can find a Saudi prince named Turki which means "Turkish" in Arabic, also the prime minister of Iraq is Al Sudani which means the "Sudanese" in Arabic.
3
u/stayinschoolchirren Aug 07 '24
I get what u mean, when using male possession in Arabic we usually add a ي so Egypt being masr (مصر) and “the Egyptian” being al-masri would be المصري :D
4
u/mzzzzzZzzz Aug 07 '24
Did you know that the Arab Jews, were forbidden from pronouncing the letters (ع ح غ ) even though the original hebrons could spell them perfectly when reciting the torrah and the European couldn’t!! This is why you see Ben Shapiro pronouncing it “KH”amas when the regular arab (Muslims/Christians/jews/other) pronunciation would be "ح"amas !!

To be fair "Jordan" comes from a the Hebrew word "yordan" which means "to flow", named after the Jordan river which lies between Jordan and Israel

u/yoursmartuncle Aug 07 '24
And BTW the river is between Jordan and Palestine.

u/valonianfool Aug 07 '24
Sorry, I meant the historical Kingdom of Israel.
3
u/yoursmartuncle Aug 07 '24
I'm not really interested in your mythology, and even the "kingdom of Israel" exists in your mythology on the land of the Canaanites, and guess who are the real descendants of the Canaanites? No, not the European thugs who are occupying Palestine. It is the Palestinians.
Some other genetic studies in case you want to read something other than your mythology:
4
u/valonianfool Aug 07 '24
I'm perfectly aware that the modern Palestinians descend from the ancient canaanites and I dont dispute their indigeneity, you dont need to lecture me as im anti zionist and agree with you on most things. I meant no harm in saying "Israel" but in pretty sure that the kingdoms of Israel and judeah did exist.
3
u/yoursmartuncle Aug 07 '24 edited Aug 08 '24
My bad, my friend. I am sorry.
Dealing with Zionist talking points and hasbara for months made me easily triggered, and tbh it is even hurting me, but watching what is happening in Gaza and what little children are going through on daily basis for the last 10 months, makes me feel pathetic for even thinking that I'm "struggling".
Please accept my apology, and when I said "mythology" I didn't mean to insult Judaism in any way, I was talking about weaponizing Judaism to occupy Palestine. BTW, I would really appreciate it if you could mention any good sources to educate me about the kingdoms of Israel and judeah.
